Cheney to Blitzer: Lay Off My Lesbian Daughter

Click to return to TMZ.comVice President Dick Cheney went off on CNN's "Situation Room" host Wolf Blitzer for asking him about ... his lesbian daughter Mary's pregnancy.

On Wednesday's episode, Blitzer congratulated the sneering Veep on the impending birth of his grandchild, while adding that some conservative groups are critical of Mary's pregnancy. Blitzer then read a statement by the anti-gay Christian organizaton, Focus on the Family. "Mary Cheney's pregnancy raises the question of what's best for children. Just because it's possible to conceive a child outside of the relationship of a married mother and father, doesn't mean it's best for the child."

A steaming Dick would not respond to the comment but did seethe, "I'm delighted -- I'm delighted I'm about to have a sixth grandchild, Wolf, and obviously think the world of both of my daughters and all of my grandchildren. And I think, frankly, you're out of line with that question."

Blitzer, who stated he was sympathetic to Mary and her partner Liz, tried defending himself by saying, "That was just a question that's come up and it's a responsible, fair question." But Cheney wasn't having it and fumed, "I just fundamentally disagree with your perspective." Wolf quickly switched topics to another controversial woman Cheney's not too happy with, Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

This isn't the first time Dick was inflamed by someone mentioning his lesbian daughter. In 2004, the Cheneys found it inappropriate when John Kerry mentioned Mary's homosexuality during a presidential debate.

91. He's the worst kind of hypocrite there is. His Administration (let's face we all know Bush is too dumb to be in charge of anything) promotes law against gays rights. While out the other side of his snake like mouth comes the inability to face the fact that his daughter is gay and should have the same rights as any other American.

I hope to God this country can hold on for two more years. TIC TOC!!!

92. I think most of you are misrepresenting Mr. Cheney's thoughts. I completely understand his logic. I have a gay sister who I live with and I love her and respect her. However, we obviously have extremely different political views. I have told her that I do not think that same sex marriages should be allowed. Just because VP Cheney says he is excited about having another grandchild does not mean that he supports his his daughter's lifestyle or that he is a hypocrite. I fully believe that as the father of a lesbian he does not support her lifestyle or gay marriage, but the key is he loves her as I love my sister.

93. Both extremes are wrong. All people who are able and loving should be able to have kids. Those who aren't - gays AND straights - should not. But the answer also isn't outlawing religion. Religion isn't about what crazy people intepret in the most literal sense to oppress people. Religion was never supposed to be literally translated word for word. It is just moral guidelines. If you look at the Ten Commandments, there is nothing about gays and abortion and whatever. Fanatics just use religion as an excuse to hate. The answer is to tolerate and accept and to be open and accept that the factor most important in raising a child is LOVE.

94. I applaud Cheney for his eloquent way of telling Blitzer he was out of line and showed true devotion and love to his children and grandchildren's right to privacy and protection, regardless of who their father/grandfather is. Blitzer came off as an idiot with no shame and willing to go after the children of public officials.

95. wow.....another reason im becoming ashamed of the people in this country is when i read stuff like this....80% of the comments left on here were like whew way out there. I dont even know why i was looking at this article but somehow i started reading the comments left by people and realized that such a divided country with all sorts of crazy people will be the downfall of this great nation eventually...so sad

97. I'm not a big fan of Cheney. I personally think he's as disreputable & corrupt as they come in Washington DC; the stereotypical political hack. If he got indicted & sent to prison for leaking the identity of that CIA operative, I wouldn't shed a tear. However, Wolf Blitzer should remember that he's supposed to be asking NEWSWORTHY questions, not audition for a job with Entertainment Tonight or Extra. Skewer this jerk on his extraordinarily poorly planned & executed Iraq policy or not giving a damn about the average American who's working hard just to keep up with where they were last year; leave the guys daughter out of it.

98. I understand the question that Wolf was trying to ask.....How can that duality exist, especially in a person holding the position that Cheney does. It is a legitimate question that has every right to be posed. However, I do believe that there were more appropriate ways to bring it up that didn' t have to involve his family, his daughter, and an innocent, unborn child. Any father would get defensive in that situation. I understand to some degree where they were both coming from. As a reporter, Wolf has the responsibility to get the answers to the questions that Americans are asking. And Cheney has the responsibility to answer, but he also has a responsibility first and foremost to his daughter. He dosent neccessariy have to alter his opinions and values to validate his daughters actions.

99. I abhor, loathe and detest Dick Cheney. I have nothing positive to say about him. But I think Wolf Blitzer was OUT OF LINE asking him that question. This is probably the only time I'll EVER agree with that lying, snarling, arrogant Cheney.

Does this post have a problem with intolerance of a different opinion ... or look to censor MY point of view (on my post #106 at 9:06pm)? I didn't say I supported either political party ... only the issue i discussed ... which was Blitzer was out of line. Don't make assumptions about me or take my post as meaning anything deeper than I stated ... One last thing, I wouldn't worry about giving me advice on what I kiss or not ... that is a bit personal.

101. lokk, folks, he soes not want to admit that private rules apply to his child. this is just the typical doublespeak that we can exspect from any elected individual. God forbid that we upset their campaigns or the status quo... we are expected to deal iwith the virgin lesbian birth in relative silence.....

102. I thought there were rules about adding comments to this site. "Inappropriate comments may be removed"---then why didn't you remove the idiot who signed his comment--and added his email---godhatesfags.com? I would call that incredible inappropriate--wouldn't you?

103. Just as during the debates, the Cheneys just can't help but react to anyone mentioning a fact - that their daughter is a lesbian because to them"lesbian" is a dirty word.

There is nothing more hypocritical then Cheney and his bitch-for-a-wife (God is she ornery!) when it comes to this subject.

104. I think it was out of line. His daughter has said that her father accepted that she was gay & told he just want her to be happy. My hats off to Cheney.
