Brandy Unfairly Targeted, Civil Rights Group Claims

BrandyBlack civil rights leaders in Los Angeles claim the California Highway Patrol has made singer/actress Brandy "a political trophy."

The Los Angeles City Attorney is deciding whether to file misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charges against Brandy, whose Land Rover slammed into a Toyota on the 405 Freeway killing the driver.

Today, Najee Ali, leader of Project Islamic HOPE, said the CHP's recommendation to file charges against the singer "is unfairly targeting her for prosecution because of her celebrity." Ali told TMZ he is organizing an e-mail campaign in the African American community to put pressure on City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo to reject the case.

Delgadillo says "We will treat this case like every other case and treat it very seriously because someone died."

256. I read most of these comments before deciding to post mine. I found that there is so much racism from the some of the comment writers about the race card. Wow! One comment mention the term "sistas" and "brothers One mentioned the term "ghetto bitches" and "law breakin brothers." How more racists can you be? The article about Brandy never mentioned anything about the race card. It stated that the authorities are targeting her because of her CELEBRITY status. It never mentioned anywhere that the authorities were targeting her because she is black. It goes on to state that the NAACP was going to start a drive with the black community to pressure the city attorney into dropping the case. How is starting a petition with the black community playing the race card?
***Now in relation to the case, I think Brandy should be treated as any other offender in the US. I does not matter if she is a celebrity, politician, CEO, or farmer;. Nor does it matter if she is asian, black, hispanic or white. Not even if she is rich or poor. If the proper procedure-after an accident like that-is to charge someone with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, she should definately be charged.

257. I think "Farrah" has too much time on her/his hands. It seem's that you post comments in every bit of gossip TMZ has to offer Farrah. Your a loser Farrah. If you have a problem with all of this then show up at her court date with signs and rant your sh*t because typing it on here get's you where exactly? I think your making your points to the wrong people and in the wrong place, and your comments are bullsh*t when it comes to this situation. Is Brandy supposed to get off scott free then because she's black?Ahhh, No! She killed another human being and should pay the price for it, despite her race. It doesn't matter who the hell you are ok or what race you are. So stop making this a race issue. You rant racial sh*t in places it doesn't even need to be said on TMZ. Its pathetic! So please stfu and get your word's put across to where it matter's most. Thanks. lol...My god! lol

258. They need to leave Brandy alone.Yes it will become racial knowing that she is a young black woman with money. People are killed everyday in car accidents and the insurance pays off. What make this case so special and different. Brandy if you get this remember that God is with you and He is not going to allow any thing to happen to you stay strong in the Lord and this to shall pass.

259. Celebrities get the idol treatment that us mere mortal types can only dream about. Race is not an issue here. Wealth is.

Sure, the race card is played and we get divided over it. Why? Is it still a sensitive subject for many of us? Yes it is. Could it be that her advisors want the public to raise voices in a racial injustice outcry to pressure the city attorney? Good strategy for her... Bad for us. Most of them would not even invite us over for dinner, yet they want our protest voices to play to their benefit. We do know that injustices still exist in our society. But lets call this one for what it is and not get divided over a bogus cry.

In the end, we are treated unfairly... We are being played and divided by the media and her handlers. Shame on them for taking a serious wound and pulling off the scab just to divide us.

It mitigates real cries of injustice when people choose to use the race card to avoid consequences normally faced. It is unfair that she would be treated special. Above the law even. It is unfair that she would have vocal support of a civil rights group, when most injustices go without public notice and debate.

In the end, we all are worse off!

261. I think folks are missing the point here--its more a question of whether she is being targeted because she is FAMOUS, not because she is black. As horrible as this was (and while she should DEFINITELY be held liable in civil court) she didn't do anything ILLEGAL here.

Having poor reflexes when driving is not illegal--she wasn't drunk or high, or even on her cell phone, so she wasn't doing anything illegal. It's a legitimate accident. Would you want to have to go to jail if you didnt hit the brakes fast enough and you ended up hurting/ killing someone? I think the police are possibly trying very hard to not make it look like she is being given a pass because she is famous that they might just be going too far in the other direction. Its a difficult situation to be in, but hopefully they end up getting it right.

What is MORE shocking is the fact that another actor (Lane Garrison), was DRUNK and driving--ALSO in Los Angeles--and ended up killing 1 teenager, and injuring 2 and the police are still trying to decide if they are going to press charges (see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16911482/). WTF is there to think about!?!? He was DRUNK and DRIVING--something which is ALREADY illegal--and ended up killing someone. Its a joke how we handle drunk drivers with a slap on the wrist (which, for all you folks who want to bring up race are DOMINANTLY white and male) and yet want to make an example of a legitimate accident, where the only thing Brandy is truly guilty of is being a poor driver, not knowingly endangering every person on the road.

262. I can't believe that the Civil Rights group is saying Brandy is being unfairly targeted. Seriously, are you kidding me? She deserves to go to prison, she was intoxicated and she KILLED someone.

263. The young lady was not paying attention while drive a car on a busy freeway, another paid for this mis attention with their life. Color had nothing to do with it as far as I can make out. Should she be given a free ride because of her color?

264. Brandy is being targeted just because she has a lot of money and the unfortunate other family is not so well off. If Brandy was just a regular average joe she wouldn't be getting sued for $50 million!
