Dancing for Beyonce Is No Dream, Girl

BeyonceTMZ has learned that dancers working on Beyonce's latest videos are being low-balled on their salaries in order to make the videos on the cheap.

Sources tell TMZ that the music diva is shooting several music videos in L.A. this week, which we're told she is financing, not her label. Sources also say Beyonce's choreographer, Frank Gatson, has refused to work with any of the dancers' agents on this job.

We're told that by eliminating the middleman and dealing directly with the dancers, Beyonce can pay them below standard wages. Industry contacts say this practice is highly irregular for an artist of Beyonce's stature, and it undermines the dance industry as a whole. TMZ has learned that in order to maintain good working relationships, the production company for the project , RSA Films, has recently agreed to pay agency fees for some of the dancers.

Usually, a dancer cast in an A-list artist's video can earn around $3000 for two rehearsal days and two shoot-days of work. Without agents fighting for their rights, the dancers on Beyonce's latest videos will earn less.

While some dancers have boycotted the high-profile gig, others, willing to go around their agents, have been flown to L.A. and put up at hotels to work for the lower rates -- just to say they danced for a megastar like Beyonce.

Since music videos are not covered under union rules, Beyonce's camp is not violating regulations, but they are not in sync with Dancers' Alliance, an organization created by dancers to standardize non-union work.

Calls to Beyonce's reps were not returned. Frank Gatson's rep had no comment.

49. WHY IS BEYONCE TRYING TO RUIN HER CAREER. I WAS A FAN OF HERS, BIG TIME, AND THEN I FIND OUT SHE HAS FUR IN HER LINE OF CLOTHING. THEN THIS. I DON'T KNOW BEYONCE. I HAVEN'T BOUGHT ANY OF HER LATEST MUSIC BECAUSE OF THE FUR THING. IT'S A SHAME REALLY, BECAUSE I THOUGHT SHE WAS SUCH A SWEET HEART. BUT THEN AGAIN, SHE'S YOUNG AND MAYBE SHE'LL LEARN FROM IT AND CHANGE.

50. No one is holding a gun to these so called "DANCERS" heads.

If they dont like B and what she pays than move on.

52. I agree with most of you who have responded to the actual issue and not tried to build an excuse using racism. This has nothing to do with racism, but everything to do with morality and ethics, hence why TMZ have printed this issue.

The dancers did not have a gun to their heads, but if you have bills to pay, i am sure you would be willing to take up the job, especially if its the only one you have had in a while. It is therefore not fair to say that Beyonce is right in her actions because of that. These dancers are probably also trying to prop up their CV's for future gigs by saying they have danced for Beyonce. Still doesnt make it right. Also, if Beyonce is making the videos out of her own money, and not willing to pay the FULL price for that, then i do not think it is a wise business decision to make the videos in the first place. If the record label is not willing to finance the video, then that's a clear signal that they do not have enough confidence in her album sales to do so, i.e, they don't think her album has generated enough sales to warrant the expenditure. Thats business!!

If Beyonce is as religious and morally upright as she says she is, then we would not be having this debate as this problem would never have come up in the first place. Those who side with her on this should also question their ethics. As a black person living in a society that needs to promote its own people, this is a shame. She should be the one advocating for the dancer's rights, not trying to be greedy or being a miser. Afterall, what's a few thousands to someone who's already worth millions. Think about that before you agree with her actions.... and try imagine if it were you, your sibling, your parent etc.

On another note, whats that about her being treated for Herpes?? Is it true? Is it also true that Jay z beats her? Such a sad world.....

54. Just because TMZ prints it, it must be true, right?

Even if it is, I have a question.

If Beyonce was working with the dancers' agents, how much of that $3000 would the agents be taking as their cut? With an agent, the person could be bringing in even less money than without one once the agent's cut is factored in. On top of that, a person will pay a smaller amount of taxes on this money so there is a likelihood that the person would end up better off in the longrun. Perhaps the ones who aren't boycotting are the ones who are intelligent enough to realize that they might be better off this way, not only with the exposure but financially when all is said and done.

Trust TMZ to not really look at anything analytically and blow things out of proportion just to smear peoples' names. Good going, guys!

55. The best way to show the selfish entertainers is not to buy their products and don't attend their concerts. All they do is use the people who have so much less than them. We make them and we can break them. Why are so many people idolizing them. After they get your money, they live and dine and shop at places you are not allowed to enter.
Don't support them with your hard earned money.

56. All of you guys are just hatin'. If they didn't want their pay to be that low, then they could've bounced a while ago. But they are still there. Leave Beyonce' alone, and get a life, her videos and her dancers have nothing to do with you, so stop with the critism! Don't call her a B*tch either, because you don't know her.
To the person that said this...
"Shes yesterday's news. She is on her way out. Everytime you see her shes eating. That fat A**ss is getting bigger and bigger. Shes starting to look like Miriah. Jay-z mug is getting ugly. We are gonna call him mugger from now on."
Shut up, gosh. Ppl have a problem when girls are annorexic..just shut up and leave her alone.

59. if anything, beyonce should be paying her dancers MORE than the going rate for the use of their likeness and their skills. unfortunately, music videos are not union... YET.

i think it's disgusting to ask dancers to work below the industry scale (which by the way has not even kept up with inflation since the 80s) from an artist that has PLENTY. if she really can't afford it, she shouldn't be hiring 50 dancers, she should hire 25 at the right rate. it may seem glamorous to be in a video, but when it's your livelihood, it needs to be lucrative as well. for comparison, if you were the best software writers in the country, why would you go work at Microsoft for a LOWER rate because of the prestige? you wouldn't.

i like beyonce, i've worked with her a few times on union jobs and she was wonderful. BUT, she needs to step up here and acknowledge that THIS IS NOT RIGHT. even if it is her production team that is making this call, she should step in. The way the audition was run was borderline extortion for the people who work for that choreographer regularly.... do this job on my terms or don't work with me again. not a fair practice, but somewhere dancers need to stand up for themselves too and just say NO.

THANK YOU TMZ for running this story!

60. p.s. the rate they quote in this article is about FIVE times what these dancers are going to be paid per video and YES this article is TRUE.

also, agents make sure that the compensation is fair to the usage (as best they can)..., with no agents involved, these kids are most likely not going to see a cent from what is obviously going to be dvd compilation sales, itunes vid sales and ALL future usage in perpetuity.
