"High School Musical" Sequel Negotiations Off-Key

TMZ has learned that negotiations to return three of the four top stars in the sequel to The Disney Channel's smash original TV movie, "High School Musical" have hit a major snag.

If you don't have kids, or aren't currently using Clearasil, you probably don't know that 2006's original Disney Channel movie "High School Musical" reached 100 million viewers worldwide. Or that its soundtrack -- RIAA certified as quadruple platinum - was the number one album for all of 2006. Or that 6.5 million DVDs of "High School Musical" have been sold. And you definitely aren't aware of the sold-out 42 city concert tour that featured most of the principal cast, or that some 2,000 high schools will be licensing the production to perform locally with their own students. In other words, these aren't deals Disney wants to see go asunder.

However, the three key members of the sequel's cast -- Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu and Vanessa Anne Hudgens -- are in a major tussle with the Disney Channel over compensation in the sequel: Insiders say that while the cast is expected to fly to Utah on Sunday to begin rehearsals, Tisdale, Bleu and Hudgens may well be staying put until their deals can be revised for the better. The kids, clearly, want a piece of the soundtrack and the HSM 'merch,' which is ubiquitious these days.

Disney is notoriously aggressive in negotiations in the best of times, so it'll be interesting to see how the Channel's execs will react to kids who won't be pushed around on the playground. Reps for Hudgens, Bleu and Tisdale all declined comment, and referred all questions to Disney Channel; a spokeswoman for Disney Channel casting, Patti McTeague, would only say that "we have signed deals" with the cast, and rehearsals were expected to start on February 19.

In the meanwhile, Disney on Thursday announced it is also prepping a separate, theatrical feature based on "High School Musical" scheduled for release in 2008 called, "Haunted High School Musical."

16. High School Musical is about the worst movie ever made. And I'm the type of person who loves watching horrible television shows and movies. This was just BAD. Ridiculous. But even though the actors are doing pretty much a craptastic job (and not even singing for themselves, in the case of at least Zac Efron), they're the ones making the money for Disney. So I suppose it's only fair to give them what they deserve. Can't be sure whether that's what they're already getting or more, because Idon't know exact figures. If anyone's willing to sit around all day and sing those god-awful songs from HSM all day, I'D certainly pay them a million dollars.

17. Puh-leeeeeese!!!!! People...get a grip. Hudgens, Bleu, and Tisdale aren't doing anything that other older, and higher profile actors, singers, and athletes haven't done already. Like someone already said...they're only wanting a bigger piece of the cut because their work on HSM was huge. Disney is making so much money from this film, along with any merchandise, a sold-out tour, and anything even remotely related to HSM, and those involved deserve a bigger piece of the pie.

If Disney doesn't want to pay them, then let the actors walk. Sure...Disney can make as many "High School Musical"-related movies and such with any actors/singers they want, but the buzz won't be the same. And in the end, this will only be another over-hyped movie/musical series that'll fade away along with any other teen fad that's come and gone.

18. okay high school musical is my ultimate favourite movie and they did a really good job so i cant wait for the sequel. Im surprised that ash, v, and corbin are putting everything on hold because it just doesnt seem like them so i bet it isnt their fault. If they have already signed the contract then they eventually will have to do the movie and i know they will because they are all so excited for it. Ashley wont stop talking about how excited she is for the sequel so in the end im sure it will all work out. I love disney and i think they know what they are doing high school musical: sing it all or nothing is still going to come out in august-- dont worry about it
p.s i might not know what im talking about because im only 13 and every1 else sounds so proffessional! lol
