Anna Nicole Smith: The 911 Tapes

TMZ has obtained tapes of the 911 calls made moments after Anna Nicole Smith was discovered unconscious in her Florida hotel room last Thursday.

On the tape, officers from the Seminole Police Department can be heard requesting assistance from Hollywood Fire and Rescue.

After Smith's bodyguard desperately tried to administer CPR, Smith was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

While no official cause of death has been determined, the medical examiner has not ruled out foul play.

63. As a 911 telecommunicator.. I am more concerned with the way in which the call was handled....

The telecommunicator asked no relevant questions.. didn't offer CPR instructions.. nothing.. just slack.

That's an embrassment for the entire emergency service community.

65. I am a 15 year EMS Dispatcher and Field Paramedic. I train new dispatchers and teach advanced classes for current dispatchers. Unless you are involved in emergency services in any way I do not see how you can comment on the demeanor of the Seminole County PD dispatcher. She was just relaying information. She was not at the scene of the incident. If I called another agency requesting a response and sounded like I was in a panic they would tell me to "calm down, talk slowly so we can understand the information you are trying to give us". Dispatchers all over are taught to have a monotone voice and remain calm in all situations. This is probably an experienced dispatcher as she did NOT panic. A new dispatcher likely would loose control of the call and panic as it was "ANS". Subconsciously if we change the tone of our voice or loose our professionalism we loose the confidence of the caller and or person we are calling to give information to. This is a proven science and is why we are all taught to be calm. After the incident is over we can put our emotions into it. Otherwise we are not able to do our job effectively if emotion gets the best of us. It took me many years when I was a new Paramedic / Dispatcher to gain enough experience to be comfortable enough with what was doing to be calm. This is a hallmark of a true professional. Confident, Calm, Collective, Shows no emotion. This type of person will get the job done no matter what the situation. Bullets flying or lunch time. If I lost it on every critical call, all my patients would die, in the field or in dispatch. Which of these dispatchers would you rather have take your call when your baby stops breathing? #1 = A 911 dispatcher that becomes overwhelmed with emotion and forgets crucial information that directs responding personnel where you are resulting in a response to the wrong township because she dispatched the responders to "Tracy" Street two towns away instead of "Tracey" street in your town. Baby dies. Yes spelling of location names and the suffix of “St” “Ave” “Terr” “Rd” “Cir” ETC.. make huge differences. #2 = An experienced 911 dispatcher that obtains all necessary information calmly including confirmation of address, township, Etc...and is responsible for a 3 minute response to your non breathing baby that is saved by the Paramedics. I think anyone would rather have the calm #2 dispatcher. I could go on forever on the complexity of proper dispatching / calltaking. You all need to leave the complicated stuff to the professionals. None of you criticizing the Seminole County PD have degrees or training in emergency services. None of you have the evidence they have secured. There is a process that needs to be followed so that the evidence gathered is good enough to make an arrest or convict someone. A Paramedic or a Police Officer steps in the wrong place at the scene of a potential crime and disturbs evidence, that will need to be accounted for. This and many other procedures can take a long time if done properly. We are all trained in “Crime Scene Preservation” mistakes do happen. I was just giving an example of one of the many things that can complicate an investigation that is already a daunting task. Sit back, relax and wait for the investigation to be complete. Then you will know what really happened. All your criticisms are hear say and this is all BULL. I am embarrassed for most of you posting here. Except for the people who have enough sense to back up the professionals and or “ANS”. Have a nice day.

66. Im not going to cast jugement on anyone but these two deaths look very suspicious and the same drug that her son overdosed on was found in her fridge i hope that howard K Stern did not have anything to do with Anna's or her sons death but if he does i leave him to his own consience.Anna was building a new house and she bought a new yacht to start a new life i see no grounds in that for a suicide.Rest in peace Anna and may the lord watch over your beautiful daughter you had to leave behind.

67. I just read #56.
You have got to be kidding me! you are the embarrassment! or as you spell it "embrassment".

This recording is NOT a recording of the 911 dispatcher taking the 911 call from the caller at the scene. So your criticism of not asking the right questions is insane. When I call another agency to have them respond there are no questions to ask of them. Especially offering CPR! Why would this dispatcher call requesting assistance from Hollywood Fire and Rescue to respond and give them instructions on how to do CPR? HA HA HA! Listen to the tape again. Remember that most places have more than one Dispatcher / Call-taker on duty at all times. When A 911 call comes in the Call-taker takes the call and remains on the line obtaining further information and or giving Medical instructions if trained to do so. A second Call-taker or The dispatcher calls other agencies to have them respond as needed. This is the conversation recorded. When this dispatcher asks someone else in the room what the problem is I bet that was the Call-taker on the phone with the 911 caller saying "she's unresponsive and not breathing". This is how the system works. The person taking the 911 call has to stay online with the caller to obtain further information, give medical instructions and confirm the arrival of the emergency crews. Someone else must call requesting assistance from Hollywood Fire and Rescue. You are a "911 telecommunicator" ? Where? K-Mart?

You are an "embrassment" for the entire emergency service community.

68. Anna Nicole Nobody was an uninteresting douchebag. The deader the better I say. Theres uh, like this war goin on and shes uh, like a D list celebrity. The media can't ask enough questions about her timely death-too bad they couldn't be bothered to ask the tough questions that needed to asked before the orgy of violence started in Iraq. So what makes this dead drug addict so special? Bury this nonstory with her useless corpse and concentrate on whos' F'n who fer chrissakes.

69. I haven't had the chance to read through all the comments yet...but I don't understand why the nurse didn't immediately call 911 from the hotel room. And I realize the person who placed the call was a trained professional and has to remain calm, but she seemed to talk very slowly...and didn't seem in a hurry at all to relay this information! And like Bray said, the person taking the 911 call didn't ask any questions. It makes me wonder if Anna could have been saved if things were handled differently. Such a tragic situation.

70. I want to know why the people who claimed to love her and be her family stood by and basically watched as she slowly killed her self? It is crazy to me she probable could have been put in a hospital and held just for her safety. Then get her into rehab. Unfortunately it is to late. My prayers are going out to everyone and Anna. I wish I knew her I would have done something to get her help.. The nurse that found her says in her interview "There was nothing we could do for her when she was found, You were supposed to do it before. Who ever turns out to be the baby's father (Not Howard) please take care of that little girl. She will never know her mothers touch, hand to hold, her kisses. Get involved with a church that is a great help. The baby deserves the best possible father, be a man whoever you are and make her your #1 priority not the money that maybe hers someday. Sincerely Michele

71. comment #51 you are a very sick individual to make such a cruel and heartless remark. She had a disease and someone should have helped. If someone in your family had cancer (brain tumer) that caused them to do and say crazy things would you say the same about them. Remember she had a disease!! You should be ashamed of your self!!! Michele

72. I not even sure why I am bothering to respond to this...
I took over 10 minutes to write two different replies..and some how they did not get posted... so here is the shortened version.

In response to #60

No Kmart here..

I am 911 Telecommunicator @ Columbia- Richland 911/311 Communications.
We are a CALEA Accredited PSAP ( In fact we just went up for re-accreditation in January)

With 8 police tacts.. 4 for county (regions 1-4) 4 for city (metro, north, south west)
EMS/EMS Hazmat Fire/Fire Backup and 4 Call taker positions...

I don't need you to explain to me how a 911 center works...

I live it... 10 hours a day/night.. 14 days a month...

I also think you need to listen to the call again...The recording is
not of the dispatcher requesting EMS to copy...It's of the Hotel
police.. calling into central... probably over the phone and not the
radio...

The 2nd comment made in the recording was "Hello."
When we receive calls from an officer... calling out over the radio.... we
get a callsign.. for example Richland 321 to Central/ the officer
has to wait to be acknowledged by the dispatcher.
You don't answer the radio by stating the name of your agency.
There is no " Hello this is
such and such" over the radio. No "Will you guys do such and such."
This is not radio traffic.. This was called into 911.
The officer was just rambling.. no structure no form.. which is ok for a 911 but not for radio traffic.. Can you really not tell that wasn't called out over the radio?

I don't have issue w/ the OFC that was relaying the information..
I have a problem with the call taker/dispatcher who took the call.( in our center call-takers primarily answer the phone... but with there only being four on duty at one time.. dispatchers have to balance radio traffic/admin lines/ and 911 ali/ani)

Before you attempt to jump all over me for a spelling mistake.. why don't you take the time to listen to the call.

Maybe w/ other centers unconscious female.. might pass for enough information... but not were I work. Even if we don't get the answers... we still have to ask certain questions.

OUR EMS wants to know appx age, medical hx. possible cause/ time lapse of the patient current status and if CPR has been offered (if it applies)
All though it is relayed to EMS in plain text.. our EMS dispatcher. wants to know if its a S08 (Unconscious Patient) or S83 (Cardiac Arrest) or S74 (Airway Obstruction) ( I do realise that calls for service are different from agency to agency.. but you know what I mean)

One of the major pet-peeves of most of most of our EMS dispatchers is seeing the cfs for unconscious.. becuase they know the EMT/Paramedic is going to push them for cause.

I can understand if the police ofc didn't know the answers.. but I can't understand the call taker not asking the questions.

When I have gotten a call from someone at the front desk/ or 2nd party from a hotel room.. if the person that calls me doesn't know the answers to my questions... I push the call out with what information I do know.. and keep digging to see if I can get in contact with someone on the scene...

73. who wants to cast the first stone, who is sinless? I can't say my life is perfect, but who cares, I'm a nobody? I think Anna tried to do well and she was a big-hearted woman. I really hope everything will come out, so the world will learn the truth about her last moments of life. Anyhow I think Stern has a skeleton in his closet.

74. Ok, I have read the comments now and I have a much better understanding of what was happening when this call was placed. I think the media shouldn't be labeling it as a 911 call, since someone previously explained it was actually a disbatch call. Thanks to those who explained it.

I think Howard should just do the paternity test and get it overwith. He is only harming that little girl if he is keeping her from her real father.

Still don't get why the nurse didn't call right away, but I don't know all the facts so I will leave it to the investigators.

Sleep with the angels Anna.

75. This is a "DEATH" of a human, the comments are unreal, this 911 tape was one police type from hard rock to a dispatcher, they are trained not to panic, thats there job.reguardless someone died here this is not a place or time for jokes. And the so called people who are suppossed to do jobs such as "judges" ect should be doing a DNA ASAP to find out who the childs father is so he can make arrangments for her life, such as a healthy safe enviorment for her to be raised in.This 5-month old baby has lost her brother and mother within months apart, how would you feel if this was you mother, daughter, sister, wife, friend, ect? stop acting like animals and have some compassion, "UNLESS OF COURSE YOU WALK ON WATER?" Shame on all of those who joke, one day the joke will be on you.Remember the saying, "walk a mile in my shoes".
