Dr. Kapoor: "Pregnant Anna Not on Drugs"

In an interview with PEOPLE magazine out this week, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor -- the doc described in the article as "Anna's personal physician" -- says that the former Playmate took "no dangerous prescription drugs during her pregnancy." Wha huh?!

As TMZ first reported yesterday: A prescription for methadone was written by Dr. Kapoor on August 25, 2006 for "Michelle Chase," a known alias of Anna Nicole Smith, who was eight months pregnant at the time! Maybe he forgot.

TMZ tried to reach Dr. Kapoor for a statement, but he quickly said "no comment" and hung up the phone.

16. Did you see the size of the bottle? Howard also is on something. CPS needs to take that baby and give her a loving home pallleeez somone help. They our 20 years too late for the son. ANS was a sick person and there are many people who wontributed to her sickness. All of those who suppossed to have loved here did her a great injustice. Did they ever hear of intervention? ET is making there relationship out to be a Fairy Tale. There paying him him for all these photos. There is a camera in his face everytimes he make a move. All from ET.And for those who said Methodone is okay when used correctly when pregnant need to have there heads examined. I will say nothing bad about ANS except for the fact that she was sick. And only that HKS loved her to (death). Lot's of investigating needs to be done and I'm sure will be. I hope they allow her to be buried with her son no matter who gets her body. That's where she belongs with her son.

17. Excuse me but NO drugs are completely safe during pregnancy, I believe that anyone who says otherwise has most likely had an addiction of some sort and have used the likes of methadone while pregnant, when are people going to grow up. Anna should have put her self in rehab, she only has herself to blame for what's happened I have absoluytely no sympathy for her,. the stupid woman should have cleaned up her act years ago, she was obviously a lost cause. I have never taken illegal drugs and don't plan on it and my kids couldn't be healthier. When are these stupid celebrities going to grow up and stop blaming others for their problems.

18. Let the woman be with her son already people. That is what she wanted. If what everything we here is true or somewhat true then obviously she was on Methadone so she wouldn't take heroin or something similiar while pregnant and from all the research done that is the most responsible approach in that situation, and what would have been best for both ANS and the baby. Everyone just stop judging and let the woman be buried now, a dna test done now, and stop with the negative. That little girl will have access to this people and she is the innoccent so lets all stop with the mud slinging shall we.

19. TMZ - your headline does not match your quote. The doc said she wasn't on any dangerous prescription drugs, not that she was 'not on drugs'.

Kelly - are you a qualified physician or pharmacist? Well I am a pharmacist and expert in addiction and drugs in pregnancy, and you are completely WRONG, and attitudes like yours are stigmatizing and lead to people not seeking help, which can cause death to both mother and fetus.

N- thanks for your post. I was one of the contributors to that booklet! :)
Methadone use in pregnancy has been studied extensively and is the standard of care for opiate addicted women during pregnancy. Abruptly stopping opiates is not dangerous for most people, but in pregnant women it can lead to uterine contractions and miscarriage. It would actually have been irresponsible to completely stop meds when she discoverd it was pregnant. Furthermore many women who abuse opiates and find they are pregnant use it as an opportunity to stop illicit use of drugs.

Yes, methadone is a very potent drug and needs to prescribed by an expert in addictions medicine. It does replace one dependence for another, but it is not addictive in the same sense as heroin. Methadone is an opiate, and people will go into withdrawal when it is stopped, but there is not the same euphoria as other opiates. Increased doses only lead to more side effects, not a high.

Kelly and other amateur critics - don't presume you know anything about complicated medical issues just because you read gossip sites. Consider also the effect what you post may have on vulnerable people who may be dissuaded from seeking help and proper prenatal care.

20. Thank you pharmacist for your explanation. It's encouraging that occasionally an educated person will post a rational comment when usually it's just people regurgitating gossip and even then they don't get it right.

It's probably not ideal to be using methadone when pregnant (or anything else), however this baby looks happy, healthy and loved.

While Anna's life was indeed a wreck just waiting to happen, disinformation and sensationalizing the story is wrong.

21. all this talk about anna being on drugs while pregnant...Any woman knows , who has had a child there are a series of blood work done through out the pregnancy as well as after the baby is born in the hospital on mother and child.... I am sure it would have come up in the testing process...Its not like she has the baby out in the wilds...with no medical care....as for the drugs she did when she was not pregnant...she is a grown woman and she knew what she did.....she had to see her self over and over again as we do on film when she was high...all these so called friends who came and went, when it got tuff...all are throwing blame on Howard..where were they, at the very least Howard was always there for her...And I think that is why she trusted him...he never abandoned her...and stayed when it was tough as well as good...No one knows what it is like to live with an addict ...especially if you love them....

22. With doctors like Kapoor, who needs drug dealers? He takes out the middle man.

23. Dannielynn needs to be drug tested! Poor thing...she was probably born addicted!

24. Does anyone have any photos that show a boyfriend relationship with ans and hks? I don't think he was her boyfriend. I believe he was obsessed with her and controlled and manipulated her...finally using his biggest leverage...her real or imagined fear of losing custody of the baby. I think hks used every button/insecurity to scare her into needing him...all the while trying to keep her vunerable and or addicted and therefore under his control. I think step by step hks tried to isolate her from anyone and everyone so she would have no where to turn but to him...I also think he had a back up plan because he knew she did not love him...he'd been living this obsession so long that he if couldn't have her no one could. I've seen this before..trust me. It is no coinsidence that her son died, the whole bahamian residency scheme, his name on the birth cert, and a pending paternity order..and then wham she dies too...I believe he knew his time was coming to an end and then executed plan B. The only one that makes any sense is ans friend "shelly"? Larry Birk...is the father...AND somehow ans and her son Daniel should be burried together in Texas or California. I can not believe that a mother or father could attempt to establish residency anywhere else while maternal or paternal or custody issues are before a court. This is typical of our failing system though...it's about time more people know about it.

26. In Methadone Maintenance, pregnant patients are kept on their regular methadone dose. This is because opioid withdrawl is more hazardous to the mother and fetus. Once the baby is born, doctors can administer decreasing doses of opioids, as tolerated by the newborn, to allievate any withdrawl symptoms. It is well known that pure agonist opioids cause no tissue damage, only chronic constipation. Doctors are aware of how to detoxify infants, using small doses of opioids to prevent withdrawls, as well as docusate sodium or docusate calcium to allievate constipation. This is proper medicine.

27. Did it ever occur to any of you that Anna's use of methadone during pregnancy may have been a valiant attempt to come clean from her recreational use of opiates and make a better life for herself and her baby? Use of medications during pregancy is not ideal, but methadone treatment is certainly a better alternative than detoxing from opiates while pregnant and risking the life of the baby. To do so would have been misguided and negligent both on the part of her doctor, her husband and herself. Your allegations are baseless and uneducated.

Pregnancy
If you think you might be pregnant, don’t worry that the methadone may have harmed the baby. There is no evidence to show that there is any additional risk to the development of the baby while you are on a stable dose of methadone.

For the sake of your health and that of the baby, it is important that you tell your GP you are pregnant as soon as you can.

A lot of women decide to come off opiates when they are pregnant. If you decide to detox while you are pregnant this can be done most safely during the last six months of the pregnancy - but your doctor needs to help you plan and monitor any reduction.

Stopping suddenly can be dangerous for you and the baby and should only be done under medical supervision.

Sometimes the stress and pressures of pregnancy make it hard to stop using and you could decide not to detox. If you are physically dependent on opiates, being stable on methadone is better for the baby and you than being unstable on illicit drugs, especially if you are injecting.

29. Regarding the drugs sent to ANS.....in case y'all forgot the law, IT IS ILLEGAL to supply a drug like methadone to someone using a fake name. The nurse from one of the doctors says that the name on the drugs was one of ANS alais's, and she never came in to get them, it was always Mr. Stern. So regardless how this plays out, DanniLynn needs to be put in protective until this is sorted out. Stern and ANS were NOT married. There is a will, and as stated by Stern's attorney, it was written way before Daniel died. As far as the 'WILL' ? The for attorney Virgie sumed it up.........If there is a will, why wasn't it recorded through the courts either in CA, Miami, or Bahama's? It will come down to DNA to prove who the father is. Although Stern's name is on the birth certificate, if someone challenges that, guess what the DNA will trump everything.

30. She obviously bought it for Howard. Maybe he'll submit to a drug test to prove Anna's sterling good judgment.
