Dr. Kapoor: Methadone OK for Pregnant Anna

A lawyer for the doctor who prescribed drugs to Anna Nicole Smith in the late stages of her pregnancy says giving methadone to Smith was "medically sound and appropriate."

The lawyer for Dr. Sandeep Kapoor responded to allegations of medical misconduct today in a statement to TMZ, saying, in part, "Medical research and protocols confirm that methadone is approved for use by pregnant patients." According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, methadone treatment for pregnant women can "save [a] baby's life" and can "allow [one] to regain...quality of life." The government also says that using methadone while pregnant "will not cause birth defects for [a] baby."

The lawyer also defended the doctor's use of an alias for Smith's methadone prescription, explaining, "The media frenzy surrounding Smith's life and tragic death underscores why public figures may choose to use pseudonyms in order to protect the privacy of their medical treatment."

Kapoor's attorney didn't discuss the specifics of his treatment of Anna Nicole, citing the confidentiality of medical records, saying only that the "treatment program for Anna Nicole Smith was at all times medically sound and appropriate."

According to the statement, Kapoor "will cooperate with any inquiries by the Medical Board of California," which said yesterday that it would investigate the doctor's prescribing Smith's drugs to an alias. Kapoor's lawyer also says he is "saddened" by Anna's death and offers his condolences to her family.

18. I was on methadone my whole pregnancy and my daughter is completely healthy today, it totally saved my life and hers. I would have kept using and she would have died from withdrawls.....so it is ok!

20. Her baby was born addicted that is why she went to the Bahamas to deliver. If she would have delivered here in the states it would have been tested and taken away from her.

21. First of all ANS was an irresponsible slut who knowingly slept around with many men at the same time without using birth control, obviously. Dr. Kapoor was prescribing in huge supply all at once. What the hell did she need to pour the shit on her cereal in the morning? Those who claim no impact to a baby are simply stating the limits of what we know at this time. At one time lead in paint was considered safe for children. We simply didn't yet know and that's where it's at you carcass worshipping trailer trash jerkoffs.

23. The package also had Demerol in it, another controlled narcotic. Now, she was in a country that had hospitals and doctors that could have supplied this if she had a reasonable pain indication. Why did she also need injectable Demerol?

24. THE BODY WASN'T EMBALMED TODAY BECAUSE THE EMBALMERS WOULDN'T SIGN AN AGREEMENT ORDERED BY THE JUDGE TO NOT SHARE WITH THE PUBLIC WHAT THE CONDITION OF HER BODY WAS.

THIS IS THE SAME JUDGE THAT SAID SHE CAN LAY THERE FOR A MONTH BECAUSE SHE WAS IN A COLD ROOM AND IT WAS HIS BODY NOW.

I THINK IT'S OBVIOUS THE JUDGE WAS WRONG AND THE BODY IS IN FACT DECAYED AND HE IS JUST TRYING TO SAVE FACE.

25. #4 yes i have two kids and i still wouldn't take methadone i don't care if the government says it's ok to take or not for pregnant women. jesus... pregnant women have been told that tuna could be bad because of mercury levels. so why would i wanna take methadone?

26. NATALIE - Oh my goodness! Please KNOW methadone is actually BETTER for you while you're pregnant than aspirin which is confirmed to cause fetal death.
I hope you either 1- don't have kids or 2- will remember this when you do

27. I see Larry Birkhead lurking behind Anna in lots of the photos and Howard K Stern was the one taking care of her......what gives ???? Howard was the only one who loved this woman unconditinal, just look at the guys now coming out of the wood works, and he still stands his ground. Anyone can be a daddy but it takes special care to be a father......Howard loves that child, no matter what, he is seeing to it that she is in good hands........I think her Mom and friends were all jealous of Anna. RIP Anna..........La. lady

30. I'm guessing that the doctor is a gay doctor. Wasn't he in the photo near the car that Anna Nicole was in during the Gay Pride Parade? I'm guessing he's a friend of Howard k. Stern and that Stern is gay and not the father. I'm guessing Larry is the father. Checkout his eyes, his nose and the baby's eyes and nose.
