Why Won't Puck and Public Health Reveal Famous Hosts?

Composite of Wolfgang Puck and the county seal of Los AngelesWhy is everybody concerned about not revealing the hosts of the parties catered by Wolfgang Puck's catering company, which exposed hundreds of guests to the Hepatitis A virus? Wolfgang Puck's people wouldn't tell us, and the head of Public Health for Los Angeles County won't tell us, despite multiple chances to do so.

And so we're wondering: What is it about these hosts that makes Puck's company and the L. A. County Department of Public Health think that it's better to keep the hosts' identities secret than to get the word out as quickly and widely as possible, using the media to help prevent the spread of the virus?

An official from Public Health told TMZ earlier in the week that some of the hosts were "very high profile people." To that we say, so what?

Dr. Jonathan Fielding, MD, MPH, the Director of Public Health for LA County, tells TMZ, "I don't believe that broad notification is the best way to reach people. It is much better for the people who hosted these parties to contact their guests directly." But why, we ask?

Fielding says that yesterday, after TMZ put pressure on County officials, the Department gave hosts of these parties a letter, warning them of their exposure. He said that his staff would work with the hosts "today and Monday" to confirm that their guests would be notified, but could not guarantee that all would get the notice.

And again, when pressed, neither Dr. Fielding nor Puck's people could provide a specific legal rationale for not revealing the names of the hosts of these parties. Dr. Fielding cited "privacy concerns" and the fact that some of the parties were held in private homes.

16. Isnt it ironic when outbreaks happen the news and health dept are so quick to make it public which restaurants and/or parties where the infect happened, yet when it comes to the elite hollywood types they are protected. Such double standards and i hope all those "beautiful people" are getting theirs. Also as a native Californian I know that Puck has illegals working for him, they are in all restauants out here. I hope he is sued and loses it all.

19. The reason I bring up the race thing is this , anytime you get someone screaming racisist they use it to shut up the white's , and I for one am tired of it , because remember this , unless you are a native american you trespassing on my land , your people have done genocide on my people , whites and spanish as well . So should I care about that , I can't , I live in the now , but i remember the past , for you see my grandfather was alive during the last of the indian wars , or should I say exterminations , you decide , I cant very well leave this country nor can any of us , however I will demand people , if we choose to disagree use intelect and get off of the pagoritive's , it cheapens the argument , using rasist is just sooo cheap and a lazymans way of silencing people . I know raceisum and this isn't that , it is the truith . Have a nice day

20. I suppose the "right" answer really depends upon if the unposted events the Hep-A infected person worked were private parties with few enough people that the Health Dept can be SURE they are able to contact each and every person.

On the other hand, if the events did not have a finite guest list and people came and went loosely, then it should be published, just as restaurants having workers that come down with highly contagious diseases are. It isn't just the guests, either, but all the people working the event - cooking, bar tending, waiting tables, busing tables, EVERYONE that is at risk and most events put on by high profile (aka WEALTHY) people have a lot of support staff. They have the same rights to know as any VIP.

Let's hope that, in absence of a published list of events, everyone attending these events, be it as guest or laborer, find out about their possible infection, or there could be a lot more people getting and spreading Hep A to the rest of us.

21. Oh, it's really quite simple. They don't want to release the names of the celebrities who were exposed because it would be horrible publicity for the celebrities. All the celebrity sites like this would be running stories about how they are all infected and should be avoided at all costs... Which is why they won't say who was there... Which means they are also saying that the public's opinion of these celebrities is more valuable then the health of any reguar folk like us... Of course TMZ doesn't care about our health, they just want to have a story making the celebrities look bad as they always do.

23. How would it be proper for them to share it? What if it was a possible these people had been exposed to the AIDS virus... do you think they would appreciate some nosy site like TMZ broadcasting that all these high profile people might have AIDS? How is it any of anyone's business whether Steven Spielberg or whomever might have Hep A? It is personal and private information that is, and will always be, none of TMZ's business. Quit trying to stir up controversey. I guarantee the Health Department knows more about handling these situations than a celebrity gossip rag.

24. Thank you Kim from post #7...I'm so glad someone mentioned that...this was driving me absolutely crazy. Let me clarify...I love this site and will continue to come here...but it bothers me that journalists are not familiar with the HIPPAA laws. I have actually taken classes regarding this issue, and you are absolutely right. So...here is the answer...why aren't they publishing a list...for 2 reasons...first, because they don't have ACCESS to a guest list from every single party...but mostly because there are FEDERAL laws in place that PROHIBIT this information from being made public. If people don't like it...seriously...you need to contact your congressman and push them to make a change...because that is the only way that it is going to happen. (And once we elect a new President next year who will most likely be a Democrat, you might as well save yourself the postage...because Hillary Clintons staff are the ones who wrote it and presented it to Congress more than 5 years ago.)

This is what frustrates me about this particular article...TMZ....you DO know why. In your very own article that you published at the beginning of the week, you explain that when you contacted the health department, they told you that it was:

A: Illegal
B: Redundant..being that the LAST party that was effected was the sports illustrated party, and the immunization shot had a 14 day effectiveness span...and THAT day was the 14th day, so any other parties wouldn't benefit from the shot anyway.

So you do know...making this article misleading. Don't get me wrong...you are out there trying to get the information out to people...so I think this comes from good intentions...but people need to just chill out...(I'm pretty sure) Wolfgang Puck isn't out there trying to kill us all. (Unless you are a cardiologist and have seen or tried his recipe for bacon-wrapped meatloaf!)

25. Guess what? THEY DON"T HAVE TO!!! It's none of our business!
Why do you think you deserve to know???
Geesh! This brings nosy to a whole new level!

26. C'mon. It's just HepA. Not like it's HepC or anything. The person who was diagnosed with it could have passed it on if s/he handled cold foods or drinks, but that isn't to say that s/he DID pass it on. A disinfectant on surfaces or mere cooking of the food will kill it. Puck and the Health Dept have informed the hosts, who will inform their guests. Some may get the preventative shot, others will have to wait a few weeks to see if they develop symptoms. If they do, no doubt they'll have access to the best health care that (Puck's) money can provide. End of story. TMZ just wants the names for gossip reasons. Or maybe you're jealous because you weren't invited to any of the parties? I mean, it isn't like you want the event/guest lists in order to further public health efforts or epidemiology research.

27. Here is the truth about what happened that evening. A CHEF - not an illegal alien (you racist bastards) or any other person, had eaten at an asian restaurant the night before. He felt ill after working for only 2 hours. He went straight to the doctor and it was determined that he had Hep A. Upon hearing the news he contacted WP Catering and informed them. They threw out EVERY piece of food for the slated party to be safe and started from scratch. There was never a chance of someone contracting Hep A from the food. Now there will be nay-sayers and conspiracy theorists, but the truth is that everyone that attended the "high-profile" party never came into contact with Hep A from the food. The reason the hosts have not been revealed is because if you scroll up you can see from the ignorant comments that information is best served for those directly involved and not some stay at home rube in Idaho. Must be a really slow news week.

28. who know an article about a health scare can bring out so many other underlying issues that's happening in America. Let's see we blamed the illegal aliens, an American Indian that can't spell, now we're dragging a Chinese restaurant that the chef went to the night before and got sick the next day into it as well. After all, this is a gossip site, so why should one expect more than speculate what the ACTUAL situation was.

By the way, just because one is not white, it doesn’t mean they can’t be a racist. Unfortunately, we are all just human and there’s a little bit of racism in all of us, minorities included.

30. " He said that his staff would work with the hosts "today and Monday" to confirm that their guests would be notified, but could not guarantee that all would get the notice."

What is their problem with not making this information public, esp. if they can not quarantee they can not make sure all the guests are notified? Are they afraid they might get sued by those attending over privacy issues? I can understand keeping medical info. private, however, in a case like this, every person who could've been infected needs to know. And if they aren't going to do that directly, then they need to do so publically so at least those guests have a chance to find out and be tested. And if not, then I wonder how they will feel if anyone was infected and found out later on....then decided to sue them?
