FOX In -- So Edwards Out of Democratic Debate

3/8/2007 5:00 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has decided to pull out of a Democratic primary debate in August, in part because it is being co-hosted by the FOX News Channel. A statement from the Edwards camp also cited "scheduling conflicts" as a reason for Edwards' decision -- which is the political version of "not interested."
John Edwards
David Rhodes, FOX News Channel VP of News, issued a statement calling it "unfortunate that Sen. Edwards has decided to abandon an opportunity to reach the largest mainstream cable news audience in America." Maybe if Fox News didn't regularly use the services of one Ann Coulter, who last week called Edwards a fa**ot, he wouldn't have a problem with them!

The Democratic Party of Nevada's choice of FOX News as a co-host came under heavy scrutiny from such political websites as MoveOn.org Civic Action; the site has an online petition, which they say has over 260,000 signatures asking Dems of Nevada to drop FOX from the debate. It says, in part: "Fox is a mouthpiece for the Republican Party, not a legitimate news channel ... and should be dropped." Eli Pariser, Executive Director of MoveOn.org Civic Action said, "We applaud John Edwards for sending a clear message to voters, the media, and other candidates: Fox is part of the right-wing smear machine and should not be treated like a legitimate news outlet."

Documentarian Robert Greenwald, whose website FoxAttacks.com made a short film about FOX News Channel just for the campaign, tells TMZ, "John Edwards has shown guts, leadership and brains in being the first candidate to say no to the partisan propaganda arm, sometimes called Fox. He is saluted for his vision all over the country by patriots interested in real news."

Edwards hasn't always been anti-FOX News. According to Anne Schroeder at Politico.com, Edwards was on FOX News Channel's "Hannity and Colmes" as recently as January 23, one of the 33 times Edwards has appeared on the network since August 2000.

TMZ contacted reps for both Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama to see if they planned to follow suit. Calls were not immediately returned.

Attorney's Perspective

Didn't Former Senator Edwards learn from his running mate John Kerry that if you don't appear on Fox News you don't get elected president? Not every person that watches Fox is a Republican, Independents and swing voters are the ones who elect the president, not the far-left or the far-right. It is nice with the likes of organizations like MoveOn.org that Fox News IS Fair & Balanced. I have a right to watch what ever news channel I want to. This IS America, the last time I looked. And even if those contend that Fox News is a Republican mouthpiece??? Well then NBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, The New York Times, The LA Times, and even my local newspaper have been and always will be a mouthpiece for the Democrats. Its nice, that in America, finally some of us have a choice in which way we want our News to be served.

Former Senator Edwards will be making just another mistake in a long line of mistakes he has made in his political career. Speaking to his own party exclusively is NOT going to get him elected president. Even if he were to get every dems vote, he still needs the independents and swing voters, and even some republicans to put him in The White House. If he wants to be president, he needs to FACE his critics and not run and hide like Senator Kerry did. Good Luck Mr. Edwards, don't expect to be addressed as Mr. President any time soon.

Wow he must not be too serious about becoming president. FOX can lean to the right, but no more so than CNN leans to the left. They still have a huge audience. It seems as like if he wanted to speak to the most amount of people he would not back out of this debate. Or maybe he sees the writing on the wall and knows Clinton or Obama will win so whats the point? ; )

It's good to see John Edwards taking a stand against all the virtuolic windbags on FOX. The last few days after the Libby trial has been a virtual whine-a-ton for them. Underlying all their gassy, neocon, right-wing, extremist rhetoric is pure ignorance. The American public generally is not very smart and that is FOX news prime audience. But the good news is a lot of Americans are not crass name callers or flame throwers.

John Edwards, I have newfound respect for you and I know many, many other Americans applaud your thinking on this one.

IF FOX is a "mouthpiece for the Republican Party" Then all the other outlets have a Leftist Democrat slanted agenda. Fox IS THE ONLY FAIR AND BALANCED news source. All the scumbag Demotards cant handle differing points of view, so they often refer to people who do not hold their Marxist ideology as "Nazi's" or "extremists." You "tolerant" assholes need to be taught a lesson!

He shouldn't sit with FOx. This is the same "news" organization that continues to stand by Anne Coulter, who called him a gay slur - even though he is not gay (not that he would deserve such hateful treatment even if he was).

FOX is not a legitimate news service.

Kudos to Edwards for not being intimidated by all the infantile threats, name-calling and kindergarten/playground tactics that Fox is so famous for. (Oh , sorry Fox lovers - did I use a big mean word? Kudos = "praise, credit, or glory for an achievement")

Lol

I seem to remember during the debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards a few years ago his harping on the fact that Mary Cheney is a lesbian. He mentioned it over and over again. It was inappropriate for him to do that. If anyone is guilty of being homophobic I would say John Edwards is. Ann Coulter was making a joke, a bad one at that, but a joke. John Edwards personal attack on the sexual orientation of Dick Cheneys daughter was calculated and mean spirited. All the main stream media outlets are is a soap box for the Democatic Party to stand on. I am glad Fox news is on the air. Until they came along all we heard was liberal propaganda!

#27 i seen that debate and their was clearly no attack on Cheneys daughtter other than what he made of it in cahoots with FOX. He said nothing unappropriate at all, but Cheney chose to twist it always. And oh yeah, p.s. i say this as a proud parent of a gay child

There's one Democrat who is not afraid to take on the likes of Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and the rest of them at Fox News and that's General Wesley Clark. While he is not at this time a declared candidate, he has been battling with them for almost two years and has no problem shooting them down especially when they're trying to educate him about military history. Like it or not, Fox News has the top five highest rated cable news shows and this is the only opportunity its viewers might have to see what a REAL Democrat looks and sounds like and most of all stands for. Maybe, just maybe, a few of them can be converted and see the light!!! Edwards is being Bush-like who always appears in front of crowds that are pre-screened and favorable toward his policies. General Clark would tell them, as Bush has famously said in the past, "bring them on."
