Comedian Richard Jeni Dead at 45

Richard Jeni, a beloved standup comedian who was a regular on the "Tonight Show," died of a gunshot wound Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 45.

Police said yesterday, as reported by the AP, that the comic was found alive but injured after they responded to a call from Jeni's girlfriend that he had shot himself. Jeni died later in an L.A. hospital. An LAPD spokesperson said that an investigation into the death was continuing.

Besides his numerous appearances on the "Tonight Show" and on cable comedy specials including "A Big Steaming Pile of Me," Jeni acted in "The Mask" and "National Lampoon's Dad's Day Off."

46. My thoughts & prayers go out to his family. He was so talented and absolutely hilarious. What a talent and what a waste. I will also keep his girlfriend in my prayers, as that must have been so traumatic a site for her to witness.

God bless...

47. I grew up in Bensonhurst with Richard. We attended kindergarten straight through Hunter College together. We were born in 1957.

Spoke to him through the years. Just last year my oldest son and his friend went to one of Richard's performances. Richard met my son and was a gentleman.

I'll always fondly remember him. Quite a prankster as a child, yet quiet and always pensive.

Rest in peace my friend.

48. According to LAPD, the caller told police: "My boyfriend shot himself in the face!"
Hmm... Suicide? By shooding himself in the face?? Sounds hinky to me. Anybody know who his girlfriend is?

51. I am absolutely heartbroken! My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. The entire world has lost a treasure. From the first time I saw him until the last HBO special, he never failed to make me laugh until I cried. God Bless You Richard...you will be missed more than you could've ever imagined.

53. Must have been a pretty bad shot if he only "gravely wounded" himself at first!

Still, funny chap to be sure. His last HBO Special (Steaming Pile of Me) was excellent. Especially his riff on the combined effects of red wine and PMS. RIP and all that.

56. Horrible news......bless him....

that only way this will make sense to me, is if he DID have some awful illness. That would MAYBE make sense....otherwise, no.

59. Totally caught me by surprise. SAD, SAD, SAD! The last blog entry he made was March 7, 3 days before he died. The irony is just too much. What a cute, warm smile he had. Look at the picture of him on this site, just above the COMMENTS section--a smile that would melt the paint off a manhattan taxi cab! And he ends up shooting his face off.
Is '07 the YEAR OF TRAGIC DEATHS, or WHAT?! God bless him.
