Oprah: My School is Safe, Not Strict

Oprah WinfreyOprah Winfrey is denying allegations that her new school in South Africa, Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls, is too strict with its students.

A statement from The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation says, "Our goal is to protect the health, welfare and well-being of the students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. As with other boarding schools, we provide a structured, safe and nurturing environment in which the girls can learn and develop."

News24 in South Africa reported yesterday that cell phones and email are not allowed during the week, parental visits need to be approved by the school at least two weeks in advance, and the maximum number of visitors per pupil is four.

Parents are not allowed to bring junk food items for their children, News24 said, but the Foundation told us that food items are discouraged but not prohibited. The Foundation went on to say that the students are allowed to have treats and that family members are encouraged to bring books, journals or educational materials to their girls when they visit.

News24 also reported that a satellite meeting between Oprah and the parents was abruptly canceled last week. The Foundation says no teleconference or in-person meeting with the parents and guardians was scheduled for last week.

31. Wow! I am totally shocked by some of these comments. I thought I lived in the year 2007. I thank God that I was brought up by parents who were friends to all people. I felt hit right in the heart. I have taught my children better and they are teaching there children better. Oprah is a giving and wonderful lady. Unfortunately there are too many people who are jealous of what she has achieved. It's not the race, sex, or religion. It's all in the money.

32. OMG, I wonder if, when the parents are finally allowed to visit, if they have any privacy? Are these visits being monitored so Oprah, the control freak that she is IMO, can know what the girls are telling their parents about what is really going on in her COMPOUND?
CLICK on the New 24 article highlighted in blue in the above artice next to the picture of Oprah. Be sure to read it if you haven't. The parents will now be allowed to visit ONLY ONCE A MONTH! Sounds like retaliation for the girls complaining. These girls are most likely being BRAINWASHED!!

33. Great approach! The American needs to be more disciplined and structured. As an educator, I have personally witnessed the decaying of our school system over the past several years. The American school system has stop putting EDUCATION first.

34. Sounds like Oprah's "chosen" children are no different then the "ipod wanting" Americans she looked down her nose at.

38. Connie,
best you get your facts straight before you make dumb comments like the one above, the "white" south africans are not jelous and have said nothing, it is the school pupils and parents that are complaining about the school.

39. it must be a bitch to have all that money...and not know what the fuck to do with it.the school she built in africa will be bombed into rubble and kindling wood. why didn't she just fly all those girls the fuck out of monkeyland to america so they could get discriminated against...like all the black girls here in this country.. education for black kids is a red herring anyway. even if they say their prayers at night and avoid the wolfmans bite...they will just be black phd s in a white racist world.amadou diallo didn't get shot because he didn't have a phd. sean bells lack of education had nothing to do with his 56 shot presentation. the lapd didn't beat rodney king two blips short of clinical death because he didn't get good grades...and new yorks finest didn't break a mophandle off in abner louima s behind because he didn't have a mba. they were all terrorized or murdered because...you guessed it...they were shiny black.maybe oprah should have just bought those girls a boatload of nadinola bleaching cream. if a college degree does not come with a fully armed...around the clock squad of blackwater mercs to keep the local cops off your ass...iespecially in the usa...its not worth the paper its printed on.

40. Am I the only person who doesn't act like Oprah is the second coming? I know she has made billions for herself and likes to help others, but that school cost a drop in the bucket compared to how much money she has. Plus, where is a school like that in America? The country that made her rich? How about Camden NJ or Detroit or New Orleans? She could afford to re-build New Orleans by herself. I would also like to break the myth that she is a rags to riches story. She may have come from a broken home, but it was a middle-class home. I admit I got sucked in to her show in the 80s and 90s, but I haven't watched her in years because she never shuts up and lets her guests talk! Plus I am tired of the constant parade of celebrities and their latest book about themselves. What happened to the old Oprah that used to be a journalist not a wannabee Barbara Walters that just asks softball questions?

41. im a south african so i know first hand! oprah is right in being strict, these girls come from nothing and if one parent brings treats the other girls will steal it. yes, steal it! at schools in south african townships the pupils can't even leave their desks to go to the bathroom without their pencil getting stolen. at oprahs school they are treated as equals and no one has any privledges which is how it should remain. we have such potential here and oprah seems to be the only one who notices. although a little racist and sexiest (oprah doesn't seem to realise the country has talents boys and white children), the school is still a blessing and hopefully one day the girls at oprah's school will become wonderful south african women.

43. Oprah, I'm white and I think you are great ... you've done more than I have in my life and I've done a lot and you've been a fabuous role model for so many men and women. Ignore the churlish comments from jealous people and know why this world is in the state that we need you in our midst for your goodness. You are indeed a great lady, and a great person. God bless you for all you do !!!

44. The same rules should be implemented in schools here. No cells, IMng or any of that crap and maybe some of these urban bums would learn something. The rules of her school are the same rules of any good private school. It is Oprah's school ...she can do whatever she wants. The girls can leave if they want to. There were thousands of girls that wanted into the place. Its a place to learn, not socialize and entertain 100 of their closest family members.

45. This is the school that cost $40 million and has it's own yoga room and beauty salon. Apparently there were 3,500 applicants but only 142 were accepted. The scary thing about this situation is that it could produce elitist prima donnas among so many poor. Creating the haves and have nots. All of those 3,500 children should be educated, not just a select few. None should have been turned away. What I don't get is why billionaires like Oprah aren't trying to eradicate the poverty in the US. Super rich should be funding housing, roads and free hospitals, there is extreme poverty in the US too. And why only now is a school being built? Projects like this should have been done decades ago and not just in the third world.
