Oprah: My School is Safe, Not Strict

Oprah WinfreyOprah Winfrey is denying allegations that her new school in South Africa, Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls, is too strict with its students.

A statement from The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation says, "Our goal is to protect the health, welfare and well-being of the students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. As with other boarding schools, we provide a structured, safe and nurturing environment in which the girls can learn and develop."

News24 in South Africa reported yesterday that cell phones and email are not allowed during the week, parental visits need to be approved by the school at least two weeks in advance, and the maximum number of visitors per pupil is four.

Parents are not allowed to bring junk food items for their children, News24 said, but the Foundation told us that food items are discouraged but not prohibited. The Foundation went on to say that the students are allowed to have treats and that family members are encouraged to bring books, journals or educational materials to their girls when they visit.

News24 also reported that a satellite meeting between Oprah and the parents was abruptly canceled last week. The Foundation says no teleconference or in-person meeting with the parents and guardians was scheduled for last week.

123. What the school needs is a Playstation 3 in every room, a full video arcade and a Starbucks. The place will be more fun then. We know Oprah can afford it too! I hope she's reading this!

124.
Oprah I have been watching you since you were on the TV Program with Jerry here in Baltimore. I am so proud of what you are doing with these girls. I believe that more girls here in the states should have more rules to live by . Good for you about the phones, etc.
Stick by the rules and you will get good marks from the girls and really make them good people..

126. I commend O for opening this school. Only rule I do not agree with is that the girls are not permitted to see their parents. Two week notice? I am sorry, but I personally feel that children need their parents in their lives and not with 2 week notice.

Otherwise, I feel that this sort of order and strictness that permitts the students to focus soley on their academia is wonderful. I am sure that schools in the United States would never adhere to such policies...for if we did (not including barring parents), that our children would have much better educations and there would be much less of a fuss about the low literacy rate, undeducated people on welfare and not pursuing college educations.

127. When did rules become a bad thing? If we had more consistent rules and restrictions in schools and homes today our kids might be a lot less self-absorbed and have a lot more respect for adults, teachers, and people in general. Life is full of rules. best to get used to it now.
