Sanjaya: Bottoming Out?

Sanjaya MalakarA source tells TMZ that 17-year-old "American Idol" contestant Sanjaya Malakar's cheery smile is simply a front ... and privately, the winsome teen is actually bumming.

A source close to Sanjaya's family revealed exclusively to TMZ that the darling hula-dancer has been devastated by recent bad press he's received over his not-so-precious singing. "He's so young and so sensitive, it's hard for him to go out on that stage and not have that devastation affect his performance," said the source.

Apparently, it's not just hard on Sanjy, but on his family as well; they are trying their best to just be a strong support system for the adorable teenager as he hulas his way through this sometimes surreal experience as one of the remaining 11 American Idols. It's unlikely that Sanjaya will have to endure it much longer. He was in the bottom two last week.

46. Sanjaya is wondeful as far as we are concerned. He has a good voice and good delivery. Yes he is handsome, but being attractive has always been part of being an idol in America or any other country -- and anyone who denies that is lying through their teeth. In addition to singing beautifully, and being handsome, Sanjaya is sweet, kind, caring and gentle -- those are good things -- and I'm sorry that alot of people don't seem to agree -- however, difference without rancor is one of the hallmarks of democracy. As far as we are concerned however, we will keep voting for Sanjaya.

As for adult commentators, as old as we are, who get off on attacking a 17 year old because he is decent, rather than a monster -- rather than strictly on their own musical tastes [which is of course legitimate, let us remember that there are differences in taste, which is why there are so many types of music in this country], I pity them for their lack of vision.

PS This is the only time we have ever been involved in American Idol -- we are involved because of Sanjaya, and before you ask, no we are both Caucasian.

51. i'm not a fan nor a hater of sanjaya. obviously he is lacking the vocals needed for the competition, but he's not the worst out of the remaining 11. his voice isn't bad, it's pleasant. it's soothing. he's more suited for a studio recording than a live performance. he's got huge potential though, being only 17, i'm sure his time will come. it's just not...now. i hope he doesn't get discouraged from all the bad press because for someone with such great potential i see a bright future for sanjaya. and the same people saying "this is a singing competition" only sound hypocritical and embarrassing when they also comment that he may be gay and on his ethnicity. who cares people. sanjaya you are adorable and i have no doubt that you are loving and kind as well. you have what it takes to go far and please don't get discouraged if it's not via American Idol. and remember...for every hater there's at least 5 fans backing you - just look at all the votes coming your way man. peace.

52. I don't watch the show but it's all over the news(don't know why, how about real news for a change) I aggree with No.9, he shouldn't have been in the final 24 in the first place.
I disagree No.31, I wish Michael Jackson did take the inivtation to appear on "AI" so he can tell Sanjaya to stop biting my looks & style. Then Moonwalk on his ass.
And No.26, if Sanjaya does become this year "American Idol" then they'll be expose as the fraud this show is then the show will be off the air in 2009 , Simon will go back to England and maybe real talented singers & musicians will dominate the airwaves & MTV again. I hate American Idol.

59. According to Ricky the spoiler, Sanjaya actually finished 6th in the voting last week.
This show in manipulative and abusive. Every week they make this poor kid take the walk of shame when he probably has never been in the bottom two or three. No contestant, especially a 17 year old kid should have to endure the crap they put him through every week.
And in his defense, I think he is a pretty good singer, and certainly no worse than the pathetic group of men they gave us this year. Go SANJAYA! Lot's of us out here are
supporting you and hate the cruel manipulation of this show.

If he cannot take the heat he should apologize with the audience and just leave.
Among the girl thare is a 17 y.o. that looks, behave, sing and think like a mature woman.
