Debra Opri has just issued the following statement regarding the legal fees she charged Larry Birkhead:
"One can only imagine from whom and for what purposes these stories were started. I cannot comment on unauthenticated documents which were disseminated to the media under suspicious circumstances, and which are covered by the attorney-client privilege. I can assure you, however, that all of the fees and expenses incurred on behalf of Mr. Birkhead were reasonable, necessary, and appropriate, given the complexity and magnitude of this very high profile case that was litigated in two different states and a foreign country. Out of respect for Mr. Birkhead, I cannot comment further at this time."

That's lawyer talk for you. She got caught. She should have known, being this is such a high profile case, that she would get caught.

Legal fees are not covered by attorney-client privilege. . . only materials "prepared in anticipation of trial" are considered part of the work product privilege. Liar.
She's a thief, too. Attorneys are not allowed to charge for everything but the kitchen sink. The American Bar Association has very specific rules, and there is a plethora of legal precedence on this matter. However, client beware---when you challenge an attorney's legal fees, an exception to attorney-client privilege kicks in and attorneys are allowed to violate privilege in order to show that the legal fees are reasonable.
Even if, arguably, $400+ an hour is reasonable, it is not reasonable to believe that a client should foot the bill for extravagant dinners or pay for a mininum of 10 hours each time the attorney has to board a plane. Not so, and not reasonble. The test is one of "reasonableness."
This makes me angry, because it's attorneys like her that give other lawyers a bad name. Greedy, unethical b*tch.
You I was wondering why she would want this publicized anyways, it's only hurting her chances at more business. She is essentially outing herself as a money grubber and the fact that she wildy overcharges her clients. This woman obviously doesn't want to work again.
Yeah right she claims she is quote ethical but presents this bill ??? And If she did say anything bad about Larry after He fired her.... she is most certatinly unethical herself.. esp since his case is not decided even yet.. what did she do?? Did she get him his baby ...NOT!
DEBRA OPRI insults our intelligence with that statement. She should have simply stated that could not comment, based on attorney-client privilege.
But she can never keep her BIG MOUTH shut. She felt compelled to try to justify the charges. AS IF there could EVER be a justification for the $50 tip at Outback, the $2,467.75 at Graycliff restaurant, etc.
We weren't born yesterday and neither was Larry.
I do not think Larry would have released this information so Deb better track down the person in her accounting office that did. Obviously, the person is sympathetic to Larry, so he/she is my new hero..
