Woman Shot in Face at CNN Headquarters

UPDATE: One of the shooting victims was pronounced dead on arrival at Grady Hospital, another is in extremely critical condition.

The CNN Center in Atlanta, Ga. was evacuated moments ago after a male gunman allegedly shot a woman in the face in a street-level lobby area, at approximately 1:30 PM EDT.

According to CNN, a witness saw the suspect dragging a woman by the hair minutes before the shooting.

A CNN producer says he witnessed the man shoot the woman twice in the atrium of the building, near the arena where the NCAA final game was played last night.

The suspect was then shot by a Turner Security officer and is currently being held at gunpoint by CNN Security and Atlanta Police. He is being treated by paramedics at the scene.

Police are saying this was a domestic altercation which led to gunshots. The woman and suspect are believed to be in critical condition, per CNN.

The shooting occured near the Omni Hotel, attached to the CNN Center.

46. Home invasion rate is home invasion, and I don't buy your statistics.

However, the murder by firearm rate in the U.S. is 27 times that of the U.K., and here are the
crime stats to back that up.

48. this is all thanks to the democrat mayor of atlanta, shirley franklin who is negligent and resistant to solving and attacking the crime rate in atlanta.

50. Domestic violence is one that has no boundries. No economic or racial. We the people should demand a more sensitive response from the courts in filing a restraining order. Most woman/men don't file because they think it is a piece of paper. To me it is a piece of paper but also a paper trail. So sad to know that someone feels so threatend that he/she has to take someones life. To the family my prayers are with you.

53. Thanks for tip on new crime resource, Nationmaster.com, at least for me. I usually used local and state police reports for crime stats and the typical Uniform Crime Report from FBI each year. I think the bureau's per capita stats reports skewed true stats which I always found more compelling. Those stats were useful for comparing crime rates between communities and assuaging frayed nerves. I think most people want the hard, cold facts. At least I did. We need a national database that compiles assault /homicides by firearm numbers daily or weekly. In this day and age, it can easily be done.

As for successful defense by gun-toting victims, I'm sure it happens but it's extraordinarily rare by comparison. I'm trying to recall any such report crossing my desk in nearly 15 years of crime reporting. Admittedly, maybe police did not share those success stories because the violent crime was avoided. Can't recall nary a one. Detente, i.e., the arms race may have worked for curbing nuclear proliferation, but not assaults by firearms by saturating our streets with more guns. Not buying that one. Last place I covered crime was New Orleans. They should have nipped crime post-Katrina by enforcing gun control by any means necessary. Yes, I mean searches of returning residents and the lot of thugs. Now it's a criminal haven with the scores of abandoned structures. Many New Orleans residents pre-Katrina lived behind barred windows.

I chose not to live in the city because of my abject fear of becoming a victim of violent crime. Call it quaint, but I want to be able to walk my dog any time of night without fear of armed thugs.

We're holding much of America hostage by perpetuating these ridiculous firearm policies. It's a national disgrace.Yes, changing culture and improving education are the true means to slow gun violence. But do you want to wait another 25 to 50 years before the tide ebbs? Not me.
