Gay Fairy Tale Weddings OK at Disneyland

Disney Fairy Tale Weddings and HoneymoonsStunning news from the Happiest Place on Earth today: Disney brass has decided that all people, both gay and straight, are now welcome to purchase the "Fairy Tale Wedding" package at Disneyland and on Disney cruise ships.

Per the AP, "The company said it made the change after being contacted by a gay couple who wanted to use the wedding service, which offers ceremonies at Disneyland in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disney's cruise ships."

(Memo to Bob Iger: Synergy opportunity! Ordain Isaiah Washington as a Universal Life Minister, and let the healing begin!)

To tell the truth, we're disappointed, but not for the reasons you might think.

Yes, of course, we're dispiritedly bracing for the inevitable hateful and disgusting harangues from the lunatic fringe of talk radio, wherefrom disparaging and offensive punchlines will emanate.

And we're not looking forward to it, but have come accept the inexorable truth that for Bill Donohue or some other religious fulminators, Disney's decision is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to decry another rending of the fabric of American moral this or that.

Yes, we're even prepared for the South Park-ing of this uniquely fraught cultural war moment.

But really, what disappoints us most is that shows like "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and "The L Word" had fraudulently lead us to believe that gay people are inherently more fashionable and stylish than heterosexuals. The fact that an actual gay couple actually wanted to use Disneyland as the location of their nuptials contravenes such a noble postulate.

There is one bright spot: At last, we truly are all equal -- if only in our tackiness.

17. whoever wrote this article is a horrible writer. i can see that they frequented thesaurus.com quite often and after all that trying to find big, fancy words it ended up sounding awful and overdone. good job!

oh and CJ, pj45, Kris, and Sheila.. get a life. there's absolutely nothing wrong with a gay couple. it's just like a biracial couple. think about it that way. i don't see anyone knocking that arrangement.

19. By the tone of some of these messages, it seems Micky Mouse is a more successful teacher of love and understanding than modern Christianity is. I mean wow, it's a just a commitment cermony, not a porno.

And to those "disgusted" who won't go anywhere gays go, maybe you better stay in your room. Look around. If there are more than 10 people nearby, statistically one of them is gay. Even in your church, your schools, and in your very own home, at your very own dinner table.

Have a nice day.

20. I could say I am dissapointed because Disney is a "family" company.

My big dissapointment comes from how easily Disney jumps on the PC train. I just hate actions that are done to appease people. How long till there is an openly gay person on Disney shows? Or a character with gay parents?

The thing is, these kids of things are not being done to make a political or moral statement. They are being done to appease the PC crowd.

They are not doing it to be fair. They are not doing it to encourage equality. They are doing it, because if they don't, some greedy person is gonna sue their butts.

The thing is, if they got sued, they'd win, because there would be no legal basis for a lawsuit. They just want to avoid all the bad publicity and lawyering, and it is just easier this way.

I just wish people would man up, and stop feeding to some people's sense of entitlement. To the gay community: Disney cannot deny you a hotel room. Disney cannot deny you entrance to their parks. Disney buses and monorails cannot make you sit in the back of the bus. THAT would be discrimination. Only offering wedding ceremonies to legally marryable couples is NOT discrimination.

21. i think this is a great think that disney is doing, allowing people to be who they are and be with whomever they want. and all you people that want to bitch about men/women living an alternative lifestyle then you need to be talking about interracial couples, because in the bible they are both wrong, so you cant just want to choose one side of the fence and not the other

22. All this week Bill O'Reilly (Fox News) has been challenging Disney -
the parent company of ABC.
He wants something done about Rosie O'Donnell.
The reason: Rosie has been saying “insane” things about 9/11 and
the Iranian hostage takers.

Are Gay Weddings at Disneyland the reply from Disney?

23. Oh and let's also remember that marriage (including the ceremony, the whole "do you take...", the ring, the music, the party afterwards, the marriage license, etc.) are inventions of MAN, not GOD. So it's inappropriate to claim God said that gays can't get a marriage license.

24. I really don't understand how there is still so much bigotry. I really hope that, just like we have all (for the most part) accepted the difference in the color of skin, we will be able to accept the difference in sexual orientation. If you hate that lifestyle, close your eyes. Besides if you go to Disneyland, you should be having to much fun to even notice whose wedding is going on. There is nothing immoral about loving someone of the same sex. NOTHING.

25. This part had me laughing out loud:

"But really, what disappoints us most is that shows like "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and "The L Word" had fraudulently lead us to believe that gay people are inherently more fashionable and stylish than heterosexuals. The fact that an actual gay couple actually wanted to use Disneyland as the location of their nuptials contravenes such a noble postulate."

What a hoot! Maybe this time the bigots will really go through with a boycott and Disney can be a hokey-but-refreshing Homophobia-Free-Zone.

26. Please tell freaks like "Sheila" that gays are not "hershey kissers" -- and that if this is her concept of "gay people" then maybe she should get her head out of her own ass and step outside.

And to CJ who said "the moral decline in our country continues" -- that's right. And it all began with Paris Hilton, followed by Anna Nicole Smith -- who, for reasons beyond my comprehension, seems to be the most important thing in the world while people are dying in Iraq. So, some gay people want to get married at Disneyland? Who cares? You stupid fools. Who the hell do you think invented all those wonderful costumes and songs and stories?

There is so much hatred and prejudice in the US that it is a wonder that every person hasn't turned on each other and killed each other. "Hershey kissers" my ass. It might come as a surprise, Sheila, but there are plenty of "straight" people who take it up the ass, so why don't you just stand on the street and drop your panties and get some... how dare you!

27. Perhaps all of those out there that feel gays are the scum of the earth should remember Mark Bingham... Named Person of the year by The Advocate for his heroism... A passage from that article:

"..The fourth airplane, believed to have been targeting either the White House or the United States Capitol, was deflected when a group of passengers fought back against the hijackers. It crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, killing all people on board. One of the passengers who fought back was Mark Bingham... A proud gay man."

Now... Mark was good enough to help deflect this flight... But wouldn't have been allowed to enjoy the magic of Disney? Think again people...

28. Disney shows some real moral responsibility with this change. I do not understand why people would be upset. They made their policy more welcoming. They did not ban straight people, so straight people are completely unaffected.

29. This is about fairness and respect for people. I can't believe the hatred and bigotry in these anti-gay statements. This is a diverse country. Calm down, look at the world around you. Many caring, talented, hard-working people are in same-sex relationships. Is it really that scarey to you that Disney is going to let them celebrate their committment to each other?

30. I do hope that it wasn't just about money that led to opening this up opportunity to be equal in this great land that touts to be the land of the free. We have young men and women--many who are probably gay but not allowed to admit...over in Iraq fighting and dying for us to be able to say mean spirited things and keep whole groups of people from enjoying things that the "perfect" people are allowed. well, even if it took money to make the first step, at least it was taken.

why do people want to make it about us and them-- it is all about us. We are all humans...it just seems some are more humane than others.

I applaud Disneyland, and would visit just to annoy everyone who is upset about these weddings.
