Wrong-Way Driver Charged in Deaths of Director and Son

TMZ has learned that the L.A. District Attorney has just charged the drunk driver in the Pacific Coast Highway wreck that killed director Bob Clark and his son Ariel.
Bob Clark
Hector Velazquez Nava, 24, was charged with two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated; one for each of the victims, and he's being held in a Los Angeles County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. If convicted, Nava faces up to twelve years in prison.

The "Christmas Story" director, 67, and his 22-year-old son were killed in a horrific crash on PCH in the early morning hours on Wednesday, when their Infiniti was struck by Nava's GMC Yukon.

UPDATE: Nava has just pleaded "not guilty" to the charges. His bail was increased to $200,000. He remains in custody.

31. Sooo sad that this happened. What a waste of a wonderful talent and obviously a man in love with his family. We have lost a major sensitive communicator who saw this story as right out of the Middle Class America, which we all know is being destroyed now. He interpreted the story for us on the screen in a heart-sincere way. Films like that, reach into us where truth and compassion exist, and they endure in spite of those who are the destroyers. My family and I have adopted "A Christmas Story" as part of our Christmas celebration, along with "It's a Wonderful Life." It would be wonderful to be able to rely on those wonderful movies being presented in theaters during our Christmas season. It would be nice to be able to go to a theater and see them on the big screen as a Christmas season routine. Guess those who are working hard to destroy the Middle Class and twist the U S A to their own "images" don't want that to happen. The stories are Too HUMAN and Too Middle Class. "They" don't want to promote that group. I'm grateful we had this filmmaker, a product of the Middle Class, in our country and gave us such a gift. And... the author created it right from his heart, too. See you later Bob Clark and all those whose hearts touched ours with this film.

What a burden it would be for Hector if he could understand what he did to the Clarks, and to our country... and to himself if he has any real love for himself. May those in our society who give anyone the tools to kill themselves and/or others be granted wisdom. KNOWING the evil you have participated in to inflict pain or death on others is a justice no court can give to a soul.

32. I find it interesting that this guy was charged the day after the incident and it took forever to decide what to do about the guy from Prison Break and I still don't know if anything has happened with the Brandy case. I guess if you are the celebrity committing the act it takes a little longer for justice to come thru...

33. If Nava is convicted he faces at most 12 yrs in prison...which means he could be out in around 6 yrs for good behavior. That's pathetic for killing 2 people.

34. Bob Clark was a great man.

Few know this, but he gave lots of money to charity, specifically to the LA-area hungry and homeless.

How tragically ironic that he and his son were killed by someone he would've helped.

In Bob's and his son's honor, let's do our best to help those in our community. Maybe it's time we start by joining MADD or a similar group who can make a difference.

And prosecute to the fullest extent of the law the man who killed them. Because unless the killer is brought to justice in a very public way, others with no business behind the wheel of a car will probably not think twice.

36. What is really sad is all the hypocricy of a typical american - everybody is mad at illegals when they do something wrong, but everybody is happy to pay $2.00 for a happy meal. Nobody wants to pay 400$ to get their lawn mowed by a "legal" american. We had an aur pair from Germany and she was really suprised to see us using a landscaping company to mow our 1/4 acres lawn - she said only few people in Germany can afford it. Everybody
wants our toilets smell well and be clean but nobody wants to pay for it. We, americans, deserve what we get and this is the price of the comfortable life we enjoy. Another proof that there is no free lunch.

37. It's a shame that there are more racists here talking their racism against the person driving under the influence and causing the fatal crash then just the fact that the person was drunk who did it. That's racist America for you.

38. How absolutely horrible. This guy who caused the death of these people needs to be locked up for a long time. driving under the influence should never be tolerated. i dont give a damn who a person is, how much money they have. lock the drunks ass up , give them rehabilitaition. In the case of a drunk driver killing someone, just lock their ass up.

39. I am so damn sick of hearing the sentences drunk drivers face when they have killed someone driving drunk. Where is there justice for the victims.? What the hell is 12 years? That is only 6 years for each life that he took out. What these stupid judges are saying is the deceased persons life was not worth anything. We all know the laws in driving drunk but yet people do it and then when they kill someone our retarded judges don't give them but a few years. I think if you are caught the first time driving drunk it is an automatic 25 years. If you kill someone driving drunk it is life with no parole. Too many times the drunk driver has already been arrested for DUI and all he got was a slap on the wrist. The laws have to be changed and now. Too many innocent people die on our roads because of drunk drivers.

40. Terrible tradegy. This is what happens when lawbreakers are slapped on the wrist and not punished because of lax immigration policies.

41. This is incredible! Another drunk driver on the road, one that does'nt belong here! Like I said in my other post we have enough of our own to deal with. Wow come to the states ilegally, drive, by booze, get drunk, kill someone. Talk about the land of oppurtunity! Give me a break!

42. There should be NO bail and he should get LIFE with NO possibility of parole. He killed two very nice people.

43. 12 years for killing two people ~ Wow that's just pathetic. Not much of a deterent since that's the max and will be wittled down from there.

I just don't understand drunk driving. I wish they would make cars only work after the driver passes a breathalizer. ;) They are starting to ban cell phones. Perhaps they could "lower" the legal amount of alcohol that one could consume and drive ~perhaps that would deter people from getting behind the wheel after drinking....period.

It's simple ~ if you drink, have someone else drive or get a cab. If someone has the money for the drink ~they have the money for a cab. Let's stop killing people

The daughter of a wonderful father killed in a horrific car accident.

44. How does someone with any integrity, honor or self respect "disrespect" the lives of the two people he killed and their family by pleading "NOT GUILTY".

It's insane.........he was drunk and on the wrong side of the road. Why can't people just say the proper words like "It was my fault" and I'm so very sorry" and accept their punishment.

45. Dear 13 (Jen) -

Brandy hasn't been charged yet because they are deliberating "because" she is a celebrity.

Brandy was not paying attention and CAUSED the accident that killed that poor woman and mother.

Brandy admitted fault at the scene and has been paying the hospital and funeral bills of the victim.

Yes.......Brandy seems like a very nice person, "but" she messed up and cost another person their life and destroyed a family. She shouldn't be able to buy her way out of it because she's a nice person and good singer ~ period!

There are laws and they shouldn't differ due to someone being famous, rich or nice.

Brandy should have done the proper thing and accepted the proper punishment ~ some jail time! A human being is dead and Brandy caused the accident. Those are the facts that just can't be ignored.

I will pray for Brandy, her family and the victim's family, but right is right.
