Imus: I'm No Mel Gibson

Don Imus isn't ready to be the next Michael Richards.
<
The radio host was on "Today" this morning where Matt Lauer -- who Imus mistakenly called "Mark" -- grilled him about the similarities between calling the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" and the racial tirades of Mel Gibson and Michael Richards.

"There's a world of difference between what Mel Gibson did, Michael Richards and the guy from "Grey's Anatomy" [Isaiah Washington]," said Imus, "we have to understand that I have a record of a relationship with the African American community whether Reverend Sharpton likes it or not."

He also said he runs a "comedy show," making the comments OK in his mind, and wants to get a black co-host for the show to "add some perspective."

The Rutgers women's basketball team is currently holding a press conference where the school's president called Imus' words "despicable" and "offensive," adding "racism and sexism have no place in our society ... they [the team] did nothing to invite the words Don Imus used."

16. Imus keeps saying "this is a comedy show". I don't listen to his show, and only became aware of his comments when I heard them reported on the news. I went to the dictionary to look up the word "comedy". The following is what I found:

comedy........a noun
comic entertainment......entertainment that is amusing
comic elememt......the humorous aspect of a situation

Then I went to a theasaurus, to look the word up. The following is what I found:

comedy.......a noun
Synonym.........funniness, joking, amusement, entertainment, humor, wit,
jesting, downing, slapstick, farce, pleasantry
Antonym..........tradgey

That's jjust what this was a TRADGEY, there was no humor, nothing funny or entertaining about what this person said. It was very sad, very ugly and most distasteful, and for ANYONE to accept this type of behavor is beyond me and most people that I know.

Fire his ASS!!!!!!!!!!

17. You people are completely missing the point...and someone made the dumbest comment about why there wasnt an outrage when Isiah Washington said what he said...Did you see the news? He was everywhere...and he DID go to Al Sharpton and apologize... and when black comics or whatever do make jokes about white people they are just that..JOKES..but when you have these white men go on tirades they are being offensive...get it right...In this case with Imus, if it was a basketball team full of white women, he would have never said that...so in a way he was being racist and offensive towards women.

18. I think the attention this has received is rediculous. Why is Mr. Sharptin more concerned about Don Imus than the nasty and negative language used in RAP. It seems that only the white race has or is slowly loosing our freedom of speech. There are more important things to be concerned with than the stupid comments of a morning TALK show!!

19. It's not about black or white, it's about respect for others. Make a joke about the basketball game, the loopsided victory, how Rutgers was outplayed on the court. That's a joke, not attacking the team's personal appearances. They are first and foremost people. They accomplished much just by being in the championship game and all that is going to be remembered is the negativity caused by callousness and indifference and the need for a "joke". It's sad. But what's sadder still is the reaction of those who see nothing wrong because it was a joke. "He said he was sorry, why isn't that enough" remarks show just as much indifference. It goes back to lessons learned in childhood - people resort to name calling when they have nothing else intelligent to contribute. As for apologizing, that fine and well, but again back to childhood - Sorry doesn't always make it right. Run me over with a truck, tell me you're sorry, but I'm still bloody, battered, bruised, and it sure still hurt !!

All I'm saying is forget the black and white issues, why reward the good hard work of group of young college students by attacking their personal appearances.

21. Don Imus should be fired. Period.. Probably more people in this country know who Don Imus is than know who Trent Lott is and what he said was nothing compare to what Imus said on the air. The country crucified Trent Lott and brought him down. "Shock Jocks" should be held accountable for what they say, after all, if you say it, you're thinking it. It was not funny and no one should be laughing. Fire his ass and don't let him back on the air.

22. Although I find Mr. Imus' comments abhorrent, as an American he is supposed to be able to express his right to free speech. Just like rappers, just like the Klu Kluxx Kan, and just like Rosie O'Donnell and Al Sharpton, et. al, Imus has the right to say what he wants. And his listeners have the right to change the radio station, as well as advertisers have the right to pull the plug on him. I say, allow him to exercise his right to free speech and suffer the consequences of his words. It is after all still a free country, right?

23. Mr Imus comments are representative of a segment of American society thats still intrenched after 300 years of the worst oppression (recorded) against a people during mankind. The brutality of this oppression is a result of the plight of most African Americans. This so called segment subject blacks to the same stereotype that was so-called discarded during the civil-rights movement.
This is a wake -up call Blacks need reparations Now. Impossible to fine justice in America it must be taken to the world court. The only reason I say this JUCTICE CAN NEVER COME FROM THOSE THAT PROFIT FROM INJUSTICE.

26. Imus, thank God you're not Mel Gibson or Michael Richards. At least they have a feeble excuse for what they said. MG was drunk and MR became agitated by hecklers. What's your excuse? But, he should not be fired. At any given time, when I try watching black comedy; I find it offensive when whites are insulted and when this happens, I just change the chanel. The same goes the Rosie O'Donnell Show.(oops I mean, the View.) Who could be more offensive than Rosie. In God's eyes we are all equal. Also, we are all Americans and if we don't stand "united" divided we will "fall." This is what's happening today. I

27. I love Mel Gibson and Imus. I feel that Imus overdid his thing with the like of Sharpton and Jackson. Do you remember when Sharpton and Jackson had the 3 white rich kids from Duke guilty without any evidence except for the fact that she was black. No one should listen to those two freeloaders who are rich on the poor. Imus you are so much better than those creeps. God Bless Imus and Mel Gibson for there input to this crazy time in life. I am sure Imus did not mean his statement to be personel to those girls.

28. Imus made a huge mistake by not going into rehab immediately. Isn't that what you do during time of scrutiny?
