"Idol" Ratings Hit a Season J-Low

Early numbers are in for last night's "American Idol." The sad fact -- Sanjaya may be up, but the numbers are down.
American Idol
Fifty-two million eyeballs (or, making the assumption most people have two eyes, 26 million people) tuned in last night to watch J.Lo coach the contestants, according to Marc Berman from The Programming Insider. That's almost a million less than last week, four million less than the same week last season, and 11 million less than the January premiere. Ouch!

But let's get real: "Idol" still rocks. The two weekly shows are consistently #1 and #2 in the ratings, drawing nearly five million more viewers than third place "CSI." So the sky isn't exactly falling, but the juggernaut seems to be getting a little long in the tooth.

61. This year is a joke. People who are talented are getting booted because of this sorry voting system. American Idol needs to do what other shows do, put a limit on the number of votes one number can make. I could hardly wait for it to come on each week last year. Now i don't even think of it. Until Sanjaya is gone I won't be involved in this JOKE............When did America start listening to Howard Stern?????? Because I missed that memo.....THANK GOODNESS!

66. Yes, the bogus votes for Sanjaya have RUINED this show for this season. But the one question that begs to be asked is, "How in the h*ll did this idiot make it to Hollywood in the first place?" What the F were the moronic judges thinking when they allowed him to advance past Hollywood week? The judges created this Frankenstein-akar and now it is ruining this show. And if the rumors have any truth to them, I wouldn't blame any of the other singers on the show for being supremely p*ssed off. This moron remains on the show while others with some talent are being sent packing.

67. As a mature woman who is also a musician/voice teacher, I am appalled at the lack of talent that is allowed to get through to the live shows. I know it makes entertaining TV to have the William Hungs and Sanjayas on the tube but this started out at a vocal competition for the cream of the crop to shine and receive the plaudits and accolades they deserve. What happened to this.

As an extra added DEtraction, the judges are really reaching to find something to say. They are not really relating their comments to the performances anymore. In a previous season, If they had TRULY had their ears on, Fantasia, aka, madame screech, would NEVER have made it to the Idol status.

It is a shame that we have come to being ruled by 12 year olds with speed dial on their cell phones. Why do these young creatures even HAVE cell phones to begin with? What are their parents thinking? Now they control the voting????

Don't be all shocked and surprised when Sanjaya wins this thing. Sad commentary on a basically good idea for a contest. This, however, will probably be your last year. I used to enjoy the show. Now I refuse to watch and would rather knit than listen to the mindless pap this show represents.

68. I'm surprised that Jennifer Lopez' appearance didn't help the show's ratings. She's very well known in music, TV and movies. I do think that Jennifer's gushing for Sanjaya was a little chaff and silly. I liked her performance with the pyrotechnics--it made the performance exciting. But that didn't help the ratings either.

69. About 7 of the top 12 I like. The other 5 are boring, bland or don't bring anything new to the competition. The girls are better than the guys this year and they still are trapped in the same kinds of theme weeks. Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez have helped, but the producers need to also hear what people are listening to now. I know they want to focus on songs with melody and lyrics, but some of today's artists are still doing that. And I wish that some singers don't go for soaring numbers by pop singers like Celine, Mariah, Christina, Whitney and others. That'll mess their voice up and they have several weeks left in the competition. And I hope Sanjaya gets removed soon because there are far better singers than him.

71. Listening to Sanjaya is enough to make my ears bleed, but seeing him and his sappy face is just too much! I actually leave the room when he is "singing" if you can call it that Please send him packing, he really needs to leave before the show ends up in the toilet! He is killing it....

72. For every viewer being lost in the U.S. hundreds more are jumping on the bandwagon overseas. Japanese are showing a keen interest in the contestants and judges. Simon, Randy, and Ryan, as usual, are carrying the show. Simon's comments are already being used in universities around the globe to show what honest, straight-from-the-shoulder constructive criticism should be. Don't be fooled by the occasional drop in viewer numbers---this year's hot race at the end without so much professional talent types vying for the rewards is truly amazing.
