Don Imus Canned by CBS Radio -- Ho, Ho, Ho

Imus is firedDon Imus was just fired by CBS Radio in the wake of his "nappy-headed hos" slur, meaning he will no longer be on the air, either on television or radio, effective immediately.

Imus was originally suspended by CBS for two weeks after he made his remark last week on his radio and television shows. MSNBC took the step of pulling his TV simulcast off the air yesterday, but public outrage swelled and advertisers disappeared in droves.

In a statement announcing the firing, CBS chairman Leslie Moonves said:

"From the outset, I believe all of us have been deeply upset and revulsed by the statements that were made on our air about the young women who represented Rutgers University in the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship with such class, energy and talent. Those who have spoken with us the last few days represent people of goodwill from all segments of our society – all races, economic groups, men and women alike. In our meetings with concerned groups, there has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society. That consideration has weighed most heavily on our minds as we made our decision, as have the many emails, phone calls and personal discussions we have had with our colleagues across the CBS Corporation and our many other constituencies."

47. Pathetic. I hope another network picks him up and MSNBC finally goes under. Imus was the best thing that ever happened to that station.

48. I think it is funny that he got fired. He's got the freedom to say anything he wants. He doesn't have the freedom to say anything he wants while employed by CBS.

Therein lies the difference. As an unemployed hate monger, he is now free to call anyone anything he wants.

53. What happened to the first amendment!?!

Is CBS going to get rid of all comedians and rapers that make racist, rude and stupid jokes on their radio and television programs?

How many times have black comedians and rappers made racist and rude remarks about white people? Will CBS fire them?

58. For the record, I SUPPORT Imus 100%. All he is guilty of is exercising his right to freedom of speech and I wholeheartedly defend his right to do so. We can’t pick and choose when freedom of speech applies. We either have that right under any circumstance - public or private - or we shouldn’t have it at all. To let society dictate that we use it only when it suits us and disregard it when we think someone might take offense is ridiculous! What Imus did was express HIS opinion. He wasn’t speaking for anyone else and never said that he was. His views did not represent you or me or the guy next door – only Imus. If he had put his comments to a rap song I guarantee no one would have given it a second thought. Rapper use phraseology like that all the time. Are they censored? NO! Are their CD’s removed from the airwaves because of it? NO! Do sponsors pull out when they hear it? NO! I rest my case. Too bad Imus didn’t put those words to a rap song. He would still have his job today. For all the sponsors who threatened to abandon MSNBC, I will no longer be your consumer. I will not buy your products. Furthermore, MSNBC has lost me as a viewer. I will get my news elsewhere. Chin up, Imus! You have nothing to apologize for.

59. you can email CBS at dan.mason@cbsradio.com. And really TMZ I think you should be mad and not so happy as who knows when your freedom of speech goes down the drain.
