Imus to Satellite Radio? Guess Again...

Don ImusWere I a less morally-scrupulous blogger, I would be tempted to break this (faux) exclusive: "Sirius-XM in Talks with Don Imus." Even though I have no knowledge of this, and even though it's probably true, such talks may be short-lived and ultimately doomed. Here's why:

* Even on satellite radio, advertisers matter. XM is filled with them, and consumer brands consider Imus rat poison. And as Business Week columnist David Kiley noted, "Imus's influence is transcending the size of his audience...[It's] about a quarter of Limbaugh's weekly following and less than half of Stern's. But blue-chip and family-oriented advertisers like Chrysler, Bigelow Tea and The New York Stock Exchange are prepared to pay top dollar to flog their brands on Imus; his show commands advertising rates of $1,333-$1,500 per thousand listeners versus about $1,000 for Limbaugh and Stern, according to industry sources." Not anymore. Strike one.

* Sirius' biggest star, Howard Stern, simply detests Imus. Viz, Stern's on-air rant against him: "If it was me and I did something stupid like that I would just go on and say, 'I'm not going on Al Sharpton's show. Al Sharpton is a piece of s**t. He's just a human being that is bankrupt, and he should pay his bills ... I would rather just leave the radio than apologize to that man...' I like Al Sharpton, by the way."

Alienating off your top talent to hire less popular, radioactive talent? Uh-uh: Strike two.

* The business model of satellite radio may be shifting from backing up dumptrucks filled with cash to more fiscally prudent deal-making. Together, XM and Sirius have nearly 14 million subscribers; combined, they expect to add another 3.5 million net new subscribers if they finally merge this year. But the losses are just as staggering: XM lost $256 million last quarter; Sirius lost $245 million. That's over half a billion dollars in red ink in one quarter. And rampant piracy of Stern's show on BitTorrent and other websites means subscriber growth will be a challenge.

Even assuming Imus could get a gig on satellite, let alone on YouTube or the web, he faces yet another major problem: Guests. Or rather, the lack of them: Politicos like Sen. Chris Dodd and Barack Obama would rather be injected with the Ebola virus than be seen with Imus now; business moguls wouldn't do satellite because he'd lack the combined reach of TV and radio. And the loss of his MSNBC simulcast means that neither serious broadcast journalists like NBC's Brian Williams nor print superstars like Newsweek editor Evan Thomas will be permitted to do an Imus show. Strike three.

Finally, there's the question of whether the public even wants to hear from this guy anymore. As Bob Herbert points out in his NYT column, Imus has a history of hateful, disgusting speech that many people are simply not willing to leave in the past. Writes Herbert, "The real question is whether this controversy is loud enough to shock Americans at long last into the realization of just how profoundly racist and sexist the culture is... It appears that on this issue the general public, and the women at Mr. Imus's former network, are far ahead of the establishment figures, the politicians and the media biggies, who were always so anxious to appear on the show and to defend Mr. Imus."

Friends, Imus may be a celeb, but even the heaviest hitters don't get four strikes. He's outta there.

31. Imus promised to stop racist attacks before but did not keep that promise.
Gwen Ifill was the subject of his racist attack. Another black journalist the same.
The women of Rutgers were not celebrities. They were identifiable, innocent, non-public, human beings of character who were singled out by Imus for obnoxious racist remarks. Three strikes and more over the years. It also is apples and oranges to bring up, as some do, the hip hoppers, gangsta rappers and black comedians. Their cases are inapposite.
That Imus is thought to be a power for good, a good person, not a racist and does charitable work is irrelevant. When the public airwaves are used attacking innocent people of color only one who walks in their shoes or one with empathy understands the hurt generated for them. Obviously SOME of you do not fall into either category.
Yes, Sirius can hire him for more than his measly ten million a year, so that he can keep his Central Park West condominium, his home on Long Island and his ranch in New Mexico. His wife's book will sell to add to the income.
I feel for those long time Circuit City employees who were fired for no reason other to improve this greedy corporation's bottom line. Their $11.59 cent an hour salary was too much to pay. Sen. Dorgan brought that up on C Span. These people may lose everything.
You might want to look into their plight. I for one do not care if Imus was earlier awarded the Nobel Prize. So was Arafat.

32. HELLO OUT THERE!!! Did anyone notice that 2 of the basketball players from Rutgers were WHITE? Imus was lead into his conversation by his executive producer and a sportscaster that were guests on his show. Why didn't they catch heat like he did. I have never listened to his show, but African-American people let all of the rappers of their own race talk bad about their women and it needs to stop. I, for one, am going to stop watching all the programs on NBC, a station that I truly loved, until this happened. I really admired Al Roker---not anymore. He is supposed to be impartial and not allow his personal feelings to interfere with his job. Thank you.

Thats where you are WRONG...I too am a woman,59 to be exact and think it is appaling that he should lose his job over this.I as well as others WILL stop watching these shows because of the unfairness. I absolutley do not agree with the things he did say but he apologized and that should be enough. That is MY OPINION.

37. Dont' waste energy arguing with PC police. They are intellectually dishonest and will not be influenced by (or listen) to any dissenting opinions. Instead, you can make a real difference by joining the ETERNAL BOYCOTT of GM, Staples, Bigalow Tea and P&G. Let CBS and NBC know that you may continue to take watch and listen but will boycott thier advertisers.

38. 11 years ago these same Pollitically Correct Stormtroopers got Bob Grant fired off WABC radio in NY for making a simular comment about the death of Commerce Secetary Ron Brown. Until that time WABC was #1 in that ratings time slot. After Grant's firing, WABC has never been #! sense.
I just threw out all Procter & Gamble products in my house. Colgate Palmolive, Lever Bros. products remained.

39. He, he, he, he, he !!
I do have a life and this is part of it !! I have my own computer and I am allowed to post comments according to the rules and regs of TMZ !!! I find it highly amusing that all the while Mr. Tom Shea is shouting "freedom of speech" on these boards, at the same time he's attempting to silence me.
If you are claiming that Imus should be allowed to voice his opinion, why shouldn't I be allowed to voice mine ?!

40. This is an idiotic article for one reason...Howard Stern said today that if Sirius hired Don Imus, he would have nothing to say about it.

Imus's brother Fred, was hired by Sirius, and they asked Stern if he would mind. Stern said, no...and don't ask me about future hires again. Stern has no control over who is hired at Sirius and who isn't. Stern has a contract, so he can't quit if they hire Imus or Bernard McGuirk, which they probably will. It is well known that Mel Karmazin is good friends with Imus, and once the XM-Sirius merger is approved, Imus will most likely be hired.

Those who don't like it....TUFF.

41. You actually have your own computer, eh truth! Amazing. Do they also allow you sharp objects at the hospital ward you’ve been remanded to?

Did you know that the same type of people who had Imus fired and the same type of people who built the Berlin wall and who operated the concentration camps. Bet you didn't know that.
