Vieira Raps Rev. for Racial "Double Standard"

Meredith Vieira turned the tables on Rev. Al Sharpton this morning, blasting him for not doing enough to stop black rappers from using words like "ho" and "b**ch" in their lyrics while excoriating Don Imus for doing so. Snap!

Sharpton was on the "Today" show this morning to react to Imus' firing by MSNBC, and the Rev. repeated his contention that Imus' place on the "public" airwaves made him responsible -- and ultimately culpable -- for his "nappy-headed hos" remark. Vieira then challenged Sharpton, demanding to know why he didn't hold hip-hop and rap artists more responsible for "spreading the message" of demeaning and abusive language, and accusing Sharpton of perpetuating a "double standard."

The Rev. explained that his organization, National Action Network, was working to get more rappers with "positive messages" onto the airwaves, but acknowledged that those rappers weren't getting exposure.

376. Well, let's see. He is unable to get his side to change for the better, but he has enough power and ego to destroy Imus! One would think he isn't trying real hard with those he likes.

377. I think it is wrong for anyone to put down another person in a mean-spirited way, whether you are white, black, hispanic, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Jew, the Pope, the President, Democrat or Republican, etc. What mean and hurtful words do is perpetuate hate, anger. It always seems as if the hurtful words have the most sting and remain in the memory the longest...causing untold pain for many to overcome. The fact that some people who are not white, can call whites attrocious names and get away with it, is hurtful too. The word SLAVE comes from the Slavic countries of Europe where raiders would kidnap people to become the workers for the kings, etc. The slaves of Africa were sold by other black people of other black raiding tribes. Look at history for all the information you need about slaves, whether they were black or white. Unless we ALL become more aware of our brother or sister...these ugly remarks will continue to be used in negative ways to put down others and make the speaker look bigger and stronger. But FORGIVENESS given and asked for goes a long way at healing the world and bringing peace. Let us all look to ourselves how we all can lessen the burden for others. Name calling is just not good business.

378. Imus was a scapegoat. That intellectual pygmie Al S. and the other one, J.Jackson are both 100 times worse than Imus ever thought of being. They are both racial arsonists. He will be back stronger than ever on satelite radio. Look up the definition of racist. That was not a racist remark.

379. I have always enjoyed Meredith, even back to her days in RI. Excellent job asking the right questions. Why is Sharpton all of a sudden going to do something about the terrible gangster style hip hop music when this music has been out there for yrs? And, why do these people, certainly not musicians, or the least bit talented, have ridiculous recording contracts. Shame on the record/music industry for providing these contracts but shame on those who actually buy the trash!

380. Sharpton is a disgusting person - he is the biggest racist this country knows - he makes me sick!

381.
I also am so sick of the double standards. I wonder what people would do it a black radio or tv or any black entertainer said something terrible about whites, if Jerry Falwell, or Billy Graham would be on every tv show to ruin someones job. I doubt it.
What churches do Sharpton and Jackson preach at but the church of hate and money. They are out and about with hate as soon as the chance comes. Too bad the news keeps on and on with it.
Can we please get on with the real problems in this world?

382. I am one proud black woman that Al Sharpton went after his ass. Who is Imus anyway to talk about anybody? These girls are educated and are doing something with their lives. Who is Meredith to TRY and "blast" Al Sharpton about what he did regarding Imus and not going after rappers. If you are not BLACK you are not going to understand. I know it's not right to call anyone out of their name, but for an old shaggy dog like Imus to down grade them and not think he would have to suffer repercussions, shiiit. Everybody is talking about all the dirt on these black leaders, I say "hey" more future black leaders to sit these race haters down!

383. Media Matters monitors radio programs trying to grab conservatives being politically incorrect. They have targeted Mike Savage, Rush Limbaugh, etc. but their big target is the billionaire record producer --- DAVID GEFFEN, who is supporting Obama.

Both Imus and David Geffen are Liberals who have voiced their dislike of Ms. Clinton. Poor Al Sharpton is just the little front man out there whipping up the crowd.

They will soon enough get to Geffen. He better hope he is rich enough and strong enough for the battle.

385. Al, not so "Sharp," ton is still living in the 60's with a very large chip on his narrow shoulders. He and Jesse Jackson have dedicated their lives to creating and maintaining conflict between blacks and whites. The fuel of racial hatred keeps them happily employed and wealthy. Double standards are a way of life for them. I would suggest that both the blacks and whites pay for their flights to Iraq and let them daily expose their plight to the Muslim television station on Al-Jazeera and live happily ever after. America, let's ignore them and unite as one country under God!

386. I think that SOME people have gotten a little comfortable about race and the fact that it still exists. Just because white people are going around and dating black people, that DOES NOT give everyone an automatic GHETTO PASS to say what ever the freak you want. There are lines and there are boundries. Some words will NEVER be acceptable no matter who you date, how many black people you kick it with, or whatever. There are black people walking around without ghetto passes. Basically what I am saying is: YOU CANNOT SAY WHAT YOU WANT AND EXPECT OTHERS TO JUST ACCEPT IT QUIETLY! I mean really....yeah yeah yeah....I know this is gonna piss people off, but hey I would say the same thing in public to people and fear not the implications because I am not afraid. I can take it.

387. There is indeed a double standard. Major corporations partner with and distribute music by the rappers. Those corporations are white owned. They promote videos on MTV and BET which is white owned under Viacom which is under CBS. They promote the music on many white owned radio stations across the United States. And white youth are the biggest consumers of rap in regards to cd's, merchandise and concert tickets.

I do see a double standard. Plenty of white folk promote and make money (millions) off these rappers. And many white folk are consumers. Yet, white folk act as if they aren't just as GUILTY!!!!!!

388. The Crimes of Al Sharpton –Part 1
 In the Tawana Brawley case, a 15-year-old black girl was found smeared with
feces, lying in a garbage bag, her clothing torn and burned and with various
slurs and epithets written on her body in charcoal. Brawley claimed that she
had been assaulted and raped by six white men, some of them police officers,
in the town of Wappingers Falls, New York. Alton H. Maddox, C. Vernon Mason
joined Sharpton in support of Brawley. A grand jury was convened; after seven
months of examining police and medical records, the jury determined that
Brawley lied about being assaulted by the police. Sharpton, Maddox and
Mason were later successfully sued for statements made in connection with
the case, and ordered to pay $345,000 in damages.
 In 1989 and 1990 Sharpton again beat the odds. First, Sharpton beat a tax evasion
rap, which he called a government vendetta. Then, in 1990, he was acquitted on
charges that he pocketed more than half of the $250,000 he raised through the
National Youth Movement.
 The Crown Heights Riot occurred after a car accident involving the motorcade
for the Lubavitcher Rebbe killing a young boy Gavin Cato. A riot was sparked
after a private Hasidic ambulance came to the scene and, on the orders of a police
officer, removed the Hasidic driver from the scene. Gavin Cato and his cousin
Angela were picked up soon after by a city ambulance. Caribbean-American and
African-American residents of the neighborhood then rioted for four
consecutive days fueled by rumors (in part driven by Sharpton), that the
private ambulance had refused to treat Cato. Al Sharpton became the de-facto
representative for the Cato family. During the funeral he referred to "diamond
merchants" considered a code word for Hasidic Jews, for shedding "the blood
of innocent babies" leading marchers shouting "No Justice No Peace". Sharpton did
not start the riots but his rhetoric was seen as inflammatory and unhelpful in easing
the tension between the black and Jewish communities. A visiting rabbinical
student from Australia by the name of Yankel Rosenbaum, 29 years old, was
killed during the rioting by a mob shouting "Kill the Jew".
 In 2001, Sharpton served a three-month prison term for an act of civil disobedience
consisting in illegally trespassing on U.S. property located on a bombing range in
Vieques, Puerto Rico. Sharpton was imprisoned for protesting the United States
Navy's ongoing bombing and target practices on the island.
 In November 2005, Sharpton appeared in advertisements for LoanMax, an
automobile title loan company. Sharpton was criticized for appearing in the ads, as
LoanMax has been accused of predatory lending charging fees, and for marketing
them to primarily poor, urban and African American audiences. The ads featuring
Sharpton were run in predominantly African American markets.

The Crimes of Al Sharpton –Part 2
 The Rev. Al Sharpton and two other men were convicted and jailed for their roles in
the December 1987 ''day of outrage'' protest, which stalled subways in Brooklyn for
hours.
 Sharpton appeared in a 1983 FBI videotape discussing the laundering of drug
money with mobster-turned-informant Michael Franzese, one-time captain for
the Colombo crime family. Sharpton appears on the tape to offer to broker a
meeting between Don King and a South American drug lord. No indictments
were filed.
 In 1995, he led his National Action Network in an ugly boycott against
Freddy's Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned business that had its rent raised by its
black landlord. Freddy's in turn raised the rent on one of its subtenants, a blackowned
music store. The street leader of the boycott, Morris Powell, was the head
of Sharpton's "Buy Black" Committee. Repeatedly referring to the Jewish
proprietors of Freddy's as "crackers," Powell and his fellow protesters
menacingly told passersby, "Keep [going] right on past Freddy's, he's one of
the greedy Jew bastards killing our [black] people. Don't give the Jew a dime."
Some picketers openly threatened violence against whites and Jews -- all
under the watchful, approving eye of Sharpton. The subsequent picketing
became increasingly violent in tone until one of the protesters eventually shot
four whites in the store, and then set the building on fire -- killing seven
employees, most of whom were Hispanics.
 Sharpton embraced Yasser Arafat in 2001, again for political reasons as he hoped
to unseat Jesse Jackson as the most influential black leftist in the United States.

389. In response to comments made by tired of it.

I am not condoning anything. But let me tell you how it works. Remember when you said that you were in the store behind a 20 year old black female? Well her nails, her hair and her clothes were probably paid for by her abusive drug dealer boyfriend. He beats that ass and probably fathered all three children. That was probably his lexus and he probably does not want her to work. Real talk. I have a friend that is just like that. She gets benefits from the state and she wears the most expensive clothes ( i am talkin dior and d and g!!!) But she can only work where he approves, and go where he says. Yes drives a hummer but it is not hers. I used to get mad at her but now and I feel sorry for her and her situation.

I know its easy to sit back and pass judgement on people because you happen to be on the inside track, trust me I do it to my own race. We are not perfect. No one is. But I do know this:
If you happen to have kids by a man that makes a lot of money, and you happen to have to go to the state for some reason for benefits, They wil tell you to get child support then put you on food stamps and then give you money every month. Who do you think pays for that? ME. YOU. And any other person that got up off their ass to be on the grind. And that's real talk.
