Vieira Raps Rev. for Racial "Double Standard"

Meredith Vieira turned the tables on Rev. Al Sharpton this morning, blasting him for not doing enough to stop black rappers from using words like "ho" and "b**ch" in their lyrics while excoriating Don Imus for doing so. Snap!

Sharpton was on the "Today" show this morning to react to Imus' firing by MSNBC, and the Rev. repeated his contention that Imus' place on the "public" airwaves made him responsible -- and ultimately culpable -- for his "nappy-headed hos" remark. Vieira then challenged Sharpton, demanding to know why he didn't hold hip-hop and rap artists more responsible for "spreading the message" of demeaning and abusive language, and accusing Sharpton of perpetuating a "double standard."

The Rev. explained that his organization, National Action Network, was working to get more rappers with "positive messages" onto the airwaves, but acknowledged that those rappers weren't getting exposure.

31. Um, what happened to "Freedom of Speech"? I thought that was what the great democratic nation of the USA was based on.

I guess it just got thrown out the window by the politically correct mob.

32. Al Sharpton has some redeeming to do before he can be crediable.
Has he been back to Durham, NC to apologize to the La Cross players?
He needs to apologize to each of the falsely accused La Cross players.

Sharpton, if you are a man, do it.

If you are just a big mouth piece and trouble maker--your actions now will speak louder than words.

I don't like Don Imus, however, he was trying to be funny, Shartpton knows this.

NBC will regret their move to fire Imus, betcha you.

33. WHAT IMUS SAID WAS "CLEARLY TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT" AND HE SHOULDNT HAVE GOTTEN A 2 WEEK SUSPENSION OR FIRED. BLACK PEOPLE SAY BLACK RACIAL WORDS TO EACH OTHER ALL THE TIME. THEIR BLACK RAPPERS SINGS OF BLACK RACIAL WORDS. "BLACK PEOPLE LIVE IN A DOUBLE STANDARD WORLD". BLACK PEOPLE NEEDS TO "LEAD BY EXAMPLE">>>"IF YOU DONT WANT TO HEAR RACIAL BLACK WORDS THEN "STOP" SAYING IT TO EACH OTHER AND "STOP" SINGING ABOUT IT". YOU BLACK PEOPLE JUST REMEMBER THIS>>>"WHEN YOU POINT YOUR BLACK RACIAL FINGER AT SOMEONE THERE 3 BLACK FINGERS POINTING BACK AT YOU".

37. Thank you MEREDITH for saying what millions of Americans are thinking: Why is their a Double Standard. I hear rap music w/ waaaaayyyy worse things in the lyrics blasting from stores, restaurants, bars, buses, etc. I can't get away from it. I can turn the channel, but it's on EVERY channel. Talk about a DOUBLE STANDARD, geeeesh. You can't have it one way for white people and one way for black people. It should be ALL one way for ALL people. This is becoming more polarizing and negative than it EVER should have. Good for you, Meredith, took balls, but you called Mr.Sharpton on his flip/flopping and he deserved it. He himself has made racist, stereoptypical remarks, and we shouldn't forget that either!!!!

38. What is even more sad is that the media keeps going to this idiot for responses to any racial matters that hit the spotlight. I do not remember receiving my ballot in the mail for nominating a spokesperson for Black America. And I do not think in the least that Al Sharpton nor Jesse Jackson would get my vote if their names were on the ballot. Why do the media always have to go after the idiots for comments. It just makes us (African-America, Black) look sooooooo bad. We already have enough problems in our community, why feed the stereotype that most are more prone to believe as truth.

39. Finally. I have been thinking this all along. And I was wondering when somebody would say something.

I never really thought much of Meredith Viera...until now.

40. Imus remarks, though undoubtedly unacceptable, may have been what America needs right

now. All of us seem to agree that the remarks were not acceptable but we're all (blacks &

whites) are saying the same thing: Blatant and ridculously rude insults should not be levied

against innocent people, this is not a uncivil society. And comments like that, if not nipped

in the bud early enough, would be just the beginning of such a society. As for the rappers, I

will say that as a Black lady, me and my friends have ALWAYS distanced ourselves from

people who use such inappropriate language such as the "n" or "h" word, etc. People who

use such language appear rather undereducated and seem to only offend themselves by

using it, in my opinion. The late C. Delores Tucker, a 80's and 90's politician, ALWAYS

protested and literally picketted rappers, record labels and their supporters back in the

90's. Had Ms. Tucker had the full support of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and many other s

who are now speaking out, we would have never been at this point.

At this point, we have now agreed we are moving forward in a new

positive direction (white & blacks, etc.) and the negative rappers and other foul-mouthed

joes will have to conform -- to our standards. The standard of a civilized society !

42. Go Meredith.........
Huge congrats to you for speaking up the truth to this so-called "man of the cloth" named SHARPTON, although, believe me, HE'S NOT TOO SHARP!
I respect you sooooo much for bringing up the "double standard". I can't stand coming up to a red light & hearing the most deplorable, ugly language these people think are music to anyone's ears as they wear such large ugly bling.

My husband & I say. good for you & go girl. Please speak for all of us.

44. It's about time that the media started commenting on the racial double standard going on. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson discriminate more than Mel Gibson, Michael Richards, Isaiah Washington, and Don Imus combined. The National Action Network and Rainbow Push are racist organizations, period. Thank you to Meredith as well as Rosie O'Donnell and Rose McGowan today on "The View" for finally taking a stand.

45. Sharpton and Jackson to me are more trouble than they are worth..They get all these black communities in an uproar about racial problems, and they should be honest with them and urge them to change, Bill Cosby had the balls to say it like it is..these other two clowns just make things worse..and may I add get paid very well for it..Stop the double standard, take the low life rapper gangstas off the air, speak proper english, get a good job, show some respect towards other people. We all live in this place together, we all control our own destiny...Quit looking for the handouts and do something with your lives.
