Vieira Raps Rev. for Racial "Double Standard"

Meredith Vieira turned the tables on Rev. Al Sharpton this morning, blasting him for not doing enough to stop black rappers from using words like "ho" and "b**ch" in their lyrics while excoriating Don Imus for doing so. Snap!

Sharpton was on the "Today" show this morning to react to Imus' firing by MSNBC, and the Rev. repeated his contention that Imus' place on the "public" airwaves made him responsible -- and ultimately culpable -- for his "nappy-headed hos" remark. Vieira then challenged Sharpton, demanding to know why he didn't hold hip-hop and rap artists more responsible for "spreading the message" of demeaning and abusive language, and accusing Sharpton of perpetuating a "double standard."

The Rev. explained that his organization, National Action Network, was working to get more rappers with "positive messages" onto the airwaves, but acknowledged that those rappers weren't getting exposure.

79. I too am thoroughly disgusted with Imus and his comments and am glad to see him being raked over the coals for this; deservedly so. But, I have to pose this question. While Imus comments were disgusting and degrading to all women and anyone of color, who purchases gangster rap music and hip hop music in which all women but especially women of color are continually degraded and defiled? African American men and women. That's who. Until blacks discontinue feeding the careers of the likes of Snoop dog, the use of hateful words like "black bitches and hos" will continue to be used by blacks and whites alike. QUIT SUPPORTING GANGSTER RAP AND HIP HOP AND START FIGHTING BACK FOR RESPECT AND DIGNATY!!!!

80. Doesn't the good Rev. know that before rap no one used the word HO, other than Santa. The word was whore before which meant a bad girl. The word HO could mean something endearing now.

Like Merideth said, society latches onto that word or phrase and it becomes an everyday thing.

Heck, even I had a birthday cake for my last birthday which said Happy Birthday B**ch As* Ho printed on it and I laughed....thought it was very funny! I'm 50 years old, white and have only had 1 man in my life so certainly I am no whore, the b**ch part, well I'm a red head so that could be true at times. Along with the Cake I received a Hip Hop Dictionary with all the words in the rap songs.

Next time you are at a stop light and hear the boom boom playing in the car beside you. See the white boy or girl rapping along with the CD and they are saying words that are forbidden, not only that but the lyrics are very sexual! I am shocked that they are saying the N word along with the cd but that's what is on the CD! So, of course, these words get into the mainstream and people say them and don't think anything about it.

Maybe those millions of CDs should not be sold to races other than African Americans. That way other races can't grab onto the raps and become mainstream but it's too late now. It looks as though all the young people are buying rap now and I am positive many people of different races are paying for those rappers fancy homes, limos, 1st class airfare, Attorney Fees when trouble happens etc.

Don't tell me those girls haven't been called that and probably use the phrase themselves. I don't watch sports and certainly wouldn't even know this Rutgers Team if it hadn't been for Imus and his mess. Heck, now that girl's basketball team is famous!! The whole world knows about them!

It's all about the Benjamins baby!!

So waz zup??

84. Someone already posted this but...

This word "ho" comes from the word "whore". That word comes from the Indo-European root qar- , "to like, desire". It is first found in late Old English as hóre, which refers to adulterly/prostitution.

86. Thank you so much Meredith for calling Sharpton on the carpet. Enough is enough..........Al Sharpton -- stop with your double standards and your situational ethics -- practice what you preach..... put the same demands out there to everyone who abuses free speech -- DEMAND that all rappers talking trash be fired from their labels and DEMAND their music be removed from shelves....if we're going stop free speech - stop it EVERYWHERE.......

87. I am so sick of the double standard. So called minorities get all in a wad over a comment someone white says and they sue and/or the white person loses their job. Al Sharpton and the so called RVD Jesse Jackson need to call on their own people. Talk about racists!!! Everytime a black person gets offended look who you see on the news screaming discrimination. I am really sick of it and if we don't stand up and say YOU ARE THE RACISTS, it is never going to stop. Grow up and find a different cause to sue!!! Money hungry, media whores!!!

89. You go girl! It's about time someone stepped up to Sharpton. But I can't believe MSNBC and all those other companies caved in. That's pretty darn sad, but that's our society these days it seems. I truly hope Sharpton does something productive in his life like get rid of all the offensive language and lyrics MOST rappers are known for. I totally agree there is a double standard in the country. Justice shall be served all across the board, not just for a select few. But until WE stand up for ourselves and our rights, nothing will ever change!
