NBC -- Oh, the Humanity. Oh, the Ratings!

4/19/2007 11:42 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Minutes after the vile press kit sent from the Virginia Tech killer arrived at NBC studios in New York yesterday, one sound clearly resonated through Rockefeller Center -- cha-ching!

While the network did a great job quickly putting together riveting news packages in a short time, and making sure the tapes were rushed to the FBI rather quickly -- they also did a swell job of first making copies of all the horrific contents for themselves. Then, on the same day that it was announced that NBC was getting whooped in the ratings, the blitzkrieg promotion campaign began.

After spreading the haunting, pathetic video of the killer over the course of last night's 30-minute NBC Nightly News broadcast -- and masterfully teasing even more disgusting clips every step of the way -- Brian Williams warned a shell-shocked nation that his network would do everything in its power to "prevent any more martyrs or heroes from emerging from the tragedy" -- then, in the same breath, he teased more scumbag TV on this morning's "Today Show." Dude, we get the game -- don't try to hide it.

Like 9-11 this is a journalists wet dream and is so pathetic. It is no longer about reporting the news, the facts, it is about who has more shock value, make the story big, looming, huge so people are hooked into watching. Ratings and $$$. Ethics have fallen down by the roadside somewhere long ago.
Does anyone remember when Walter Cronkite reported the death of JFK? He was so choked up that he could barely speak, barely utter the words to the public. The gleam in his eyes where those of genuine tears of sadness. He grieved with America as he reported that sad, sad news.
Now the gleam that you see in the eyes of reporters is ratings, not tears, but excitement.
As Americans, some where we need to draw that line and say, "No more!"

Nona- what do you call what you are doing? The same thing! This is a forum to discuss views anonymously, we don't get any media coverage for this? Get a life!

I am disgusted with all of the media outlets. What scumbags NBC managers etc were to pass the videos on to every one else. They have absolutely no respect for the victims or their families. SHAME ON THEM! Anything to make a buck. I wrote to every outlet possible including TMZ for plastering the pictures of the murderer pointing his gun--SICK BASTARDS. The media is no different than he was. How many copy cat shootings will there be now because of the broadcast of his tapes.

all this coverage on the killing needs to stop. All it does it pave the way for more mass murders like this one. why do you think so many school shootings started after columbine because of all the media coverage. It makes other kids think about doing the same thing. we need to not cover these stories in the media so much it does nothing but increase the probability of another school shooting like this one. THE COVERAGE NEEDS TO STOP.

I think it's disgusting and incredibly callous to show these pictures. Shame on NBC, and you too, TMZ.

There isn't a damn thing wrong with NBC giving the country the exclusive video, writings and pictures that they received from that psycho. Are you telling me any other network or media outlet wouldn't have done the same exact thing?? They are reporting the news and this IS news. People want to know what motivated that freak and NBC is just sharing what he sent to them. Get over it. If it sickens you that much then turn off the TV.

NBC's actions are deplorable but remember it's not the news charity or the news morality or the news friends society. This is the news BUSINESS! Whenever you are outraged or horrified by something you see or hear ask yourself how does this impact their bottom line. NBC is in the business of making money. If they have something no one else has and that drives viewers to their network, it's a no-brainer from thier viewpoint. Imus was fired because the SPONSORS started pulling out. I'm surprised that people are surprised. This goes on everyday.

Nice going Steve Cappus (president of NBC). You canceled the Imus show, but you"ll show some horrific images that have been played over and over again. I think a statement that was made one time is much less offensive than the trash you decided to show for ratings yesterday. Aren't you the one who said, "ENOUGH is ENOUGH" when you fired Don Imus? You really are a hypocrite. NO LONGER AN NBC WATCHER!

#25- How can the media fill you with hatred? They present information and how you process it is up to you.

What do you think NBC is, a charity? It is their business to report the news. Why shouldn't this have been shown? Showing this footage does not diminish in any way the memory of those poor victims at VT, it shows that this one person was crazy. Some students were on NPR this morning saying that seeing the footage made them feel better, that it showed there was nothing the University could have done to prevent it.
