Sanjaya -- The Drama Before the Drama

America has finally drop-kicked the smiley "Idol" wannabe into the last of fame's fifteen minutes, but it wasn't the first stage on which little Sanjy faltered.

TMZ has obtained some classic video of a 9-year-old Malakar performing in a local production of "Bugsy Malone" -- a musical with children playing mobsters -- where the rejected "Idol" performs an amusing tap dance with a broom.

The Hawaii Children's Theatre performance was recorded in 1999, but there are already signs of some of his infamous traits -- the cheesy Mariah hand waves, his studied pre-teen chicken-necking, and signature note reaching. A star was born!

76. Ok i have cried everyday since Sanjaya got off. He was great and anybody who says he's not, i would like to see you go on stage an try what he accomplished. He was the one that always had fun and was always exciting (not just casue of his hair) but because he put his personality out there. He really inspired me. I will never forget him and i will miss him dearly.

78. COME ON PEOPLE! ALL PAULA SAID WAS HE WILL BE OK THAT DOESNT MEAN SHE HAD NO SYMPATHY FOR SANJAYA. LIKE ANY OTHER CONTESTANT YOU GO INTO A CONTEST SOME GO ON SOME DO NOT. THE BOY HAD HIS MOMENT OF FAME. IT IS NOT OVER FOR HIM. HE WILL BE TOURING ETC. I AM TIRED OF THE MEDIA PUTTING THEIR OWN LABELS ON THINGS AND TRYING TO STIR PEOPLE UP.
NOW SEE YOU GOT ME ALL STIRRED UP

79. Yes, let's pick apart Sanjaya's life now and see what unnewsworthy things we can find to rag on. So he was in school plays when he was a kid. So were a lot of us.

81. It was time the kid left. Obviously. But my theory as to why this week? When 48 college students are shot down for no good reason on a Monday morning and 33 of them die, I suspect some of the fun was gone in voting for the worst of American Idol. There were a lot of kids at candlelight vigils on Tuesday. Maybe Sanjaya seemed a little trivial to the high school and college age crowd. I would hope so. Reality T.V., after all, has very little to do with reality.

85. I like sanjaya and it has nothing to do with his hair or Howard Stern. There are a lot of immature, jealous people out there who do not have minds of there own and go along with the crowd--ignore them sanjaya --you do have fans who support you--hang in there. by the way--I am 45 not 13.

86. We cheered so loud at the outsting of San...whatever his name is! Everytime he got a chance to perform we were sickened. Even all of you so called supporters knew he sucked. You just wanted to jump on a band wagon to have something to argue with people over. Put your support into something that is worth it...all the time you spend blogging how great he was, you could have sent off tons of letters of support to our troops! Now that is something worth standing behind.

87. atlast---You need to grow up--quick trying to speak for every one else,,you have no idea what you are talking about--go sit in a corner some where and hate your self--you probably already do--as far kas i am concerned --sanjaya is more mature and is also way above the haters--I can't believe that any one would actually take the time to write that sanyaya should die---grow up or better yet--go get some real help.

88. Please Sanjaya is by no means a has-been or a wannabe. Love him or hate him, you are still talking about him aren't you? Exactly.
