"Vulgar" Richard Gere -- India's Most Wanted

Richard Gere is in even more hot vindaloo over that public kiss he planted on a Bollywood star last week.

Today, an Indian court issued a warrant for his arrest, and now Gere could face up to three months in prison for his PDA if convicted.

Judge Dinesh Gupta issued the warrants in Jaipur, according to the Press Trust of India, saying that Gere and actress Shilpa Shetty "transgressed all limits of vulgarity" during their appearance at an HIV/AIDS event, captured on tape. Judge Gupta also called the TV footage "highly sexually erotic," and slammed Shetty for not resisting Gere's "advances."

As we showed you last week, angry Indian throngs have burned Gere in effigy to protest the incident, though Shetty has defended Gere's behavior.

It's not clear what Gere plans to do in response, though he's been a frequent visitor to India to support a number of health and social causes.

Gere, through his rep, had no statement to make.

16. But it's ok to beat and rape a woman in India? India gave us Sanjaya and his family--mom and sis were arrested for marijuana possession---is this ok also in India? I hope all Americans boycott India--don't go there, don't buy anything from that country!!! And let's all send pix of us getting kissed!!!!

18. This is ridiculous. What is he doing? All Richard Gere has done is kiss her on the cheek. Its not like he grabbed her breasts or her ass. Since when is a kiss on the cheek considered highly sexual. The judge that ruled on the case is a moran. I don't know the rules in India, but this is just ridiculous.

19. It's is amazing to me that a country and culture that gave us the Karma Sutra Which is like 40 or something positions to please your partner sexually would be so hipicritical when it comes to a kiss on the cheek just a bunch of closet perverts I guess

21. Arrested? It was all in jest! Richard Gere is an American! India is whacked. They are just looking for some publicity for their own sorry ass country. Jealous of the American way. Those old Indian men, just wishing it was them. Give me a break?

23. RG treated shilpa with disrespect. grabbing her like that on an AIDs TV show . forcing himself on her. I am sure if he tried to get touchy with an american actress like he did shilpa, they would have pressed charges against him.

24. Forcing himself on her? He didn't throw her down and rape her. He bent her over, in a joking manner, and kissed her on the cheek. She was laughing and smiling the entire time. It being their culture or not, it's ridiculous to put out an arrest warrant for someone who kisses a chicky on the cheek. But then again, I personally have no patience for a group of people who will starve whilst cows roam around being worshipped. Hey, did you guys in India hear that there's an illegal war going on in Iraq? You wanna arrest someone, arrest that moron Dubya, at least he would deserve it. Dumbasses!!

25. Gere should not have done this. Americans abroad need to learn how to respect the customs, cultural beliefs, and taboos of other cultures. You can tell by the footage that Shilpa Shetty is uncomfortable with his advances: just look at her body language---leaning away from him, putting her hands up in a quasi-defensive posture, and finally just looking absolutely wide-eyed (afraid? uncomfortable?) as he literally *bends her over* and plants kiss after kiss on her face. His actions were inappropriate, and he has placed a young woman's career in jeopardy with his thoughtlessness.

And for those of you slamming India and/or Indian culture, I hate to break it to you, but the United States has just as many "absurd," "prudish," and "ridiculous" customs as any other country in the world. You just can't see it because you are incapable of looking at the U.S. from the outside in. I feel sorry for you.

26. Screw 'em. Besides, I didn't think there were any Slurpee Indians left over there. I thought they all moved here to run nasty motels and convenience stores.

27. Once again, too many misinformed and poorly educated in our country impose their own set of so-called "values" on another country and culture and conclude that what he did was no big deal. Any public display like this is a major no-no in this country and culture. Surprisingly, Gere who is presumably well versed and knowledgeable about both made a major blunder; perhaps his karma was off that day, his chakras misaligned and his spirit was invaded by a pervert from a past life. I do think it interesting that a nation which is fraught with so many other ills singles out this sort of thing for possible jail time. Go figure!

28. I'm sorry but if India would actually stick with thier own rules then I could see their case, but they only have gotten this strict in the last 10yrs, and are being run by a military/religious caste system that treats the poor badly, women badly etc. They are hypocrites, contradicting hypocrites.

29. This is a shame.

Shilpa Shetty worked U.K TV hard, trying to promote Indian women as modern and glamorous. Now she has to put up with this back home.

30. How scary is it that a kiss on the cheek can be seen this way. He was CLEARLY joking around and so was she. Seems to me that if the Indian government puts Richard In jail for this they are clearly stuck in the stone age. I mean the guy does countless funding raising and public awareness campaigns. And this is how they re pay him!!!!!! It's a scary world out there to be a do good-er surely has is danger!!! My thoughts and prayers are with you Richard! And I hope that the American government comes to your aide.
