32. Gere should have been more aware of the conservative cultural climate in India, but the Indian population is overreacting a bit much as a result of this. They have bigger fish to fry in that country--poverty, HIV/AIDS issues (ironic that an event fundraising for this was where the offense occured). I can understand him getting a slap on the wrist for this, but to put him in jail is ridiculous.

If Shilpa Shetty is going to get punished however, that would be a disgrace to the country. She did nothing.

33. I don't even know where to start with some of you ignorant asses. It's embarrasing to hear some of you blabber stupidity. Okay INDIA is not perfect just like AMERICA is not perfect. Indians are not perfect just like AMERICANS are not perfect. This "ACT" would be considered SEXUAL HARRASEMENT over HERE!!!!! I don't think you would appreciate Indians calling you BURGER EATING FAT ASSES... now would you??? Let's not even go into the foreign policy. There are plenty of domestic violence going on here... in fact I can think at least 5 celebs who are/were victims of domestic violence. Mostly every hip hop album has a video vixen shaking her ass.... There are over 700,000 thousand homeless people in the US. And growing child poverty in this country. And WE are NOT a third world country.

38. This is just stupid. If India cannot handle American culture and customs maybe they shouldn't handle all of those jobs we send over there. We should be more than willing to bring those jobs back to the US and let India keep its customs. Look at it this way, if it had been Saudi, they would have chopped both their heads off. This is all part of the export of American culture around the world. Everyone wants the prosperity of the US, but not the "freedom" that comes alone with it.

40. Bravo V. ! I agree entirely with all your comments. If Gere choses to go to India, he should observe their customs whether he consider them stupid or not. You would think that he would be well versed on their customs before taking a public stand on AIDS & condoms, then negating it all be bending her over backwards and smooching her when she was clearly uncomfortable - talk about mixed messages! This was a stupid joke and he made himself look foolish. If he wants to observe American customs, stay home! If he insists on travelling abroad, show respect for the country's customs whether he agrees with thim or not. Make a public apology now to save at least her dignity, if not his own.

41. He didn't respect the culture. When you go to another country, you need to know what you are doing. While they are in other countries, this idiot celebs love to bash this great country, but when they leave and try to act as they would here, they get in trouble. Then they expect the country they just bashed to get them out of the problem they themselves created. United States of America is becoming a huge pretzel in its efforts to be all inclusive and offend no one. Pardon me, but we are losing our culture because rather than assimilate to this country and become American, this country is supposed to assimilate to those coming here and become who they were. I agree with the poster who said try this in Saudi Arabia and you'd get your head chopped off. Because people here try to turn America into any and every other country to accommodate everyone, some think all other countries will do the same. They will NOT obviously. So, we need to get smart and protect our culture and respect the cultures of other countries. Mr. Gere is finding out his fame and money mean nothing in India.

45. This whole thing is ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. What an oppressive country. He should just tell them to F-off and just never go back. I'm sure the US gov would protect him. Any "culture" that embraces cow urine as sacred has obvious judgement problems. They should worry more about taking my call when I have a technical problem with my Directv, and less about cow urine and cheek kissing.
