64. Okay let me give you all a quick run down of what happens. There are special interest groups in India just like over here.... ie. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, NRA etc... representing various factions and beliefs of society. Just like over here, they wait for some controversy to get some attention. They bring it to the attention of the judicial system and if a retarded judge hearing the case feels that there is substance to the claim, then they will proceed with a trial. BUT AGAIN, THIS DOES NOT REPRESENT THE 1 BILLION + people who live in India. The trial then goes through a series of judical processes before anything can be done. I don't agree with this whole controversy and so do a lot of Indians. This is absolutley ridiculous and baseless!!! The funny thing is that this is not even front page news in Indian sites. NO ONE CARES... But it's all over MSN, YAHOO, ABC here... BUT anyone know anything about the 9 soldiers that got killed yesterday in Iraq??????

66. Simple solution - Richard goes to India, accepts the penalty and then discontinues any future visits or charity work . Clearly, given the egregious nature of the offense, India would be honor bound to refuse to receive any charitable donations made to these various charities as a direct result of his efforts. The end.

69. SURELY, Gere knew that PDA wasn't allowed! He asked to be imprisoned. It doesn't matter whether or not we think it is "no big deal", it is their custom to NOT show PDA and he should have respected that. Like I said, he HAS to have known having been a "frequent visitor" to the area.

71. The point is we are all looking at it from OUR perspective as Americans. They are looking at it from THEIR perspectives at Indians. When you go to another country, you respect THEIR culture, AGREE with it or NOT.

72. Most of the Americans who have posted comments here look CHUTIYAS (big-assholes) to me. I'm not saying that for every american but only those who post demeaning remarks. I've many American friends who are sensible enought to understand the gravity of the matter. They may (and even I) try to laugh it off but if a country's culture demands some sensitivity you must give due consideration. When in Rome, do as Romans do! Or keep your asses stick to yout couch.

I agree that perhaps there are overreactions from Indians but mind you that this hype is a product of media companies who wants to seel their news content.

People in India and America are totally human with some specific set of values, beliefs and lives to live in whatever way they want to. Levelling down to yelling rat-worshippers or job-takers is utterly cheap! Indians worship nature in all its aspects..and yes kama sutra too..but things are considered appropriate only in privace here. RG (and Shetty) too should have saw it coming coz' they are not butt-heads anyway.

Which American would like to see orgies going on at their streets in large-scale. You call yourselves "free", huh! And even if your culture supports it, for how long do you think you would be able to enjoy that provided every man and woman and child is nude all the time. You would loose the desire to produce babies if you go that far, mind you.

Re: donations, everyone donates one thing or another. What about those millions of foreigners who visit Indian soil in search of salvation and yoga initiation. They get what they seek only in INDIA!

73. I find this difficult not to laugh at but I'm educated enough to realize and accept that India has its own unique culture and I guess I need to respect this. However, it doesn't mean I don't roll my eyes and genuinly think it's ridiculous. OK though... enough said. So here's my question. What if a tourist or "charity participant" visiting India is from a country like France where a greeting of a kiss on the check is from what I understand pretty normal. What if this Frenchman (or woman) greets someone in this manner while in India? It's a natural gesture that might inadvertantly just happen even though the French person might know it's taboo in India. Would he/she be charged and/or condemned as publicly as "American" and "Bollywood" "stars" Gere and Shetty?
Sorry, I still can't stop rolling my eyes and shaking my head at the thought of this. And don't worry, I'm not inclined to visit a country that is so culturally different from my own. I prefer to support my local community.

Wow, I'm not trying to name call here, but your comments seem very ignorant to me. How can you stereotype over 1 million people as "a vile excuse for humanity" ? That is a horrible thing to say, you should be ashamed of yourself. You tread down a dangerous path when you condemn an entire country or culture because of some crap you read on the internet. Although some of comments you made may have been based on facts about some Indians, or older Indian culture, please thing twice before applying this to an entire population.

75. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!! I am embarrased to be Indian!! India is looking to arrest Gere for kissing on the cheek?!?!?!?! What about the red light district in India, child prostitution, etc.... jeez...that is what I call unacceptable sexual behavior. Also, for those who think the culture in India is not accepting of this behavior...yeah right...whenever I go back to India...I am bombarded with billboards of Bollywood actors and actresses KISSING...in Bed...wearing close to nothing. They just want Gere to fork over some money to the corrupt government
