"Vulgar" Richard Gere -- India's Most Wanted

Richard Gere is in even more hot vindaloo over that public kiss he planted on a Bollywood star last week.

Today, an Indian court issued a warrant for his arrest, and now Gere could face up to three months in prison for his PDA if convicted.

Judge Dinesh Gupta issued the warrants in Jaipur, according to the Press Trust of India, saying that Gere and actress Shilpa Shetty "transgressed all limits of vulgarity" during their appearance at an HIV/AIDS event, captured on tape. Judge Gupta also called the TV footage "highly sexually erotic," and slammed Shetty for not resisting Gere's "advances."

As we showed you last week, angry Indian throngs have burned Gere in effigy to protest the incident, though Shetty has defended Gere's behavior.

It's not clear what Gere plans to do in response, though he's been a frequent visitor to India to support a number of health and social causes.

Gere, through his rep, had no statement to make.

106. All this negativity toward's Gere's actions can be put down to in-equality between men and women in India and religious piety. India will never progress like China until there is no caste system, eradicate the male over dominance in society, and women are allowed to speak openly and decisively. Those women that do so now are the urbanised elite. But India is dominated by rural classes and religious ideals stuck in a time warp. We are human beings, so until human rights prevail to the standards in the western democracies, Indians who say to westerners to respect Indian customs and traditions deserve no respect.

107. Chill guys. In a country of about a billion people and hundreds of towns and cities a few dozen people go out burning effigies on the streets of no more than four towns and the media here screams ' The Kiss that Shocked India ' or Jon Stewart on the Daily Show - " Protests Rock India " or look at TMZ's own sensational headline. Indians including Shilpa Shetty ( the actress in question ) didn't care much about it. And please stop asking people to respect our conservative culture. We ain't no Saudi Arabia. We gave the world the Kamasutra, the sculptures in Khajuraho, the raunchy Bollywood movies and the anuual Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar ( scantier clothed models than Victoria Secret's calendar ).

108. ...The judge is probably some right wing conservative moron who has no idea what indian culture and sensibilities are anyway....if you look at the history of us indians you will see texts like the karma sutra, carvings at hindu temples of extreme sexual behaviour and so forth...in fact when the british came over they regarded the hindus as people who follow a "pornographic religion" - they were shocked at the type of sexual behaviours that went on in india...but then - some indians internalized this colonial attitude...hence the ultra conservatism that is prevalent in some parts of india only...

Richard Gere would have gotten away with that, and more in say...Goa....so please, remember that not all indians are the same, and we dont all share the same values...

The hypocrisy is that he committed this freindly gesture in delhi, which is the "rape capital of the world"...delhi has such a high rate of rape because the entire system of law is so corrupt and depraved that no one listens to a rape victim...but ohh no..Richard Gere is the criminal!!!

109. Thank you Richard Gere! Now the United States can stop sending our tax dollars to the tune of Billions per year to India as I 'm certain they don't want our tainted money any longer because we think it's perfectly okay for Richard Gere to kiss a woman in the name of film and theatre.
Yes, India I know right now is returning our BILLIONS to them and demanding that we no longer send them our tainted money. Now that money can be used to help our fellow American victims of Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq war, our uninsured children and our 40 million American poverty victims. Again, thank you very much Mr.Gere for exposing the hypocrisy of India as we need our BILLIONS in tax dollars for own needy Americans!

110. Hi all,

Richard's humiliation in such un-befitting manner is highly embarrasing for most sensible Indians.

In Today's paper, Prahlad Kakker (a famoous Ad-Guru) most openly condemns the migistrates action and offers his apologies on behalf of All Indians.

Unfortunatley, there are a lot of un-educated (not illiterate) people here who have enough time to create rucuss in an attempt to golrify thier existence. And these are the people who do not deserve to live in a country like ours. The people who had blown up the matter are the ones who would resort to all kinds of violence towards women in thier vicinity at the least relevant instance.

Being an Indian, I would like to do my part and offer apologies to those who have been hurt by the incident. I myself am a strong believer of the Indian culture, and I am ashamed the way the matter has been treated.

I would also humbly request you all not to have any generalised opinion about our country. Like Kakker says, a vast majority consists of the Silent people who would react only when the situation is way beyond control. People like me are around to support Richard and anyone is wronged here.

but for all those chutiya guys who have:

-no respect for others,
-resemble the children of extremely rich fathers who never taught them manners
-think India is Buddhist country
-think India is all about rat-worshiping
-think Indian costume is stupid
- think Indians are hypocrite (Did they every dig into the root of matter)
- think most Indians treat woman badly (IT IS JUST A SMALL % YOU MORONS AND EVEN WE ARE TRYING TO ERADICATE THAT UNEDUCATED BEHAVIOR)
- think they are giving jobs to India (WHY DOES NOT THAT F***NG ASSHOLE DOES ALL THE WORK HIMSELF INSTEAD OF GETTING HELP FROM INDIANS OR FROM ANYOTHER PART OF THE WORLD)
