Miss America Tempts Predators, But Will She Testify?

There she isn't.

Miss America Lauren Nelson helped police nab 11 alleged sexual predators by posing as a 13-year-old online -- and actually greeted them at a "sting house" -- but now she might be wrecking prosecutors' cases against the suspects by refusing to testify against the scumbags.

Just today, in a statement to TMZ, Suffolk County D.A. Thomas Spota called on Nelson to cooperate with his investigation, but admitted yesterday to Newsday that one case might already be "compromised" if Nelson won't go back to Long Island to testify against the alleged predators. The D.A.'s office wouldn't specify what it might do to compel Nelson to take the stand.

The beauty queen participated in the sting op in conjunction with the television series "America's Most Wanted." The episode featuring Nelson aired last Saturday.

Late this morning, "America's Most Wanted" shot back, saying in a statement on its website that Nelson never said she wouldn't cooperate, adding, "We don't know why the D.A. would make the comments attributed to him without knowing all of the facts." Telephones at the Miss America Organization gave a busy signal this morning.

UPDATE: Apparently Miss America's had a change of heart. In a statement just sent to TMZ, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota says, "This afternoon, I received a telephone call from the attorney for the Miss America organization to assure me that despite the fact that we were originally told her schedule would prevent her from doing so, Ms. Nelson now fully understands her legal obligations. The attorney said she would be available to testify, if necessary, in the prosecution of those arrested in the recent undercover sting conducted in Suffolk County."

16. Wait - she pretended she was a 13 year-old ONLINE. Not in person. Doesn't matter how old she looks.
I do think she was either stupid or naive to not think she would be called upon to testify in these cases. It is her duty now to testify.

17. Most Wanted folks are trying to be like To Catch a Predator but they did a bad job. To Catch is so much better at catching the bad guys, let them do it. Most Wanted should just stay out of it.

21. I saw this episode on last weekend AMW. She made it clear that her "mission statement" as Miss America was in fact to teach young children about the dangers of the internet, and she felt honored to be in a real life role where she could in fact make a difference.

Ok sweety, sounds good---but if this report is true, you my dear are toast in all Americans eyes.

She did greet the pervs at the door but only briefly, and was wearing a ball cap and a teenage kind of outfit...if you were a perv who had been conversing with her on line and than drove to meet her, upon arriving your hormones wouldnt know the difference between 13 or 25, and they all gladly stepped in and got busted.

She better show up in court or John Walsh will kick her ass personaly after a stunt like that.

22. I think her platform was something about children, if I'm not mistaken. She got her TV time in front of the cameras, and I guess that's the real important issue for her. It seems that Miss America can talk the talk, but can't walk the walk. If she really wanted to do some good in the world, she should testify against this predator so they can lock his A-- up.

Er, the guys met 21 year old hottie at the door and came in. I would too.

25. Geez, people, we are talking about a 19-year-old girl. "Whore"? "Bitch"? What is wrong with you people?! I have met Lauren, and saw her crowned Miss Oklahoma and Miss America. Regardless of what people think about pageants (and I haven't been a fan in the past), she is a very sweet and genuine girl. She is not in charge of her own schedule this year, and I'm sure she had no say at all regarding whether she could go back to Long Island to testify. So just lay off her. The good news is that she did help catch some pretty sick people. Give her a little credit, and show a little class.

27. i actually now her. shes from my home town and has been friends w/ my sis for a few years. SHE REALLY COULD PASS FOR A 13 YEAR OLD. of course the world only sees her w/ tons of make-up and big hair. she probably just thought she would be too busy to. i dont think shes been home to lawton but once or twice since the pageant. they fly the winner all over the country on a daily bases for appearances and such. SHE IS NOT A BAD PERSON OR A BAD ROLE MODEL. she really is probably the most(sickeningly) perfect person ive ever known.

28. She got into the "temptation" mood by having a constant stream of Gene Simmons types doing 5 minutes on her under the desk while she pecked away at the keyboard.

29. Lauren is sweetheart,I admire her for what she did in taking down these perverts. I'am sure if needed Misss America organization can rearrange her schedule so she can testify. I wish Lauren could be the mother of my childern.

30. Have any of you ever testified in court? There never is a specific date and time; as the day approaches, you are given notice of an estimated time. Lauren never, ever said she would not testify. With her full schedule, adjustments will have to be made, however she has been prepared from the start. There are a lot of pedophiles and defense attorneys that are pissed at her, and this was nothing short of a pathetic pop shot. To say this is a publicity stunt is absurd. Lauren spent the entire morning of April 30 (the day before this story broke) at a Las Vegas Children's Hospital visiting every single child - there were no cameras, no crowds, and her crown was in a wooden box. Mr. Spota, Miss Nelson has always understood her legal obligations, and to imply otherwise is simply rude and misleading to the public. I only wonder what the real motive is here. Your quote today was an obvious face-saving attempt. You probably were dealing with Lauren's staff, attempting to arrange specific dates and times. She may have been prevented for a specific date, however a reasonable attorneys accommodate, as I am sure you did and will. Get off her case.
