Imus to CBS -- You Wanted "Irreverent," Now Pay Up!

Don Imus may get the last laugh -- because the contract he signed with CBS seems to court the very behavior that got him fired.

In Imus' multi-year contract with CBS Radio, seen by CNN's Jeffrey Toobin, the shock jock was told by his employer to be "irreverent" and "controversial. " CBS fired Imus for his "nappy-headed hos" comment. The question for a jury: Did Imus give CBS exactly what it wanted?

Imus is still owed $40 mil on the five-year deal. CBS is clearly in a bind, because not only does the contract require Imus to be "irreverent" and "controversial" but the document says those qualities are "desired by Company" and "consistent with Company rules and policies."

The fired shock jock has lawyered up with one of the country's top trial attorneys, Martin Garbus, who says that Imus plans to file a wrongful breach of contract suit against CBS.

76. They should not have fired him in the first place, so either give him the job back or pay up. He might have stepped over the line, but the were nudging him in that direction with a contract term like that. People make mistakes. I hope he gets all the $ he is owed.

77. yur benton:

Quote: "Are you all nuts. NOBODY deserves $40,000,000. How much are you earning???????? "

What entertainer should be getting the obscene amounts of money they are getting paid these days? I agree with you on that. But that is not the issue here. He signed a contact with them, and they said they would pay him that much. The point is not what his income is, but if they did indeed breach the contract. If so they should pay-up.

I personally think many entertainer and athletes (& CEO's) are getting way too much money. But again, that is not the issue at hand.

78. Imus should get the 40 mil, and more. He should also sue CBS for punitive damages because they acted in bad faith.

79. Don Imus got caught in the intersection of change.
A settlement will be made and this will all go away. I do hope he has taken this opportunity to reflect on the way he has chosen to make a living and the people he has hurt along the way in the name of humor. It is time to move on.

83. Lost my posting, hope this doesn't duplicate.

For really interesting stuff on Sharpton and Jackson get these books. Bernard Goldberg's "110 People Who Are Screwing Up America". It has stunning details on the other 108 too.

"Enough" by Juan Williams (an African American).

Go to Larry Elder's website (it's his name) and all his books are great.

I'd also recommend Michelle Malkin's "Invasion" and Pat Buchanan's "State of Emergency". Both on the illegal alien situation and they will both make your hair stand on end.

You can get all these books at your local library.

86. Ok, most of you people don't understand business. I'll make this short so you don't explode... CBS and Imus both got what they wanted. CBS made millions off of selling ad space around his mouth. Imus made millions being a lazy-minded jackass on the air. Imus put advertisers in a bad position, which forced CBS to fire him because CBS makes money off of advertising and nothing else. They also both got what they asked for - a jackass got fired, and a greedy media company will have to pay out some of the money they made off their jackass. If what I just wrote doesn't make sense to you, keep shopping at Wal-Mart while thinking you're buying American.

89. While i dont uphold what Don Imus said. They should never have fired him over it and i think that now that Al Sharpton and Jessy Jackson have moved on to their next big thing I think CBS has to realize what they have lost. Its just not the same on Msnbc. I for one have gone to Cnn.....Its a shame all the other people that were put out of work....

90. CBS knew exactly what they were getting with IMUS. You are right #15 - the junk they attempted to replace IMUS with is pathetic! IMUS should start his own "IMUS in the Morning" streaming telecast on his IMUS website - I'm sure he will get the following!
