Hasselhoff Gives His Story

David HasselhoffDavid Hasselhoff has issued the following statement to TMZ in the wake of the leaked videotape that showed him visibly intoxicated.

"More than a year ago, I made a difficult decision, for the sake of our children and myself, to file for divorce. To this day, my ex-wife has engaged in conduct designed to punish me by repeatedly publishing false statements to the press. Despite her fabricated claims, I have, from the outset of this painful divorce, consistently taken the high road by not responding to the myriad of false allegations made against me by her out of consideration for our children. I recognize that public discussion of the issues which exist between us is not something which is in the best interests of our daughters.

But recent events have made it impossible for me to continue to remain silent. My ex-wife, and her latest attorney (who seems to share a thirst for publicity) recently suggested that I had not only been physically abusive to her, but that I was also physically abusive towards our two daughters, as well. This latest claim is not only utterly false, but it is also obscene. Our daughters are outraged by the falsity of their mother's claims and urged me to allow them to go to the press to challenge these claims. I discouraged our daughters from doing so, but I agreed that I would finally come forward and challenge these absurd claims made by their mother.

My ex-wife's actions are nothing more than a transparent attempt to garner attention from the media and to hurt me. Her claims that I ever physically abused her or our children are ludicrous. It is inexcusable that my ex-wife has perpetuated these false claims against me, without consideration for the toll her actions have taken on the girls. However, it is clear that she will resort to any means to obtain the attention of the media in order to satisfy her own perverse need for publicity, regardless of its impact on our daughters or me.

The lack of veracity of her claims have, and will continue to be borne out in the marital litigation. Unfortunately, our children have been subjected to physical and emotional abuse on numerous occasions, but it has been at the hands of their own mother, which abuse has been documented by the Court appointed experts in our marital proceedings.

"... my ex-wife has refused to deal with her own issues ..."

While I acknowledge that I am a recovering alcoholic who must deal with my own issue on a daily basis, my ex-wife has refused to deal with her own issues, which include having tested positive for alcohol and illegal substances in response to court ordered testing. Although she has publicly denied having tested positive, proof of her drug use is part of the Court record.

I truly hope that my ex-wife will get the help that she so desperately needs for her own sake and for the sake of our children, and that in the future she will refrain from perpetuating falsehoods and selfishly compromising the well-being of our children so that they can move forward with their lives, with their privacy respected. I look forward to the day that our marital litigation is behind me, so that our children and I can move forward with our lives in peace."

UPDATE: Debra Opri just issued the following statement on behalf of her client Pamela Bach-Hasselhoff:

"Although Mr. Hasselhoff has publicly admitted the truthfulness and authenticity of a video showing him severely intoxicated in the presence of his minor daughter while she was in his custody, his private conduct behind the scenes continues to be deplorable in that he refuses to accept responsibility for his actions by transferring blame to his ex-wife. This is the behavior of a man in denial who arrogantly spins his explanations to the media in an attempt to save face. The spinning is over.

"While his continuing abuse of alcohol violates court orders, more importantly it is harming their children's lives in what has become an all out 'hate fest' by Mr. Hasselhoff against his ex-wife."

76. As a female attorney, Debra Opri should be ashamed of herself for going to the tabloids to air the dirty laundry of her client's and their families--it makes her look really bad! Although I supported her client, Larry Birkhead, I found her behavior in Florida (inside the court room) and in California (outside the court room) to be despicable.

The video of David Hasselhoff is just sickening and makes me feel badly for himself and his daughters. Whoever released this video tape to the public -- Pamela Bach or Debra Opri -- should be penalized by the Courts on behalf of these under-age daughters. Since this has now been aired, may David Hasselhoff attract the attention of a superior professional therapist who can lead him out of the wilderness and into a long-term program for dealing with this disease.

Where does self-respect begin with these women who release audio and video tapes to sway public opinion on behalf of court cases and bring down the careers of these men who have supported their lavish lifestyles throughout the years?

Pamela Bach needs more than ALANON--she needs to be in a serious psychotherapy program herself. I suspect she will, ultimately, regret that she ever got involved with Debra Opri!

78. Bingo poster # 81. I couldn't agree with you more.

The first thing any divorce lawyer asks a client is " Do you have any dirt against your spouse that we can use as ammo against them?" And, do you have witnesses and documented evidence?

Opri's eyes must have lit up like a Christmas tree when she told Hasselhoff's a recovering alcolohic. And, she must have been salivating like a rat in a cheese factory when Hasselhoff's ex told her about the video. No regard for the consquences like the tow teen girls....purely for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and wearing the opponent down

Video was released with the sole intention of discrediting Hasselhoff in not only the courts, but in the vote of public opinion. Shameless, tactless, but totally legal.

I feel for the man, for divorces can be so mentally, physically, and financially draining. And, man o man the stress must be even triple when a celeb in view of the whole world.

79. I would like to know how many times Debra Opri has pulled this kind of stunt. Does she always encourage her clients to increase their public attack on their spouse. I think she is despicable, she uses the media to further her own career. David Hasselhoff has acknowledged his alcoholism and has been in treatment, This tape was made at his request but was never meant to be made public.

80. He's a washed up ham starved for any kind of publicity. Maybe Oprah will take pity on him and book him.

81. I've met David Hasselhoff. He's a real gentleman and very friendly. I never knew that he had a drinking problem, cause I never saw him drunk.

82. Hmmm! That's funny when I watched the video of his Ex talking about David she didn't say that he was Physically abusive, she said It may have turned Physical If it were not for a restraining order. He needs to look at himself get it together, stop pointing his finger at her. she may add to his problems. but she didn't make him an alcoholic! He's the one who needs to deal with his issues.

87. Oohh, Mr. Baldwin. You left those words for your daughter on the answering machine. How her little heart must hurt having Daddy say that to her. Curb yourself and Never spew harm again.....

88. Who cares how the tape was leaked. Why would his brat of a daughter do something like that to her own father? And why would he be so negligent while she's in his care? That whole family is completely screwed up!

89. The airing of this video on national tv may not have been his original intention, but I thank him for asking his daughter to make it. It has opened my eyes as to who I am and what I have lost because of this disease.

90. As usual I'm sure both parties are guilty of what they are saying about the other - and the sad fact is the kids are put in the middle. While they both spout how the other is dragging the kids in the middle - they both are. It's always bad during divorce because to make it seem like they HAD to divorce - the mud slinging begins and all secrets in the closet come out.....thank goodness their kids are teens I guess....atleast they are old enough to know the difference.
