Sharpton: I've Said the N-Word, But I'm No Imus

Al SharptonReverend Al Sharpton admits that he has dropped some offensive slurs in the past, but claims that a comparison with Don Imus is "completely unfair."

In an exclusive interview with TMZ, The Rev admitted that calling his good friend and former New York Mayor David Dinkins a "n----r whore" several years ago was wrong ... but added, "If I say something wrong on the air, I should lose my radio show."

Even after Imus apologized for calling the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy headed hos," Sharpton still called for him to be canned from MSNBC radio gig. When TMZ asked The Rev why he shouldn't have been fired from his job after dropping the N-bomb, Sharpton replied, "He's done this over and over and over again and has suffered nothing -- not even suspended. To compare any of us is an unfair comparison." Sharpton added, "I was wrong and others are wrong ... but this isn't the first time I've spoken up against it, I also marched after "Barbershop."

Sharpton also claims that he has never referred to the Jewish community as "diamond merchants," despite several published reports to the contrary. "That was never said ... but it's interesting that years after it allegedly happened, conservatives brought this up. This is a political attack." Sharpton added, "I have worked hard to establish an open dialogue with the Jewish community, and in fact, I was invited as a guest to Israel in 2002."

34. Sharpton is a bigot. I watched some of the news shows after Imus got fired. It was the same old thing. People who came on in his behalf, some of them went back to the same old story. Slavery. One even brought up George Washington, whatever that means. There is a double standard. Ever hear of a white college? I read the media is afraid of them. (Jackson & Sharpton)

36. Mr. Sharpton. Will TMZ PLEASE do their homework and tell me and others where Mr. Sharpton went to theology school? I know he dropped out of college, but I can't find any records of any kind to confirm that this charlatan is a minister. I've known many ministers in my day, including my own father, and they went to school for a long time! What school did Mr. Sharpton attend??? Or did someone just nickname him "Rev?"

37. Reverend Al Sharpton????? WTF.....Exactly what church do you preach at? Ummm...how much money do you make every year being a hypocrite, a biggot, a racist, a liar, a con, a freakin crybaby and over all, just the scum of the earth. You and Jesse Jackson...we'll just call you Jesse Sharpton, how about that??? After all, you both are basically the same person. You both should be locked up for good. You helped a black woman lie that a white man raped her. You have many many many times made comments, let's call them racist comments since you are so fond of the term, about white people. You spread racism but it's reverse racism. You both suck!!!!

42. Sharpton is a PROFESSIONAL racist. He makes his living off of promoting any trace or hint or racism. Oddly, he is not an equall opportunity racism opposer; he seems to think that racism is exclusively a european-american trait and behavior, and does not come to terms with his own racist speechs and attitudes.

43. I've got it! Why don't we set up a "N-word credit trading" system, and let everyone become "N-word neutral" like we do with "carbon credits?" You know, say the N-word (whichever one) and then go on a some bogus "march" against the N word and cancel it out? What say you Al?

44. Al Sharpton (and Jesse too, for that matter) is only relevant because we make him relevant. As a matter of fact I think white people are more obessed with these two than the rank and file black person. Al is not an elected official. Whatever he is should have "self-proclaimed" in front of it. Race is such a complex issue in this country that no one person or organization or point of view can fully represent black views or white views. Stop running to Al for a quote. Stop putting him on the talk shows. Stop holding up his personal views as the "black"point of view collectively. Stop paying attention to him, period. Al is a hypocrite but guess what, so are all of us. We all have predjudices and biases and stereotypical views. We have all uttered racist or sexist or homophobic words in our private circles with our trusted, like-minded friends. Or at the very least have stood by silently and allowed it to happen. So while Al is an utter disgrace, hypocrite, race baiter, P.O.S. or whatever and deserves to be called out, ask yourself, what have I done to counteract his effect? You can say whatever you want about Sharpton and Jackson but they will literally "take it to the street" while the rest of us sit around and just talk (or post). They know how to play the media game and we fall for it every time. They fill the vaccuum our indifference/laziness/lack of interest creates. Rhetoric is not activism people. Wake up!

45. Al Sharpton is not a crusader for African American rights. He is a money grubbing, media craving, HYPOCRITE that will do anything to get his face on the television. He and Jesse Jackson are setting Racial Equality back, by continuing to act like this.
