Is Broadway the "American Idol" Graveyard?

The Great White Way is riddled with the discarded musical corpses of former "American Idol" wannabeens of yore.
Anthony Federov, Fantasia Barrino, Diana Degarmo, Frenchie Davis, Constatine Maroulis, Tamyra Gray
As of May 29, Season One finalist Tamyra Gray will join the cast of "Rent" (she previously starred in "Bombay Dreams"), and simultaneously, rejoins the club of former "A.I." contestants who have been making ends meet on Broadway. It's not a J.Hud Oscar but it beats the late shift at Applebees!

Other contest losers trading Hollywood dollar bills for Playbills include: Season Two's impeached diva Frenchie Davis, who has been performing in "Rent" off and on for four years, Season Four's creepy crooner Constantine Maroulis, who hammed it up in "The Wedding Singer" last year, and Anthony Federov (memba him?), who just this month joined the revival of long-time hit, "The Fantasticks." While Diana Degarmo, who came in second on Season Three, took a break from her soccer-mom 'do and non-existent record sales to don a beehive in "Hairspray."

Even Fanatasia Barrino, who actually won "Idol" and at one time sold millions of records, has hit the NYC stage. To her defense, Miss B. has been getting rave reviews and selling out the house as Miss Celie in Oprah's production of "The Color Purple."

So while America may have become immune to the McPheever ("Over It," anyone?), you never know, she may just turn up on Broadway -- in "Kats."

16. #6 - You don't have to bash LA to make a point. I live in LA and I agree with your point about Broadway. I love NYC and when ever I got to visit my best friend there, we always make sure to see at least one show.

Broadway shows are the best entertainment in the world if you ask me.

You don't have to be such an ass to try and make a point.

18. I guess the writers of TMZ are too busy with their heads up the asses of the Britney's of the world to get out and see "Wicked" here in L.A. I starting to think TMZ writers are a bunch of 14 year old girls.

I saw "Wicked" last weekend was amazing. THAT is real entertainment and talent.

If Broadway is a grave yard ... we should all be so luck to drop dead there!

19. #12 Reality Check. You can kiss my big fat white a s s. You do not know what you are talking about. And in my day, I would have blinded Simon with my good body. Doesn't matter, I will still get there. Someday Simon will meet me and fall in love.

I love you Simon Cowell. You are hot.

21. Keep wishing #7 Kelly Clarkson is already #1 on some charts with that song and debuted in the Top 10 of Billboard with it. Washed up? lol, I don't think so... but maybe she'll give YOU a shout out when she's collecting a few more Grammys next year. ON TO other things... mad props to the peep from Idol who head to Broadway. If you can work doing what you love, that's all that counts. Success isn't always having your face on every magazine... success is having a showcase for your talents and making a living at it.

23. You guys are missing the point of the article. Its not to bash Broadway, its saying that after appearing on IDOL these kids arent selling records etc... so they are turning to the only place that will have them. More of a dig at IDOL than anything. The show was supposed to launch music careers and besides Clarkson and Underwood, all have failed to live up to the hype.

24. Fanatasia Barrino will NEVER (ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER) have ANY class!!!!! She's not even (((good))) enough for Broadway. More like, off-off-Broadway.

Yeah. That's where all those runners-up and winner DESERVE to go; off-Broadway. No better.

25. Better Broadway than jail.

26. Hey TMZ, you are acting as if live theater is a bad thing. On the contrary. These people have to show up and do their stuff LIVE every night. There is no editing. No cameras to cut to a commercial. It's LIVE baby! You have to bring your game every time you walk in the stage door.

27. I'm so with all the girls who love Simon Cowell. He is uber sexy, so hot. Love his smile, his eyes his body. He is to die for. And I love that he loves his Mum. So sweet. Simon...I love you. I will be with you. We don't have to have babies cause I know you don't want any. We can just chill with a cocktail in your pad. Maybe skinny dip too. That would be cool. I need cooling off being around you. You are so HOT. BTW, my grandparents were born in England...if that helps. Calll me...867=5309.

28. So Broadway is a GRAVEYARD for artists??? Wow, I know lots of actors who would give their right arm to be in such a graveyard!

29. Performing your art for the public is a dream of a lifetime whatever the venue. When you land on Broadway you have ARRIVED! Broadway is not a step down but a fantastic step up for any young performer. It's up to the public to purchase the records of the American Idol finalists. Not everybody watches American Idol and sometimes the first albums are not so good. People will buy their albums if they are good. A Broadway gig is the ultimate. Performing in front of an audience will get you noticed and if you are good and they like you they will buy your albums. It's that simple.

30. wow! I didn't realize Broadway was such a hellhole. And to think, some actors train their entire lives to get there. What a waste! it just goes to show, if Paris Hiton hasn't done it, TMZ doesn't care!

get some culture, idiots.
