Celebrity Justice
*NSYNC *NCOURT Over Song

Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass and the rest of the boys from *NSYNC, along with their label Jive Records, are being blasted over a hit song from the past that they allegedly ripped off -- and the dispute could cost 'em more than $10 million bucks.

In a lawsuit filed yesterday in a Las Vegas Federal Court, a musician named Troy Alexander (aka "Royal T") claims he met with Jive records in 1990 and introduced them to his demo tape of the song "Up Against the Wall." According to documents, JIVE signed *NSYNC a few years later, who then released a song "substantially similar" to Alexander's work in 2001. The song in question featured the same title and was featured on the smash album "Celebrity." The boys also performed the song on their "PopOdyssey" tour.

According to Troy's attorneys at Callister and Reynolds, the similarities are much more of a "battle of written lyrics," as opposed to sound.

A rep for Jive told TMZ that they were not aware of the claim and had not been served with any papers.

47. TO "G".. Do you know what illiterate means? If you know what it means you do know YOU and the rest of these Nsync fans that say these songs are nothing alike fall under that catogory because they can't READ, You do realize that dont you???

If you think this case is based on just the words girl, move, feeling or place..THAN YOU OBVIOUSLY ARE THE ONE ILLITERATE, READ THE LYRICS SHEETS OR AT LEAST TRY, FIGHT ILLITERACY!

If you think any laywer would take a copyright infringement case based on single words, than YOU have a SERIOUS BRAIN DEFICENCY to makes things worst! IF THATS NOT THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK I DONT KNOW WHAT IS LOL..

YOUR MAKING YOURSELF LOOK REAL STUPID DUDE SO I THOUGHT ID HELP YOU OUT, HERES A BIT OF ADVICE FOR YOUR NSYNC PAIN...

TAKE 2 ASPRINS AND HATE SOME MORE IN THE MORNING!!!!! BYE BYE BYE

48. This is so stupid. So what the lyrcs have some of the same words in it. The songs are not the same. I think this jackass hates Nsync and that's why he is accusing them of stealing his song. I think he wants attention and needs some money. I don't see him winning this case.

Why the hell did he wait all this time? Well, if he thinks he has a case, than he is wrong. Some singers happen to have the same song titles but the lyrics are different. Does that mean that since two singers have the same song title that one of the singers stole the song. I don't think so.

49. this is ridiculous. Nsync didnt steal Royal T's song. The songs are COMPLETELY different. Just because two songs have some of the same words throughout does NOT mean that one artist stole lyrics. The words that each song has in common are words that you can find in any song! The words Dance, Girl, Ball, Feeling, Place, can be found anywhere. I think this is just a waste of time and effort just to try and get money off of another group who became famous and did well. Royal T's song is about getting arrested and about cops. Nsyncs song is about dancing in a club and meeting a girl.. how is that the same thing!??

50. The songs surely have alot of the same words and lines when you click view documents. The stories are different but that has nothing to do with infringing on a persons copyrighted Lyrics. and using the same title, thats a lil nervy lol. They prob thought this guy would never know. Alot of people here keep saying the stories are different i agree but the meaning is still the same putting someone up agasint the wall, how many records talk about putting someone up agaisnt a wall. I read about some copyright infringment cases they said u can not copyright a title but if the title is the bases of the song, and u take it and use it as the bases of ur song, its infringement, if its the core of the song, which they both are.. What I noticed with these big artists they take peoples stuff and hope they dont find out and if they do they go ahead and pay them. Looks like thats one of those cases. I think Mr Alexander is about to have a big pay day if those are the real lyirc sheets if he can show he has a copyright and they had access to it, this is nothing new im not the least bit surpised.

51. This is why so many artists think it's okay to steal songs and get away with it. Just because you are a fan of Nsync does'nt mean you have to justify when they are wrong. This is not the first time someone has sued them over lyrics or the whole song with music. There must be something to these lawsuits especially when the songs are copyrighted and they have proof that shows that they sent the material to the record company as well as had a meeting with the excutives about the song and then to hear them singing that very song you presented. Of course they altered the lyrics a bit to fit their genre, but the fact still remain that Royal T presented them witht the song "Up against the Wall" and a few years later heard his song playing all over the world. I think anyone would do the same thing if they were in his position. Just as the others who are suing Nsync for stealing their songs too. and when more than one person is suing for the same reason then it's really suspicious and seem like they really are stealing because they feel they can get away with it because of their status. As we already notice,..so many celebrities do get away with what the average public get punished for. Maybe it's time for them to realize that they are'nt above the law. It's Royal T today and could be any one of us tomorrow.
GO ROYAL T and I respect you for taking a stand amongst all these sharks out here who are celebrity worshippers.
go ahead and shoot your arrows at me but i don't care..i'm only stating my opinion just like everyone else on this board.

52. I READ BOTH VERSIONS OF THE SONG 'UP AGAINST THE WALL..'..THEY BOTH READ LIKE GRADE 6 ..MATERIAL..STRICTLY ..ELEMENTARY.. I WOULDN'T WANT 2 BE CREDITED FOR EITHER VERSION... BUT HEY .. WHO AM I... TO JUDGE..THE NAME ROYAL T SUCKS!!!..AND EVERYONE IN THE GROUP 'NSYNC'..WELL WE KNOW THEY SUCK.. !!! ..THIS PERSON MR.ALEXANDER OBVIOUSLY THINKS HE HAS A CASE..AND SO MUST HIS LAWYERS...HOPE THERE RIGHT!!! AND IT'S A GOOD THING HE HAS ALOT OF TIME ON HIS HANDS AS I PREDICT.THIS WILL BE DRUG OUT..FOR SOME TIME TO COME.... IT WOULD'NT BE THE FIRST TIME ..'NSYNC'..HAS BEEN SUED ..PROBABLY WON'T BE THE LAST... HEY .. WHAT'S ROYAL T DO ANYWAY ..IS HE ALREADY A RAPPER..WAS HE EVER ONE..ALL I KNOW.. BY COMPARING THESE SONGS... IVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE 90'S WERE SOME MESSED UP!!!!.. ..AND UP AGAINST THE WALL IS A UNIVERSALKNOWN SAYIN..' BY THE DAMN POLICE FORCE!!! MAYBE THEY OUTTA BE SUING ..AS WELL!!! LOL

Posted at 11:41PM on May 10th 2007 by anyone think acouple of these comments are being made by the plaintiff!!!!!!!!

53. I do not see anything similar in the songs. What is up with people these days? Are they just money hungry or what?

54. FOR ALL THE COMMENTS & THE COMMENTS ON THE COMMENTS - DIFFERENCE OF OPINIONS ARE THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. THAT'S WHY WE HAVE DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS & ANY OTHER POLITICAL GROUP THAT HAS A DIFFERENT VIEW. SO LETS TAKE THIS CASE FOR WHAT IT IS - A RAPPER IS SUING NSYNC & JIVE RECORDS FOR COPYRIGHT INFRINGMENT. WHAT TROY ALEXANDER BELIEVES IS SO STRONG HE'S TAKING IT TO COURT. RIGHT OR WRONG. THAT'S HIS PEROGATIVE.
NOW LET'S STOP ALL THIS HOSTILITY AND JUST SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE SHOW. YOU WON'T HAVE TO PAY - NOT EVEN THE COST OF A CD - THIS IS FREE FOR YOU & ME.
WHEN THE JUDGE SAYS : WILL THE WRITER OF "UP AGAINST THE WALL" - PLEASE STAND.!!! DON'T BE SURPRISED WHEN TROY ALEXANDER AKA ROYAL T - STANDS.

55. Royal T's lyrics seem more like the lyrics to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air's theme song. This guy is an idiot

56. This guy obviously feels that he has a legitimate ccomplaint, and regardless of whether or not this is actually the case, I wish both parties the best of luck. Whether or not anyone was wronged is up to the court to decide, so more power to whichever side can present their case better.

Personally, I don't think that there is much merit to the argument. The songs are similar and they share the same title. However looking at my iPod alone, I have two different songs called "Friday Night" about going out and partying on a Friday, two different songs called "Gone" about a breakup, two different songs called "Hold On" about moving on with your life when things get hard. Do we see a pattern here? As I said above, if the case presented is legitimate, I hope that he presents it well and gets what he deserves. But honestly, there is very little originality left in music today.

57. i'm pretty sure that even if this song was derived from "Royal T's" that the blame over plagarism lies with Jive Records not with *NSYNC. I'm pretty sure they had and up til now didn't have any idea who the guy was and would have no way to steal his song. The two songs anyways are just barelly similar.

58. OMG! are you freakin serious? that dude must be really broke to grasp at straws like that. The songs are in no way similar. A blind and deaf man can see and hear that. That guy is just looking for a way to get his name in the paper b/c his career hasn't taken off like he wanted it to.

59. people are so stupid
who cares first of all
hes just trying to make money
so hes trying to say because there happeneds to be a few of the same words in a paragraph and that means its the same? hes prolly mad cuz his song sucked ass

Posted at 3:06PM on May 11th 2007 by jaebabix

60. First off, the people who make fun of others for being stupid and can't even spell really need to hop back into their elementary english class, DAMN. Secondly, how long has this song been out and this guy has done NOTHING. The judge should throw this claim out based on that point alone. There is no connection between these two songs other than the fact that they have bad lyrics. Sure it happens, but the only thing these songs share is a title. This is a ludicrous lawsuit with no basis or grounds, and for them to have their day in court is a waste of taxpayer money. If this guy truly wrote this song he would have done something about it a long time ago. You know, like when N'Sync was actually popular 5 years ago. This is like when girls claim rape, just because their boyfriends dumped them.
