HBO Cancels Albrecht

In the wake of his Las Vegas arrest this past weekend, HBO has decided to cut ties with Chairman and CEO, Chris Albrecht.

In a statement obtained by TMZ, Time Warner Chairman and CEO Richard D. Parsons said:

"Jeff Bewkes (President and COO of Time Warner) and I believe that this is the right decision for the Company. We thank Chris for all of his contributions to Home Box Office over the years."

Albrecht, who had been with HBO for 22 years, says that he "agreed to step down ... recognizing that I cannot allow my personal circumstances to distract them from the business."

HBO Chief Operating Officer Bill Nelson will temporarily take over Albrecht's duties until a new CEO is appointed.

Albrecht was arrested over the weekend for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend outside the MGM Grand Casino after the prizefight between Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Yesterday, Albrecht sent a letter to the HBO staff, which stated that he was "deeply sorry" for the Vegas incident, and revealed that he is a recovering alcoholic who had slipped.

32. This is the second time he had a physical altercation with a female in public. The first one was with an employee at HBO, who he was having an affair with(both were married). If I remember he choked her and pushed her to the ground in the office. She quitely settled with HBO for $400,000. It ruined her marriage and his. So the pattern is there. That was back in the 90's when this stuff was quickly swept under the rug. Nowadays in the sue happy corporate world we live in, you don't get a third chance.

34.
Ya know...TMZ....the word "allegedly" does not belong in this story....There is no question that he assaulted the girlfriend...it was witnessed by a lot of people...even the police.
I'm sure that your use of the word is a CYA kind of thing...but, it's not accurate...
Are your writers alleged journalists? How about printing the truth...and stop kissing ass.

The alleged "men" who say that she must have deserved it, need to grow some.
Real men do not hit women.

35. Thank God this CEO did the right thing and resigned......he was influencing what the programming was on HBO and betwee him and the HBO boxing commmentator, Jim Lamplely, it was clear he was on a tinge towards abusive towards women

Thank you Time Warner for doing the right thing here. Lord knows if he would abuse a woman in public what he would do to her in private.

So sad a man of this stature would take a fall, but if he is abusive to women, I would imagine he is abusive to staff member and all other who report to him. We dont need another "Enron" like gone wild with power ego maniac in charge ego centric maniac,...it has to affect the programming.

Bravo Time Warner...You have stepped up and taken Corporate Responsbility when it comes to doing the right thing

Now take a closer look please at that fellow woman abuser Jim Lampley. They are tow peas in a pod and its time to cut the cord with this abuser as well.

36. Sounds like the guy is a few inches from hitting bottom. I'm sure there is a lot we will not hear about prior to the Vegas incident and he did resign, He was not fired. 38. Ok Mr Bil Nelson, are you going to step up and put a stop to the HBO funded and supported abusiveness towards women in your Comedy Acts, and Prime Time Shows that depict Women in degrating roles?

I've had enough of your insutls from your Comedic Acts and Soprano Like shows that demean Women to nothing more than sex object and targets of abusive.

Are you going to step up and take a stand to put a stop to this nonsense and violence towards Women? Or are you going futher capitalize upon taking a shot and and a sexual tinge towards Women?

Be a Man Sir and do the right thing...We're sick of the Don Imus type crap HBO is putting out these past years....Time for a Change Sir...You Man enough to do it?

Disgusting

39. Hey Real Sports on HBO with Bryant Gumel and Bernie Goldberg? Are you going to do a feature on how Women are abused by HBO management? Sports Boxing guy, Jim Lampley and your CEO Albrecht? I'd love an expose on yourselves you hippocrittes. You're the first to go after any other venue that preaches such a disparity between Leadership and the Facts, and the Last to do an expoxse on your own.

Lampley is a womanziing gf beater and your CEO is the same...how about a nice story on your own sorry ass people for the Real Truth? Bet Goldberg could even include it in his new Book about the FAR Left and Wimpy Right.

You two faced no count not going to report on your own phonies,

40. It's about time. What about Tom Hanks' partner's comment, though, that "he stood behind Albrecht and believes the exec is too crucial to HBO's success to be allowed to leave"? Yes, VARIETY reported this from Gary Goetzman, Hanks' partner in Playtone, in a 5/9 story on p. 1.

41. WELL, WELL, WELL
NOW I KNOW WHY HBO DENIGRATES WOMEN BY PUTTING THEM IN SUBMISSIVE ROLES AND MAKING THEM LOOK LIKE THEY CANNOT FUNCTION WITHOUT A MAN.

HBO HAS REALLY GONE TO THE DOGS!

I SAY, LET'S MAKE A SPECIAL ALLOWING HOW THE CEO SURVIVED JAIL TIME
NOW, THAT WOULD REALLY BE ENTERTAINING!

Posted at 2:58AM on May 10th 2007 by HAPPY THE CEO IS GOING' DOWN TO CHINATOWN!

42. Wow! An amazing number of 'gentlemen' weighing in here. Keep in mind that these neanderthals condoning any violence against women do not speak for our entire gender.

Actually everyone that was speculating that there must be more to the story are right. It's being reported that Albrecht had a another physical altercation with another girlfriend (read 'affair' this time) back in 1991. She was apparently a Senior VP at an HBO division where he was President. The report I read said he knocked her to the ground when she said she was going to be dating someone else. She then reported the altercation to HBO CEO and quietly settled for $400k. That's why HBO is giving him the boot....they don't want him costing them any more $$$ in lawsuits.
