Ass-emblywoman Misses Point in Gibson Case

Julia BrownleyMel Gibson had his rights violated after his DUI arrest and big, bad TMZ is responsible, according to California State Assemblywoman Julia Brownley. Brownley seems to think TMZ may have actually bribed someone to get the critical pages of the arrest report detailing Gibson's anti-Semitic tirade. Well, Brownley is an idiot.

The Assemblywoman, inspired by TMZ's Gibson story, introduced a bill which was unanimously passed by the State Assembly, prohibiting the exchange of money or other compensation for information in criminal investigations. Here's the problem, Julia: TMZ didn't pay squat.

Brownley said, "Mel Gibson was one of those cases where information was given out before his due process was executed." Huh? You may recall, L.A. County Sheriff's officials lied to TMZ and other media the entire day following the arrest, claiming it occurred "without incident." Officials ordered the arresting deputy to rewrite his report, eliminating all references to "f**king Jews" and other bad behavior.

So why is Brownley wasting taxpayers' money by pushing a bill with a totally faulty premise? Why isn't she interested in the fact that Sheriff's officials lied to the people they serve and manipulated evidence? How's this for a theory -- she represents the district in which Gibson and other celebs live. We're guessing Brownley is banking on a big celebrity turnout at her next fundraiser. We're just sayin'...

18. I'm not sure I agree Mel's rights were violated... but I do agree that the media should not publish public documents related to criminal investigations until there has been a trial... or at least due process. Furthermore.... I think Mel Gibson's CRIME was to be driving under the influence, which is why he was pulled over. So, yes, his anti-semitic remarks were irrelevant (whether TMZ likes it or not) to the crime he committed and should not have been included in the arresting officer's report. Whenever I included information on my paperwork that was irrelevant to my investigation (non-police related), my boss made me re-write it too, mostly because it distracts from the real issue or point of the investigation.

Being an anti-semite is not a good thing, but it's not a crime... driving under the influence IS. I'm APPALLED that TMZ.com chooses to make a bigger deal out of Gibson's remarks than to the fact that he could have KILLED SOMEONE BY DRINKING AND DRIVING! Maybe if TMZ decided to bring attention to how wrong it is to potentially endanger the lives of everyone you're sharing the road with it might help celebrities (or non-celebrities) think twice about getting behind the wheel completely plastered, which seems to be an epidemic recently...

20. This time you've gone too far, TMZ & Harvey Levin. You've just dragged the process of civil discourse into the gutter, and should be ashamed of yourself. Who are you, Harvey Levin, to call an elected official a MORON & and IDIOT? Controlling a news reporting service like TMZ should mean you act with restraint & common sense, not like a schoolyard child throwing a hissy fit. Disagree with her if you want, state why you believe she is wrong, but leave the sarcasm & name calling behind; what kind of lesson do you send to young kids when you purposely & publically insult & belittle our elected officials? It sounds like TMZ is no longer interested in reporting the "news"; now it wants to make it. Shame, Harvey Levin & TMZ, Shame!

21. Its about time.

Just because someone who works for a PD and are not happy with the way things are working out.. does not say that they can just pass on private information that is part of a case.

Free or Paid... TMZ should not have received the information.
