Clive's Speech

Ain't Music to Kelly's Ears

5/24/2007 8:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

After Clive Davis' very public display of rejection toward pop superstar Kelly Clarkson (via a speech that canonized Saint Carrie Underwood) on last night's "American Idol" finale, sources tell TMZ that SONY/BMG execs were apologizing to members of Clarkson's camp for their label head's rude behavior.

The 75-year-old owlish music mogul was tasked with speaking to the huge TV audience about the health of the "A.I" franchise and appeared to go out of his way to avoid mentioning Kelly's new single "Never Again" (which reached the Top 10 for heaven's sake!) or her forthcoming CD, "My December." Yet he somehow managed to find time to plug both Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee's new singles! Clive did briefly allude to two-time Grammy winner Clarkson -- but only to praise the talents of outside songwriters working with "Idols." Ouch!

Sources backstage at the finale report that Sony/BMG execs attempted to apologize to Kelly's team -- but their backtracking on behalf of the man with the golden ears fell on deaf ears. A well-placed source told TMZ, "Clive's actions, both delaying the album, and now this, tell you everything you need to know about how he feels about Kelly." That's no way to treat a 15-million-album-selling lady!

As TMZ reported
, the contentious feud erupted between honcho Davis and Kelly after she refused to make the "significant changes" to her new album (for which she wrote or co-wrote every song) -- that Clive demanded.

Artistic integrity - 1, The Man - 0!

A rep for Clive Davis told TMZ, "There is no truth to this story whatsoever. The focus of Clive's speech was on the recent Idol successes."

TMZ is lame

Screw Clive. The music industry, as most people in the biz know, is ethically challenged, known for execs who rip off artists, fail to pay appropriate royalties (thats the reason the music biz is so concerned with online stores like iTunes, because they can no longer cook the books) etc. Artistic integrity is everything and if Clive thinks he is the greatest think tank for what is good business why was he slammed with tax evasion issues some years ago? Kelly should listen to herself and a manager she can trust, keep an eye on her own money, negotiate contracts that enrich her justly, compared to these record slimebags and keep on moving forward.

What a disrespectful ass Clive is.

I can't believe your report failed to mention that Clive blatantly remained seated when Kelly got a standing ovation for her "Never Again" performance. What is this guy? Eight?

Kelly Clarkson is incredible and easily one of the best things in the music industry today. Even Simon Cowell, who was at odds with Kelly at one time, said in the EW interview how Idol was lucky to have Kelly and not the other way around. Kelly Clarkson is a true artist, true talent, true star and will be around for 30 years.

Kelly sticks to her guns and is standing behind her album. She wants a success but knows the main point is to make good music that she can be proud of 10, 20, and 30 years from now. "My December" is going to be that.

Clive sucks up to Underwood because she probably will do whatever is told of her like a blonde ditz without a backbone. Plus, Clive believes in people like crackhead Whitney Houston. The fossil might have known something about music 20 years ago but he clearly knows nothing now. Clive wants Kelly to abondon her own image, style, and direction of music to rehash Lindsay Lohan songs. Enough said about this clown.

This is a tough one, I think Kelly Clarkson is very talented, but Clive Davis has decades of knowledge and I know you who are young think that's mean nothing. But one day you to will be old and If your kids look at you and tell you man you are too old to tell me anything then you'll understand. I feel in this situation is they are both right and wrong. Kelly wants wants some independence and that's understandable, but Clive has made stars out of quite a few people including her!!!

I was waiting for Clive to say something, it took longer then I thought. From what I hear around he is a Man Diva, if you know what I mean. Sometimes the people who run the business should listen to the artist. They are the artist. Kelly was brave for doing that, any other times, she could maybe have been blackballed. Lets hope that won't happen! BE THE ADULT CLIVE, LET IT GO MAN.

the guy should retire...his focus on bubblegum pop, and sappy ballads has done more harm to the music biz then illegal downloads...not to metion using the same lame ass song writers over and over

he doesnt look for true talent..he looks for puppets

If the guy did this, what an ass. if hes dumb enough to argue with success, maybe he isnt as good at this business as some people seem to think.

I feel that Clive's comments were ill-timed... (even the judges looked stunned at some of what he was saying...) I remember sitting there thinking that someone reallly needed to stop the words coming out of his mouth. I felt that he was not only rude to Kelly, but also to Taylor and Katherine as well. I know that Clive IS well respected in the industry, but really felt that he was out of line last night... ( also out of line was that big, yellow bird woman, but what the h#ll...!) Carrie had the grace, when being presented with whatever that award was, to at least say... "let's get back to the show..!" I felt uncomfortable for her, as well... how awkward to accept an award from someone who just slapped most of the other former Idol winners upside the head.....

Anyway... just really felt that was ill timed and ill said.... and Clive should have known better....

Glad she is sticking up for herself and recognizing her own clout. The problem with winning American Idol is that there is no negotiating the deal once you actuallywin...the terms of the contract are spelled-out before one gets accepted to be on the show. It's a "take it or leave it" deal. Some contestants have actually dropped out on their own after they realize how much the terms of the contract are not in their own favor at all. Clarkson has the clout to tell them the way she wants it to be now. f-clive.

Clives an ASS! Kelly Clarkson wrote 3 of her #1 songs and single handedly made RCA the biggest selling record company in 2005. Oh, now that Carrie is kissing is old wrinkles while selling millions and Daughtry's on her heel, Clive seems to want to dismiss Kelly. Too bad Kelly is so nice. If he pulled this crap on Carrie I-pretend-to-be-nice Underwood she'd be public ripping him a new one! Kelly just got the SONG OF THE YEAR award from ASCAP for "Because Of You" and now he's publically disrespecting her? Nice. What and asHhole!! CLUCK FIVE! Yeah, and since Kelly won't say it to you Clive Davis... I will...FUCD.

I heard the much fawned-over Carrie Underwood sing one of her numbers. It sounded alright; then, she failed to hit a note just right. Dang! I winced; just like I did last year, when Katharine McPhee mangled Elvis songs.
