Isaiah Tries to Make Nice with the Gays

Click to return to TMZ.comSupposedly reformed gay-basher Isaiah Washington did a public service announcement for gay advocacy groups, but for an ad that stresses the importance of words, it didn't really say a whole lot.

Washington doesn't reference his "fa**ot" slur against "Grey's Anatomy" cast member directly -- saying only that using certain words sends "a message of hate" -- and overall, the takeaway from the ad is that words ... mean something! All the time! Bet Isaiah wishes he'd known this earlier!

Words, it seems, can also maybe cost you your job, as Washington's fate for next season on the hit ABC show is yet to be determined.

16. I agree with you Lisa. I can't say much for gay lifestyles...don't agree with them but who am I to judge what others do behind closed doors.

18. At what point are we going to let this go and move on?

I mean, what he said was wrong. I'm not arguing the point. And I'm not arguing that actions do and should have consequences associated with them.

HOWEVER, who out there reading this hasn't said something they regret? No, you might not be a celebrity, but guess what? I bet your errant comment caused someone some pain, or caused you some embarrassment.

Personally, I think that Isaiah has done more than 90% of people would do - he's taken a very public step towards making amends.

When will we stop punishing him? We can't move on if we can't learn from and let go of the past.

21. I love Gray's Anatomy but have never been a fan of Mr. Washington. It seems to me that he is a person with a bad attitude and anger problems. I really think they should fire him. He should stop talking and go to anger management classes instead. I don't think his comment was directed at anyone except the person he was angry with at the time. He may just hate everyone and mad at the world in general. Too much media attention to his comment as well as Imus. Imus should never had been fired and should NEVER have responded - especially to Al Sharpton.

22. Fire him. None of us would get away with saying that. I was called that word often when I was a kid by bullies like Isaiah and it's traumatizing. He should be selling cars or something.

24. You know...if white people were allowed to JUST apologize and move on I would be more sympathetic to his apology, BUT when a white person says something you have Sharpton and Jackson rallying the country to hang the white person from the highest tree,

BUT if a black person says something stupid there are no rallys and an apology seems to be enough...WELL...when JUST apologies are finally enough for both whites and blacks I will be more sympathetic. Blacks just seem to be full of excuses as to why they seem to be allowed to say whatever and white people are held to a higher standard and lose their jobs and humiliated in the press.

SAME standards for both groups are in order. This whole 400 years of oppression excuse has got to end...take personal RESPONSIBILITY !!!!!!!!!!!

25. This is issue is so over.......nobody is perfect. How many people have used a hate word in their life publicly or privately? Many of us have and we know it......that includes laughing at a racial or gay joke as well. Quit being a hypocrite! We need to look at ourselves before we judge someone else. If we want people to respect everyone in this world than we need to start being real and looking at our own actions.

26. EVERYONE...QUIT being so F****** sensitive. If there was a camera and microphone following everyone around we would ALL be at fault for saying SOMETHING offensive to some body...If you want changes in the world start with the person in the mirror...it takes very little effort to just be nice to people.

29. I don't care if Washington comes back or not but George better be back or the show will lose a lot of fans.

30. #31,33,....................good examples why issues don't get resolved. Ignorance is Bliss.
# 35 I don't see Don Imus doing any PSA's.....I wonder why??? Regardless, he was stupid and apologized. It is a done issue
