Probation Dept's Statement on Paris' Release

Paris HiltonThe following is a statement released by the Probation Department in Los Angeles:

"Paris Hilton was granted a conditional sentence in Los Angeles Metro Superior Court on January 22, 2007. A conditional sentence or "summary probation" is monitored by the court for compliance unless the court orders formal probation. Although not on formal probation, Ms. Hilton is supervised by the Los Angeles County probation department in regards to electronic monitoring.

Electronic Monitoring is an integral part of community-based alternatives to custody. The Electronic Monitoring (EM) program is available to Los Angeles County Courts as an alternative to custody in accordance with penal code. The probation department contracts with a private vendor to provide electronic monitoring services. Eligible post-sentence inmates are screened for eligibility or it may be court-ordered either prior to conviction as a pretrial release or after conviction as a sentence option.

Paris Hilton applied for the community based alternative to custody program and qualified as low-risk but the department did not recommend Electronic Monitoring because the court order specified ''no Electronic Monitoring.' The Sheriff Department exercised the authority to reassign Ms. Hilton to an Electronic Monitoring sentence."

31. Paris should be ashamed of herself and her family should have never been coddling the spolied American princess. She was spoiled enough to find her clothing, attitude and idiotic displays in the public eye of tantrums and chaos totally acceptable and let this be a model for other youngsters in this country.

I hope she returns to jail SOON or that the troops overseas are having a few HILTON hotels built for their convenience. After all, after fighting Al-Queda all day, what Marine or Special Forces (or any US military person) couldn't use some room service or a dip in the pool in the 120+degree heat.

Horrible. Truly Horrible.

33. Since when is a sheriff allowed to overrule a judge's specific prohibition? Sounds illegal.

35. It is pathetic, if it was a "normal" person no one would give a crap if they were upset about being in jail. They would be forced to serve the full time. And I thought that if you were sentenced to jail for suspended license it was a mandatory sentence... that you could not get out early. Goes to show if you have money and fame you walk. If you are an average Joe you are screwed.

38. You know what, don't blame Paris for her early exit from jail. We should all expect this to happen. We all know that $ buys justice in this country specially in L.A. area. I tip my hat to her lawyers, great job !

39. Clearly it was a mental health issue, as what are the chances that she developed a physical condition that would prevent her from serving her sentence in 3 days alone. Either way it is a joke, for so many reasons. Many positives could have come from Paris being required to serve the sentence she was given. First the bubble head might have grown as a person and clearly anyone that gets convicted of a DUI and then goes driving, while on probation, needs to do some growing. Second, if someone with the power and money that Paris Hilton has could have been seen not be able to buy justice, there would have been some true deterrence created by her sentence. Third, all those girls that want to emulate her might have thought twice about doing something as stupid as she did. Unfortunately, as she lives in a Hilton palace for the remainder of her sentence, sleeping in a princess bed on high thread count sheets with all the cooks, hair stylists and aestheticians coming to her, none of this will occur. She will instead learn that if you drive while on probation for DUI you won’t get to go to the clubs for a few weeks. OMG! Lastly, there are far too many truly mentally ill people in prisons who should be in mental care facilities instead, but the justice system says they must ‘pay for their crime’ and they go to prison – real prisons, for long periods of time - and they become more seriously ill. Yes, being there for 23 days would have been the hardest thing Paris has ever had to deal with, but she wasn’t to be in refugee camp in Darfur, she was in special needs housing unit reserved for high profile people and had her own cell. Someone needs to fire the person who allowed this. I guess every convicted person of power will be hiring Charles Sophy to get the out of jail.

40. What a joke poor mentally ill Paris she can't do jail time she just can't leave her house.
They have maids, cooks, personal aides, phones everywhwere She'll just bring her world into her home for forty days. Paris you have learned nothing but how to be the spoiled brat you are. I'm sure your designer is on the way to bejewel your leg alarm to match your outfit. Your crazy mother is on he phone with her banker to pay them for your release Your on the phone setting up the parties for each of the 40 nights. You said by going to jail it would send a message to your fans if you do the crime you, you do the time
Believe me that is not the message they got. They got the message that the legal system can be bought and paid for.
