Celebrity Justice
Paris Standoff -- Sheriff vs. Judge

TMZ has learned the reason Paris Hilton stayed at home while the lawyers and judge sat in court is because the Sheriff's Department refused to pick her up.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ the Sheriff's position is that the judge does not have the power to order her to court. The Sheriffs believe they have sole jurisdiction to monitor and control Hilton while she is under house arrest.

The Sheriff's Department says they are the only ones authorized to take her anywhere. Thus, the standoff in court.

The issue may have been resolved, but that is why the hearing was delayed this morning.

167. This treatment today is ridiculous, particularly on a misdemeanor charge....I hope that family makes certain that judge and his city attorney counterpart find new jobs elsewhere....No matter what her little violation, she should not have been treated this way...Shame on LA for sticking it to the rick white folks, while allowing the O.J.'s to drive around and get away with murder.

168. She should sue BACA and the department for releasing her. He should have had his ducks in a row first-- this is too much!!! She deserves her sentence, no doubt, every minute of it, but to have to go through this emotional rollercoaster is uncalled for and BACA is an ass.
She's a pawn in his need for power and control. How very sad. I feel for her only because of this mess. Nicole, watch out --you're next and you know now, you will not get special treatment! OUCH.

169. You MUST be joking? The judge doesn't have the power to order her to court???? Well, who in hell gave Baca the power to override judge???No wonder this country 's laws are going to hell !!!Just as bad as Fla .judge making a deal with HKS so he'd come to court from the Bahamas and not have to worry about DNA over ANS's baby at that time

170. the law or judge should not have played on her emotions like they did. this was just a way to get them in the public eye. all of them need to get new jobs, and let her go home. with people that love her. with real love. not for tv purposes. i think she has suffered enough already. get a life, and get over all the jealousy. when the judge and law enforcement can't agree upon someting that's pretty sad.

171. Is the Sheriff now the sole law enforcement agency? Does he run Los Angeles County now? Is he Judge, Jury, Judicial, all legal matters? I think he was bought hook line and sinker, by the Hilton's.

172. she gets what she deserves.she shouldn't get any special treatment because she is a celebrity.like they say you do the crime you do the time.she said she wants to make a difference and serve her time she not making a difference if she is out. what kind of difference is she making if she wines her way out of jail.all i got to say is you do the crime you do the time.i know what it's like in california i have lived there.they are crooked.

173. The Sheriff is an elected official, he can not be fired! He also runs the jail and the court is staffed by the sheriff's department. The sheriff also decides on good behavior credits and time served, so she will be out soon enough, you can take that to the bank.

174. You don't think that Baca would just put himself under house arrest or early release would he?

Posted at 4:23PM on Jun 8th 2007 by cv

175. The sheriff is in charge of the jails and can decide on things like time served, early release, and good behavior credits. If Paris serves more than 7 more days i would be very surprised.

176. This Sheriff has over stepped his bounds, some one needs to tell the sheriff that he works for the court and not the other way around. The Sheriff is to carry out the law and the court determines whether there is a law broken and meter out the justice as is called for and to do this equally for all folks and not just the poor on one side the the rich on the other side. This sheriff is in comtempt and I hope that the judge brings down the hand of the law against the sheriff.

177. "IT'S ABOUT TIME",,justice shall prevail. " Back to jail sweetie". I really wonder if she'll learn anything from this.

178. The law in Los Angeles does not require anyone to spend more than 1 day in jail for driving on a suspended license. My daughter was caught driving on a suspended license on a friday and she stayed over the weekend (no judge available) and released 1st thing on monday morning.

179. WTF.....the sheriff is an asshole that is surely on the take and the justice system in the US is a joke...lets put more poor non violent crime victims in jail to add to the over population and let the rich run the country
