BET Awards -- The White Elephant in the Room

Hang on tight -- its about to get racial up in here. TMZ has learned that 2007 could be the first year that a white musician wins a Black Entertainment Television Award ... besides Michael Jackson.
Robin Thicke, BET Awards
Platinum-selling superstar Robin Thicke has been nominated for two BET Awards: Best Male R&B Artist, and his song "Lost Without You" is up for a Viewer's Choice Award. Only two other white artists have ever even been nominated for a BET Award -- Justin Timberlake and Eminem -- but neither of them took home the prize. Could Robin break down the BET color barrier?!

The competition is thick; Thicke is up against Akon, John Legend, Gerald Levert, and Ne-Yo for Best Male, and competing with Beyonce, Birdman & Lil' Wayne, Bow Wow featuring Chris Brown, Ciara and UNK for the Viewer's Choice.

The BET Awards will be live from The Shrine in Los Angeles, Tuesday, June 26.

151. Fist in the air reminds me of a German War Criminal Hitler!
We are all equal Black ,White,Brown, Yellow, or Purple.. I saw many children in the audience, what are you teaching them when you say "Black Power! " Blacks are better than everyone? Hypocritical! Tolerance, equality, forgivenness, and acceptances should be
the teachings for a different world. I turned into the award show to honor some of my favorite artist who move me incredibly.

155. You people amaze me. You could not even attempt to argue a more foolish point. Regardless of race, color or what have you this and all award shows are merely rich people stroking eachother. You can post comments back and forth all day about what is racist and what is not, the fact of the matter is you have more in common with the people you are arguing with than those you argue over. The true crime of the 21st century is that despite all the evidence we are given that the real seperation in this country exists economically, we create fictional disputes over race. Both black and white are guilty of buying into this nonsense, racism was created to keep white slaves from joining black slaves in revolution against their masters (yes whites were enslaved as well). And it seems to this day we still pander to the desires of the upper crust who would have us kill eachother over crumbs rather than annex our due portion of the world economy from them. I could careless if Beyonce wins an award or if Robin Thicke wins an award. This is a horribly programmed station that re-enforces vicious stereotypes and perpetuates ignorance by feeding on peoples need to have their own "culture". We are all intruders in this country and we are ALL guilty of it's past transgressions. America is our culture. If you live here and take for granted (which most of you obviously do) the freedoms that soo many poor unfortunate bastards have died to bestow you with, you have already forsaken yourselves...so please argue amongst yourselves foolishly about black and white entertainment...keep it gully...or assimilate to our society for you might as well already be dead if you do not see you are pawns.

156. IM PROUD TO SAY THAT IM AN AFRICAN AMERICAN AND I DO ADMIRE ROBIN THICKE FOR WHAT HE IS DOING BUT I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SAY THAT I UNDERSTAND WHY IT IS SUCH A BIG STORY FOR HIM WINNING A BET AWARD BECAUSE US AFRICAN AMERICANS WERE REALLY EXCITED AND PLEASED WHEN HALLEY BARRY,AND DENZEL WASHINGTON WERE THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICANS TO WIN AN ACADEMY AWARD IN YEARS SO I HONESTLY SEE WERE MANY PEOPLE ARE COMING FROM!!!! NO ONE STEPPED AND MADE IT A BIG STORY WHEN THEY WON THE AWARDS, IT WAS HONESTLY JUST A BIG PAT ON THE BACK BUT NOW THAT ROBIN THICKE IS NOMINATED FOR A BET AWARD EVERYONE WANTS TO SAY THAT WERE RACIST AND THAT SOMEONE OF A DIFFERENT RACE NEED TO BREAK OUR COLOR BARRIER THAT WE'RE CARRYING PLUS IN OUR WORLD TODAY YOU CANT HAVE IT ALL AND CHECK OUT THE NAME OF THE NETWORK *BET-BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION* THE SHOW WAS MADE TO HONOR OUR BLACK ENTERTAINERS IN OUR SOCIETY THAT NO OTHER SHOW OR T.V. NETWORK APPRECIATES, AND ACKNOWLEGDE!!! SO WHEN PEOPLE STEP FORTH ONCE AGAIN AND SAY THAT WERE RACIST THEY NEED TO CHECK THEIR HISTORY AND FIND OUT WHY MANY AFRICAN AMRERICANS DONT ATTEND THE ACADEMY AWARDS AND THE OSCARS!!!
THANK YOU!!!

157. White Americans, how quickly they forget, or should I say, how "deliberately dismissive" most white Americans are when it comes to race and race issues in America, just like their ancestors. It was only until 1964 that we became "first class citizens" and not "beast of the fields", a phrase often quoted from the Bible and used for decades when describing black Americans in the Congressional Record, the daily diary of Congress.

As for WET, don't you remember how BLACK AMERICANS were excluded from just about every segment of American society, except raising your children and cleaning your homes. Read your history books.

158. Im like alot of others about the white entertainment awards. Bro Jessie and Bro Al would have to accidentally go to work again. HAHA I think its ok to have these bet, but really what would blacks say about it. HONESTLY if WHITES had their own awards, month, Black USA, BET entertainments channel and so on and so on

159. All of you should win silliest arguement of the year award...who cares!!!!
What effect does this have on your daily life...NONE...it's a trick to sell you more watered down entertainment that will never even reach a sixth grade reading level. The fact African Americans snub the academy awards and oscars due to the fact they were not included is all fine and dandy, but once again I pose to you this query...how hard are these people really struggling in society? They could certainly get a table at a chic restuarant before you or I (much less afford the meal served), they could probably break laws which would land us in jail with little or no reprecussions. I mean honestly look inside yourself and tell me that just because she is Black you have more in common with Beyonce than me. If you believe the answer is yes you are deeply deluded as to what OUR society is really about. I will never deny racism exists...it surely does thanks to people like you who think the BET awards merit a second thought. If it bothers you white people soo much that BET has an awards show honoring entertainers you either have probably never heard of or don't like...get a life. And for all the African americans who think that BET cares about you or your "culture"...you are missing the bottom line. They are SELLING you fads, images and ideals that cater to THEIR agenda in life and not your collectively shared struggle. BET and every other corporation mascarading as your friend or savior is far more responsible for the inequities in your lives than any average white person who is also struggling to get by. Open your eyes people you are being played against eachother for a reason, Al Sharpton has more in common with George W Bush than he does you and the same came be said for George W Bush and any of his die-hard white constituients. These people do not care about you...in fact they are all banking on the fact you do not care about yourselves or others enough to do anything about it.

160. Pamela why do you hold such a grudge for issues that have a significantly lightened impact on you than the times you mention? I am a Latin American Woman born and raised in the USA. I have seen my fair share of injustice from blacks and whites alike, and I blame niether race for the persons in them who have acted so disruptively in my life. I am in no means trying to justify what happened to your ancestors, but please be aware enough of history to know that it is the wealthy people who made, enforced and cherished the laws and norms which had pursecuted your people. You speak with such disdain for an entire race of people, who like you most have had to struggle. Now admitedly I have seen more priveledged whites than blacks, but on the flip side of that coin African Americans are far removed from the horrific tradgedies taking place all over the world today. Why is it we as Americans think we have it so bad, other than the fact our government has become an oppressive war machine (our fault by the way for doing nothing about it) we live good lives. All we can do is bicker back and forth on moot issues like racism. Everyone is prejudiced in some way, it's the ones who refuse to see it and act maliciously on these judgements who are to blame. People who have developed a chip on their shoulders either from being taught whites are out to get them or someone who was robbed and viciously assualted by a black man...both of which happened to me. I refuse to believe there is a conspiracy understood by whites on a genetic level that would have them do away with us all. And I also believe the man that robbed and assualted me was merely a lost soul and not the product of an inferior race. I apologize if this seems harsh, it just deeply saddens me to see people arguing black and white ignoring the vast grey space between them called life. Some people suck, some don't it is determined by action not race.

163. To we've arrived baby: Oprah is a horrible role model. Look at her appearance compared to then and now. A doctor definately had a hand in that, she changed her appearance to further broaden the demographic range by whom she is consumed. Not to mention her style and subject matter seemed more geared to WHITE suburbanite women. Why assume she cares about you or your plight? Just because she is rich and black does not mean she understands what YOU think it means to be black. Seriously how often do you think Oprah gets discriminated against, she lives a life you will never know but because she has a similar pigmentation you think she would take your side? You are a fool.

164. Seriously, I thank you for your comments. No, I don't have a grudge against anyone. I have friends of all colors and I love people in general. History is history, we can't change it but folks constantly try to distort it. Want to read about some real injustice. Go to Google and look up the Martinsville Seven. Take care, God bless and KEEP HOPE ALIVE!

PS You're not harsh and I don't have a chip on my shoulder. Actually, I get good vibes from your words. Me, I just tell it like it is. My husband calls me the assassin, I kill 'em with the truth. Health, peace, love and happiness to you always!

165. Just a few keypoints I wanted to address:
1. Just because there is no "WET" does not mean that there are no racist channels/awards shows/etc. in the favor of whites.
2. (Addressed to #25) It took years for MTV to play videos by Blacks/African Americans, thus came BET. Even today, the difference in quality between videos played on MTV vs. those on BET.
3. To those in favor of "WET," you act as if white people aren't racisv themselves. You do remember KKK, right?
4. ( Addressed to #69): Memorial Day is observed, and there really is no comparison.
5. (Addressed to #151): No, "Black Power!" does not signify putting Blacks/African Americans on a pedastal above other races, it puts us on the same level as other races.
