I think one reason this story is important is that it highlights the excessive litigation inherent in our society and each one of these characters - Larry Birkhead and Howard K, in particular - are playing off the potential for the courts to hand them a half billion dollars if they can play the game right. They aren't earning this money, but they might end up richer than 99% of the population because of their litigation tactics. That seems like a problem to me.
