Meredith Locks Up With McMahon Over Benoit Murders

Click to return to TMZ.comMeredith Vieira went toe-to-toe with Vince McMahon on this morning's "Today" -- questioning the WWE honcho's stance that steroid use had nothing to do with Chris Benoit's grisly double murder-suicide.

Vieira was quick with a left hook to McMahon, asking him how WWE could make such a statement before toxicology results were revealed. Vince stuck to his guns, saying a press release sent out earlier this week was "reacting to the hysteria of the media," telling the press to quit speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the killings -- until evidence proved otherwise.

On Monday, the WWE said the murders of Chris Benoit's wife and 7-year-old son were not an act of "roid rage," because "the physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation," and cited as evidence the time between murders and the leaving of Bibles by the bodies.

16. I think everyone needs to settle down and show some respect towards Chris, Nancy and Daniels families and keep the hysteria down because we weren't there, we do no know them personally, nor are we qualified experts to be making such harsh, quick judgements.

Suicide has personally affted me (through other people I know) and the one thing I learned about all the times it has affected me is to not jump to conclusions, try and be patient and wait and see what the authorities/professionals come up with....that''s if they ever do because we will never really fully know why suicide or tragedies like these happen at times. Sometimes it's the person who committs the act that is the only one that knows.

So settle down and show some respect to the families involved in the tragedy and remember that Chris still has 2 living, breathing and greiving children that don't need anymore crap to deal with.

17. First of all, wrestling is for losers. Second, I am disgusted by the tribute that they did for Benoit. It was apparent Monday morning that he had committed the crimes and yet they went ahead and played a tribute! WTF were they thinking?? Hey I have a great idea, why don't the networks get together and do a tribute to OJ Simpson when he dies? Better yet why don't we celebrate all murderers and whenever they are executed, we can show a video on tv about their lives. As far as I am concerned, Benoit was a pussy wimp who didn't have the guts to face his crime. He should have just killed himself and left his family alone. Burn in hell Benoit!

18. Thank GOD Merideth is on the case! I thought we'd NEVER know what really went on that night.

Will she ask vince:

"What do you think caused Benoit to kill his family?"

a) Roid Rage b) misunderstanding over remote control

c) Fidelity argument d) Masterpiece Theater

19. Vince McMahon doesn't know if steroids were a factor or not---he has no right to say they weren't a factor---we don't know that. Time will tell---he's just worried about the WWE, and that is very sad at a time like this.

20. What Chris did is unforgivable, especially the evidence coming out about killing his son with a choke hold. And, shooting the boy up with mail order unprescribed human growth hormone.

Chris Benoit was a narcacistic pig whose story should remain in the headlights. Let it be a huge warning to others about domestic violence and steroid abuse. And, may it finally open a full out probe into the WWE and the deaths surrounding steroid abuse

21. Meredith was questioning the WWE statement saying it wasn't roid rage, she didn't have all her facts VINCE was right, he said it wasn't a act of RAGE it was a thought out act by BENOIT. Meredith was being argumentative for nothing!!! she looked stupid, she is a horrible interviewer, I think VINCE handled himself fine.

22. The sport idolizes violence so it should come as no surpise that the arena violence is overflowing into the home. The sport has no educational value....just a bunch of pumped up apes battling each other.

23. 18. Heather posted "So settle down and show some respect to the families involved in the tragedy and remember that Chris still has 2 living, breathing and greiving children that don't need anymore crap to deal with".

So the wife and child's deaths aren't in vane this murder should remain scrutinized. If it saves even one family from such horrors then maybe their deaths wouldn't have been for nothing!!!

24. Vince is a "roid" user himself.

WE LOVE YOU, PARIS!!

26. A helpless child was murdered by the father he adored---and Vince McMahon is worried about the image of the WWE? Perhaps he should worry---he showed that image matters more to him than the loss of an innocent child.

27. Vince is also scared and keeping under wraps the links between WWE players and illegal mail order steroid purchases. Once the steroid ring blows, likely more WWE players besides Chris Benoit will be found to be frequent customers from this mail order steroid company.

Authorities in Georgia were investigating a link between Benoit and a Florida business that may have supplied him with steroids.

Prosecutors in upstate New York who have been investigating the company’s drug sales said Benoit received deliveries from Signature Pharmacy and MedXLife.com, which sold steroids, human growth hormone and testosterone on the Internet.

Six people, including two of the pharmacy’s owners, have pleaded guilty in the investigation, and 20 more have been arrested, including doctors and pharmacists. The probe continues.

28. What Benoit did was inexcusable.

But this was deliberately planned and calculated. Benoit had some deep-rooted, dark social and psychological probelems. But this was not 'roid rage,' even if steroids were discovered to be in his system. Roid rage is when you snap. The time that elapsed between the murders, the timing of the text messages, the fact that nothing in the house, other than the murders, seemed out of sorts, indicates that.

I love how everyone is suddenly an expert on steroids and that they are the root of all evil when an athlete is involved in a crime. How many of you so-called experts really know much about steroids? For that matter, how much of the media really knows about steroids?

"Roid rage" is as much myth as fact. You are always responsible for your actions. If you are capable of killing, you are capable of killing. It is already within you. Taking steroids doesn't suddenly turn you into a killer. While drugs can bring out the worst behaviors in people, those behaviours are already ones that have pre-existed within that person.

Yes, I have taken steroids before, though not often. I used to compete in bodybuilding and I've always had access to them through some gyms I've worked out at. (And, no, I'm not trying to scare people from going to some gyms. It's quiet and non-bullying. By that I mean that people who don't want to take them will never be privy to the environment.)

Yeah, sure, you might feel the effects, good and bad, but I knew I was always in control. If you can't handle it, then don't get involved with them, much like if you can't hold your liquor, as they say, then don't drink. But people still do anyway, usual accompanied with behavior that is absolutely stupid at best and detrimental and destructive to others at worst,

It's funny how we live in a society where smoking and drinking are so soically acceptable. The alcoholic will not only tear down themself but also everyone else around them (i.e. their families.) How many pro athletes, let alone Cincinnati Bengals specifically, get arrested for DUIs? Does the fact that they didn't happen to kill a family of 4 change the fact that these offences happen all the time? And how many people die of smoking every year? Thousands? Hundreds of thousands?

Tons of people take steroids, whether you believe it or not, although not nearly probably as many as those who smoke or drink. Yet, there are maybe only a handful of steroid-related deaths every year. But since steroids are not socially acceptable, we always stereotype them and people on them even further.

The Chris Benoit story is tragic. It tarshishes the legacy of the man that he WAS. As a long-time wrestling fan it is more bizarre because this murder-suicide represents everything that the Chris Benoit legacy did not stand for; perseverance, heart and never giving up. Even more strange is that it appears no one in the wrestling fraternity saw this dark side in him. What's more is that no matter how glamorous life seems to be for pro wrestlers/ pro athletes, it's not necessarily what's bubbling under the surface. What he did was inexcusable. But it was not 'roid rage."

29. "Personally, I think it was that his wife threatened divorce,
taking the house, child support, and alimony. Basically, taking
everthing he has worked for. If this is the case due to him
cheating, he deserved it, if it was because he was gone 300 days a
year to keep her in luxury, then most guys would of cracked too. I
don't think it was 'roids. I think there is something more.
Just my opinion."

How sweet! Indeed, why get a divorce, pay child support when you can just
kill her and the child? What was the name of the man who killed
his pregnant wife and cut out the 8 months baby out of her belly,
because he didn't want to stay with her and did not want to pay
child support? Looks like he is not alone in this world.

30. He does make a point... She asked how he could make such a statement before toxicology results came back... at the same time the media is making statements and speculations without toxicology results. I'd rather assume what evidence proves (according to the lab test he had back in... what was it, march?).

But if we're making speculations... I'd say he had several screws loose. Its just a very sad she didn't get the divorce back a couple of years ago like she wanted to.

Now, T... Regarding your comments, I highly doubt the wife's aim was to just take his money... She had claimed abuse and wanted a restraining order (if I remember right). This wasn't a case of "oh women take everything from a man that earned it." Not everything is about money... Believe it or not, sometimes guys *gasp* are BAD people too! And obviously he wasn't anywhere close to dad or husband of the year, regardless of his paycheck.
