Meredith Locks Up With McMahon Over Benoit Murders

Click to return to TMZ.comMeredith Vieira went toe-to-toe with Vince McMahon on this morning's "Today" -- questioning the WWE honcho's stance that steroid use had nothing to do with Chris Benoit's grisly double murder-suicide.

Vieira was quick with a left hook to McMahon, asking him how WWE could make such a statement before toxicology results were revealed. Vince stuck to his guns, saying a press release sent out earlier this week was "reacting to the hysteria of the media," telling the press to quit speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the killings -- until evidence proved otherwise.

On Monday, the WWE said the murders of Chris Benoit's wife and 7-year-old son were not an act of "roid rage," because "the physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation," and cited as evidence the time between murders and the leaving of Bibles by the bodies.

32. If he didn't show up for a live WWE event on Saturday why did McMahon wait two days to call authorities? McMahon is not very intelligent to say that roids were not and could not be the cause. If you just look at the wrestler you can tell he uses steroids!!

33. Just because a drug test was given three months ago does not mean he wasn't doing steroids last weekend. How can the WWE not realize how dumb they look when they keep bringing this up as a defense? Da!

34. Ok, let's think about this. There is a woman and a child dead. Do we really care about the drug angle? Does it make it easier to swallow if we think of it as drug induced? It sounds to me like the guy was way gone before he took a single drug. I am not defending steriod use only pointing to the fact that this is a tragedy and an entire family is dead.

35. From what I know about steroids, his behavior has all of the signs. Rage, remorse afterwards. The WWE should keep their mouths shut and apologize for what they said and stop condoning steroid use. It is prevalent no matter how much they want to deny it.

36. Well, I guess I struck a nerve with the divorce and support theory. Lets get one thing straight, I DO NOT agree with the ending of this tragic saga, I just think that may be what happened. It very well could have been "roid rage", I personally think there was something more. And, once again, although I've thought that this may be a possible theory, I do not agree with his actions. I do however, have seen instances when these circumstances were the case. Maybe it was a combination of both. Like I said, it is only my opinion as to what could have been the case, not that if this turns out to be the case that I condone it.

37. IF YOU SAW MCMAHON ON TV IT'S OBVIOUS THAT HE IS MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THE REPUTATION AND PROFITS OF WWE THAN GETTING THESE PEOPLE OFF STEROIDS. THEY DO TESTS BUT THEY WARN THEM SO THEY MIGHT AS WELL NOT DO THEM. WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE CAME OUT AND SAID IS THAT WE ARE GOING TO DRASTICALLY CHANGE OUR TESTING PROGRAM TO INCLUDE ONLY RANDOM (NO WARNING) TESTS ON A REGULAR BASIS AND NOT ONCE A YEAR. IF THEY ARE CAUGHT USING THEM THEY SHOULD BE FIRED, NO SLAP ON THE WRIST!!! THEY HAVE TOLERATED THIS FOR MUCH TOO LONG!!!!

38. Meredith Viera is about as hard hitting a journalist as Paris Hilton is a member or Mensa.

39. 32. Think about it posted "Ok, let's think about this. There is a woman and a child dead. Do we really care about the drug angle?"

Hell Yes people should care. This is of tragic proportions and should be a warning for anyone in a domestic violence situation....get out and stay out of the marriage before it's too late.

And, this tragic story is a huge warning to those abusing steroids.........

If this horrific murder is simply swept under the rug, the wife and child's deaths would have been in vane!

40. This was a sad and tragic event. Even if the man had stopped using steriods, stoppping steriods can cause depression, paranoia, etc. Using steroids, in addition to causing "roid rage" can also just increase the level of anger and an inability to react to life's events in a reasonable rational way. Either way, steroids obviously had an impact on this man.

As far as growth hormone goes, if his son did have fragile X syndrome or some other disorder leading to growth problems, then growth hormone is considered a viable treatment to help the child reach his full height potential.

My conjecture is that he loved family. However, the pressures of life, a child with illness and difficulties in the marriage that a "normal" person would need assistance in dealing with, were exemplified an immense amount by the side effects of either current or past steroid use. I also do wonder if the violent nature in which he killed his wife was from "roid rage" and the killing of himself and his son was a desperate act upon realizing what he had done and what that would mean for his future and the future of his son. One other thought. They say he killed his son with a choke hold. Perhaps they play wrestled together all the time and he felt it was the least scary way for his son to die--the son probably would've thought they were just playing like normal. There is no excuse, he killed his son and his wife. It's all so horrific.

41. State and federal drug agents staged a late-night raid of the offices of pro wrestler Chris Benoit's personal physician and met with the district attorney investigating the Benoit murder-suicide on Thursday morning to see if any charges should be filed.

The offices of Dr. Phil Astin were raided just before midnight Wednesday, officials said. Astin was at his office at the time of the raid.

Officials said the raid stemmed from the investigation into drugs found in the Benoit home after the bodies of the pro wrestler and his wife, Nancy, and 7-year-old son, Daniel, were found Monday afternoon, Capt. Mike Pruitt said.

Investigators took computers and medical records from Astin's office.

Astin on Wednesday told the Associated Press that he had prescribed testosterone for Benoit. Investigators said there were autographed photos of Benoit and other wrestlers in Astin's office.

Fayette County District Attorney Scott Allard would not comment on the raids but said he had met with local drug task force investigators and the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Meanwhile, prosecutors in upstate New York who have been investigating the deliveries Benoit received from Signature Pharmacy and MedXLife.com, which sold steroids, human growth hormone and testosterone on the Internet.

Terence Kindlon, lawyer for MedXLife co-owner Dr. Gary Brandwein, denied allegations that his client's company sold steroids to Benoit. Brandwein has pleaded not guilty to six counts in New York state court related to the criminal sale of a controlled substance. He was accused of signing and sending prescriptions without ever seeing patients.

44. Men in sports have for years and will continue to use steroids. People still watch sports. These are grown men and no one can or should have to hold their hands thru life. It is not up to Vince to make sure PERSONALLY that they do not take them.

I don't think that what he did had anything to do with steroids. Mental issues, yes but not steroids. Read up people.

I can't stand Meredith. She is a bitch and treated him unfairly and TRIED to put words in his mouth. I wish they would fire her already.

45. As far as Meredith, If I had to pick between her and Lauer, I'd watch Fox & Friends. lol
