Meredith Locks Up With McMahon Over Benoit Murders

Click to return to TMZ.comMeredith Vieira went toe-to-toe with Vince McMahon on this morning's "Today" -- questioning the WWE honcho's stance that steroid use had nothing to do with Chris Benoit's grisly double murder-suicide.

Vieira was quick with a left hook to McMahon, asking him how WWE could make such a statement before toxicology results were revealed. Vince stuck to his guns, saying a press release sent out earlier this week was "reacting to the hysteria of the media," telling the press to quit speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the killings -- until evidence proved otherwise.

On Monday, the WWE said the murders of Chris Benoit's wife and 7-year-old son were not an act of "roid rage," because "the physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation," and cited as evidence the time between murders and the leaving of Bibles by the bodies.

62. I think everyone has really missed the whole act here- there has been 3 deaths. Regardless of the fact if it was caused by steriods or mental problems or what. A mother , a son and a father are gone. There are other family members that are grieving and are probably in a state of shock and confusion because we will never really know what happened that weekend. You can not condenm someone if you do not know the whole story. As far as giving growth hormones to their son, do any of you know if they had talked to a doctor, no you don't so do not make any assumptions. Do you know if the steroids were for Chris no you do not, you do forget that his wife also was a wrestler at one time and I am sure she worked out also, not saying that the steroids were hers either because I wasn't there. Everyone just needs to step back and let the investigation be done and let the families and the friends grieve in peace without all of the snarky attacks that are being done. We are not the ones that need to judge anyone only God can do that. I am a fan of wrestling and I know that I will miss Chris in the ring, and as a person I feel saddened at the loss of 3 people to have died such as they have.

I am an American and have been under medical care sense I was small. The medical care I have received has been great and it has done nothing but allowed me to live a some what normal life. it is up to each individual to explore their medical care, ask questions and make decisions regarding the care and the drugs chosen to help us. That is what is wonderful about this country,We can choose. Someone abusing drugs and someone attempting to survive an illness are two different blogs. Not to be confused with each other.

64. Okay, everyone's talking that we shouldn't speculate, but it's always increasing. We know Daniel had Fragile X syndrome, we know that they were injecting him with drugs
to help him grow. We DON'T know if it was under a doctor's supervision or not. Instead we have people saying that he was injecting his son with drugs because he wanted a perfect child. Is is SO hard to google search "Fragile X" especially NOW?????

As for Vince McMahon -- you people act like it was Vince who was supplying Chris the drugs! There are PLENTY of wrestling promotions out there & I'm CERTAIN they have wrestler's who are using steroids. Is that Vince's fault????? The press release was accurate: Chris' actions do not depict the actions typically associated with Roid Rage (to go against the press release, it IS behavior exhibited by long term drug/chemical usage).

Let's get it straight: this was NOT "ROID RAGE!" Chris' actions were well thought out & deliberate. Does this mean steroids (and other chemicals) are not a factor? Absolutely not! Look at Kurt Cobain, any long-terms usage of drugs/chemicals create dillusions, paranoia, and depression. That is not the state of mind you want to be in to raise a child that suffers from a disease like Fragile X.

I hate to bring up this topic, but I don't view this as a case of domestic battery. Yes, there WAS a petition for protection in the divorce papers, but there have been NO calls to 911 (Debra Michaels claimed Stone Cold Steve Austin was abusive and I DO believe that as there were phone calls and arrests); but there's no history with the Benoits. I'm NOT saying it's not possible, I'm just saying there's no history. I hate to say it, but I have seen "petition for protection" be used in order for a woman to get sole custody simply so she can get more money in child support. I'm not accusing Nancy of this, I'm just stating that unfortunately these things do happen. ( and for the pro-woman extremists who misread that statement, I say "NO, I AM NOT JUSTIFYING CHRIS' ACTIONS! -- Chris did not kill them because of a divorce.)

I think some reports should wait before they come out: one report said Chris smothered Daniel by putting a plastic bag over his hear; now they're saying it's a choke hold that killed Daniel. I think some false facts under "anonymous" (ie, people not connected with the case) reports are starting to come out JUST to sell newspapers, news shows, and news websites).

The witch hunts need to stop. Vince McMahon and the WWE should not be the ones who "pay for this heinous crime" -- there is only one person who should pay for it: Chris Benoit.

65. I dont think WWE should be on TV at all attempting to explain some nut case. They should just countinue to stop taling about the guy period.
The need for WWE to defend from the on set makes them look guilty or afraid of something

66. Can't understand why folks are assigning blame EVERYWHERE except to WHOM it BELONGS??? Vinve McMahon and the WWE did not kill these people - neither did the family doctor. CHRIS BENOIT KILLED HIS FAMILY AND THEN HIMSELF!!!! He is the ONLY responsible party!!! Not Steriods or some PHANTOM Pressure !!! PLENTY PEOPLE TAKE Steriods for MEDICAL REASONS - you don't hear of the just Snapping!!!! Chris BENOIT WAS EVIL - just like anyone else who would perfomr such heinous acts!!!

67. Why isn't Mr. McMahon being held accountable for the distasteful hoax about his "death"?

68. I really cant find the relevance in how the child died. If it were my child then yes I would want to know, but the public can hardly gain anything by knowing ? He was murdered by his own father that much we can say for certain. How it was done doesn't make me feel any more or less angry at the coward. In regards to the domestic violence. it is not uncommon for a celebrity to NOT call 911.The statistics are that a woman is in the most danger when she is leaving or has left. Not calling 911 is no indication there was not on going DV.

69. There have been many instances in history where individuals made horrific mental and physical mistakes in the name of religion, faith, family and honor. There have been many additional instances where overwhelming evidence wrongly convicted a person that is in prison, executed or sometimes freed on exonerating evidence. Rather than ravage the honor and integrity of the person, his employment industry or his family, why not allow the American justice system to work and let the authorities gather the evidence. A dozen scenarios can be suggested by the highly suggestive minds on this site. What must be remembered is that each of the participants was a family member or friend to someone and they too read these blogs. Our position is not to judge but rather to render justice based on our legal system. Everyone that feels so strongly about any subject should take action. This can be in the form of donations of time, energy and money to groups that can assist other families challenged by circumstance. Let the system work and then pray for the ones in your heart.

70. I never like any interviews that Meredith does. She has no skills as an journalist. I watched the Today show this morning as I do everymorning and I am not impressed with her skills at all.
Vince said that the comments made immediately after this awful event were made out of ''reaction to the hysteria of the media" and their reports of the events which has shocked us all. And he ask that the press "quite speculations, until evendice proved otherwise". Then she goes on the question him at least three more times about the same thing, instead of moving on with the intervier. That's when he fought back.
In NO way do I agree with what Chris Benoit did to his family. It was low-down, cowardly and outright discusting. He should rot in HELL for his actions.
As far a Meredith, she should remain with doing "fluff interviews", like those previously done on the View and leave the real news to the PROFESSIONALS, which she is NOT.

71. If a guy owns a pizza parlor and has an employee that smokes weed, snorts coke, and shoots heroin then goes into some rampage killing his family, is the owner of the pizza parlor responsible? Probably not and neither is Vince Mcmahon

72. Jenny, it's not about "how" the child died, it's about making sure the facts are straight. There is no excuse for what Chris Benoit did, but we read a small paragraph and say "HOW COULD ANYONE NOT SEE THIS COMING????"

We don't know for certain there was Domestic Violence. Again, I'm not saying there wasn't, I'm just saying the people that want to make the Benoits the Poster family for Domestic Violence isn't acurate. Do celebrities hide DV? Maybe. That's why I used Debra & Stone Cold as an example: Stone Cold was FAR more a celebrity than Chris Benoit but that didn't stop Debra from calling 911.

I've read on most blogs that men who commit Domestic Violence are the controlling types who say, "if I can't have her no one can." I'm sure that's true; so why in the divorce papers did Chris want joint custody of Daniel? What about his previous relationship? How did that one end? Was there reports of DV there? He wasn't a celebrity then.

My point is not an argument of Domestic Violence, it's of people not wanting a witch hunt. People are so enraged by this topic (which is understandable) that every piece of news furthers the anger. If a news piece/gossip was printed that said "Known History: Benoit liked hamburgers extremely rare" people would be writing, "SEE! THAT SICKO ALWAYS HAD A TASTE FOR BLOOD!"

Look at the picture of Chris and his son, it'd be so easy to say, "Look at that madman, you can see it in his eyes that he wants to kill that poor boy." And we both know there'd be 200 posts following that agree with me.

What has happened is without a doubt a tragedy. It's horrific and I think of Chris Benoit as a vile person. We want to understand "how could this happen" but we don't need to succumb to the sensationalism of it.

I'm surprised by some of these comments that there isn't a riot in front of WWE's HQ.

73. I THINK BENIOT GOT TOO MANY HITS ON THE HEAD. NOT STERIODS.

74. This problem is much bigger than steroid abuse. People kill other people every day, and most of them are not on steroids. There are larger psychological issues than blaming it all on the abuse of a substance. Hulk Hogan took steroids for 30 years, I've never heard of him killing anybody. Or all the other hundreds of wrestlers or pro-athletes who take steroids or performance enhancing drugs. The issue of steroids seems a bit of a moot point. Looking for something to blame for what appears to be a senseless act of violence by a mainstream celebrity figure.

Was OJ Simpson taking steroids?

75. It appears that Benoit's innocent family has paid with their lives for his and the WWE's obsession with violence. The public's fascination with violent sports and fake wrestling in particular is a sad indication of the depths to which America society has fallen. While I don't consider professional wrestlers completely innocent in this regard , it is hard to condemn them for seeking the fame and fortune that such employment provides. After all, if it weren't for the thousands of men, women and kids screaming for blood and bigger, meaner combatants at the local wrestling complex, then none of the pro wrestlers would have a job. The American people are simply re-enacting the sins and degradation that the Roman Empire established 2000 years ago.
