Libby Liberated. Paris Punished.

Paris Hilton and Scooter Libby have one (and probably only one) thing in common -- "excessive" sentencing -- but it's Paris, not Scooter, who actually did the time. Nice to have some friendly Bush on your side!
Scooter Libby and Paris Hilton

President Bush commuted the 2-1/2 year sentence of longtime White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby yesterday, calling Libby's punishment "excessive" -- just as Paris said of her own summertime slammer-time. Libby was busted for leaking a CIA agent's identity, putting her life in jeopardy. Aside from more than a few fashion disasters, Hilton was convicted of what some considered a glorified traffic violation. And who gets the free pass?

Most Americans aren't sympathetic to Paris and Scooter. When TMZ asked whether Paris got what she deserved, an overwhelming 93 percent of the more than 121,000 people who answered the poll responded that yes, Ms. Hilton deserved to do time for the crime. Similarly, most Americans think Libby should've done his too: A SurveyUSA poll revealed that 60 percent of Americans believe that Scooter Libby's 2-1/2 year sentence should stick. It didn't.

31. She was NOT a covert agent..! http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode50/usc_sec_50_00000426----000-.html

And since Valerie Plane was not stationed overseas at the time of the disclosure, she is and was not protected. One cannot call an employee of CIA who goes through the Langley gates daily and publicly a covert agent.

As Plame was doing that there was no secret about her employment at CIA. Nor was she under cover.

32. My god. Are you people who write this stuff stupid or what?

How can you begin to compare 93% and 60%?

Tell me, TMZ, as I will never know: What IS it like to be STOO-PID?

33. Cheney or Rove outed Valarie Plame. Scooter had a severe attack of Alzheimer's when testifying under oath and couldn't remember any significant names/details. He was judged fairly, not excessively. He was a fall guy but because of his connections to Cheney, Rove, and Bush his @ss will be protected in exchange for his memory loss. It's a shame that the "righties" are always so willing to believe what their talking heads like Rush feed them instead of seeking out the truth. It's criminal that so many of them have lost friends or loved ones in this senseless war based on a pack of lies.

35. Thanks for clarifying, pointing out TMZ's obvious agenda and informing some of the posters on here simonesdad2007. Libby was never busted for leaking Plame's identity but rather for lying to the feds about who leaked her identity to the press. Obviously, a lot of people don't know what really happened except for what they hear from others or read from the biased media. And no, you can't compare what Paris Hilton did to what Libby did (which is all bunch of bologna from get go); to the poster that stated that he could have a woman killed, you were wrong. He did not leak Plame's identity and besides, at that time she was not even an undercover CIA operative.

On the other hand, Paris got what she deserved cause she's the one that could have gotten someone killed by being irresponsible. Also, the media is quick to forget all the pardons Bill Clinton dished out during his administration; ones ranging from tax-evasion to possession of cocaine and so on (I could go on). Now for Hilary to come out and speak against Bush's decision is not only hypocritical but laughable. Mind you, I'm no fan of the president either but at this point I'd rather him be there than any of the Democrats in Washington at this time. Politics will always be played regardless of the party involved and that's why I strongly feel we need a third party in this country aside from the sorry Democrats and the spineless republicans. Peace!

36. Libby did not leak plames name. Armitage leaked her name to Novak. Fitzgerald knew that early on and should have dismissed the case at that time. By then he was on a mission. Shameful isn't it? Can you remember the EXACT words you used 3 or 4 years ago?? These people like Russert talk all the time and probably knew everything about Plame early on. Next you need to remember that Russert was once a staff lackey for a big shot democrat lawmaker. Don't trust him, don't watch his show, you may get halftruths, untruths, and innuendos. The level of ignorance shown on this site and the level of people willing to spew on subjects they actually no nothing about is truly amazing. Frankly, I believe it is driven by hate not knowledge.

37. The presidential pardon authority is available to any president and almost all presidents have exercised it. Clinton pardoned 140 people in his closing hours in office. BUT those were not traitors who leaked CIA names for political gains. This man could have had a woman who served her country killed.
To me it is obvious that Libby was carrying the wishes of the Vice President Cheney. I would like to see Cheney in prison instead.
It is sad that there isn't an outcry from the public on this.

38. why do the righties always answer criticism with "but he did it first"?!?! rush, o'reilly, hannity, they all do it. i dont recall anyone here saying "bill clinton never pardoned any of his buddies, how dare bush do it!" this is about bush/cheney and their disgusting illegal behaviors!

39. You libs are such hypocrites. Clinton releases Cuban terrorists and Mark Rich when he isn't getting some oral, yet you judge Bush and blame him for everything. If you want justice, let's arrest those Cuban terrorists and Mark Rich again and start from there.

40. So, Kim, if you say 'of course Scooter was the fall guy' then which part of my statement are you claiming was erroneous? Pointing out inaccurate statements is fine as long as you can back up what you are saying. Don't call me names and tell me to get my facts straight if you can't point to a single thing I said that was wrong.

Merrigin - I don't know where it went. Maybe it's with all the W keys the Clinton folks took from the White House keyboards.

41. What Hilton did in driving recklessly on a suspended license on two occasions, and in intentionally violating the other terms of her probation, is only part of the reason she received the sentence.

The fact that she did not accept blame for her actions and attempted to manipulate the legal system in court, in front of the judge, was the final straw.

42. Alex - Libby wasn't the one who leaked the name. How exactly could his involvement have led to Valerie Plame's death?

And as for who Clinton pardoned, have you even heard of Marc Rich? The guy illegally traded with Iran during the hostage crisis. How is that possibly a lesser crime than 'obstruction of justice'?

44. Well our sweet Paris was treated very unfairly. But that is in the past. We have her back now among us.

Free, and back to doing her own thing. As she chooses. Paris being Paris. There is only one Paris. :-) And we love it. :-)

45. Libby was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice.

HE WAS NOT CONVICTED FOR OUTING A CIA AGENT. HE WAS NOT CHARGED WITH OUTING AN AGENT. NO ONE HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH OUTING THIS AGENT. THE ONE WHO FIRST MENTIONED SHE WAS AN AGENT WAS HER HUSBAND, but no one's charging him with anything.

His sentence of 2 1/2 years, $250,000 fine, and two years of probation was considered too severe for what he was convicted of.

Those who supported the president's action said commuting the sentence was the appropriate response, considering that Libby was not found responsible for Plame's initial outing.

TMZ, Libby did NOT out this agent. He was only found guilty of perjury. Read more carefully.

Libby was not pardoned but had his sentence commuted. The felony conviction, the $250,000 fine and two years of probation remain in place.

The power to commute a sentence for a federal offense is vested in the president alone, and does not require a hearing at the Justice Department or White House or any disclosure of deliberations.

"Given the fact that the prosecutor in this case never charged any individual with breaking the law with regard to the disclosure of Valerie Plame’s name to the media, I agree with the president that the sentence was excessive and support his decision to commute Mr. Libby’s prison sentence," said House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Snow said Bush decided on the merits, not political considerations, that the vice president's former chief of staff should be given leniency. He added that Bush respected the jury's guilty decision but called the sentencing excessive.

"The president does not look upon this as granting a favor to anyone and to do that is to misconstrue the deliberations," Snow said. "The president's getting pounded on the right because he didn't do a full pardon. ... But the point of this is that you do not engage in these acts for symbolic or political reasons. You don't do it to make other people happy and say, 'Boy, you showed it to so and so.' The point here is to do what is consistent with the dictates of justice."

Paris's problems have been discussed at length. If you don't have it straight by now, you never will. She just spent 20 or so days in jail, and she did something very serious. She needed REHABILITATION in a very bad way. If it didn't work, send her back to jail.

Alcohol-related traffic deaths are at an all time high since 1992.

According to NHTSA’s preliminary Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data, alcohol-related traffic fatalities are up to 17,941 for 2006 versus 17,525 for 2005, representing a 2.4 percent increase. Fatalities involving a driver with a .08 BAC or higher rose from 13,613 in 2005 to 13,990 in 2006, representing a 2.8 percent increase. At the same time, overall traffic fatalities are down slightly by 0.3 percent.
