Angry Avril Responds to Rip-Off Claims

Earlier this week, TMZ reported that attitudinal Avril Lavigne's song "Girlfriend" was a rip off of a 1979 song by the Rubinoos called "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend." Avril's management flatly denied the band's claims, and now Avril's called BS too.

Writes Avril:

"You may have heard some news that two guys who wrote for some band from the 1970s I have never in my life heard of called the "Rubinoos" are trying to sue me. They have a song called "I Want To Be Your Boyfriend" that has no musical similarities to the song "Girlfriend" that Luke Gottwald and I wrote together. They claim that a small part of the lyrics are the same and are saying that I took these from them. I had never heard this song in my life and their claim is based on 5 words! All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language.

Off the top of my head, two other songs that I can immediately think of with this type of lyric are "Hey, hey, you, you get off of my cloud" by the Rolling Stones and "Hey little girl I want to be your boyfriend" by the Ramones. Simply put, I have been falsely accused of ripping their song off. Luke and I have done nothing wrong and there is no merit to their claim."

31. She is a talentless fraud.

32. yeah, whatever, all I hear is "wah, wah, wah, I'm a stupid, spoiled, clueless brat. I don't understand why it's so wrong to steal songs, be rude to fans or actually SPIT at people because I'm a self-centerd tard"

why can't she just go away?

33. Notice she hasn't made any statement on the claim Chantal Krevaziuk made about her stealing a song called "Contagious". Two years ago, Chantal and Avril were buddies and writing partners. Chantal gave a song to Avril called "Contagious", and now two years later, it's on Avril's album with Avril as the credited writer and no credit to Chantal. She called Avril out on it, and Avril has yet to respond. I think we're starting to see just how much involvement Avril has in the songwriting process.

34. ~This letter speaks volumes on her writing skills.~....We'll probably see a back-pedal from her soon where she'll turncoat the other guy she writes with in an attempt to save face....I agree with the person on the other page, she is a mean-spirited little brat...She instructs 10 year old girls how cool it can be to spit and raise your middle finger.....~lameness~

35. Avril and Isiah Washington should form a club, the "Everyone is against me and I don't understand why because I think I'm great. They are all just jealous!" They can throw pity-parties where you play the blame-game and help each other dig even deeper holes

36. my, my, my...FIRST, she's considered a "one hit wonder" with "Complicated"...then she is blasted with "anyone can sing "Complicated", she isn't going anywhere" when a fan on MTV's web page made the comment. So here we are how many years and hit songs later (she DOES have a huge fan base, people!!) and out of the blue someone wants to sue her. This duplicates the days of the Vanilla Ice/Queen debate. Only EVERYONE knew that VI's sound beat was extremely similar. You can't fault Avril for working with writers who "might" be familiar with a group named the "Rubinoos", even though no one knows that for sure. She is very talented, wealthy as a result of that talent and apparantly, many of you want to hate her for that....get over it....she's there, we are not....let her be...

37. Nasty people here- beats looking in the mirror, huh?....

Anyone can think of countless songs before or after the fact that have similarities. Sometimes subconsciously some elements- riffs, lyrics, titles, are recvcled. It's not much fun to intentionally rip off something- and I doubt if Avril did so. But comments such as "butt ugly" and the like reveal more about the poster than this issue or discussion. I don't care if you're 12 years old, get out of your room and get some exercise, and keep your mouth shut.

38. that song was ABSOLUTELY stolen! No matter what some "expert" she paid for says. Just listen to it! Then she rips on the band she stole it from. It's crazy...

39. I'm sick of this whore...she is more tired than Brit, Paris, and LLo combined. GO AWAY BITCH!

40. Avril did not steal that song!
The producers who supply her with all her songs stole it!

42. I heard of the Rubinoos. They had maybe one semi hit, (if u wanna call it that), in the 70's. She probably thought that she could rip them off thinking they didn't exist anymore. But "NOT"!!!

43. To #25: Avril doesn't deserve any brownie points for keeping her crotch out of reach from the paparazzis' lenses. You always see the same 4 or 5 idiots doing that on TMZ, but it's thankfully not the norm. The issue is whether or not she (or her production team) ripped off the Rubinoos and how accountable she should be held for it.

To #35: Talent has nothing to do with her success; marketing does.

44. Hey Jury of Jerry Colonics: Thank you for your pompous expert opinion. I was absolutely riveted. I have an idea! Since you are on Avril's payroll & have access to the little brat, maybe you can permanently dislocate both of her middle fingers, then maybe she would have to find another way to interact with people.

Posted at 3:05PM on Jul 7th 2007 by I guess when you are 100...everyone seems like a kid.

45. I've heard both and she definintely ripped them off. What a joke!
