The Truth, The Ho Truth and Nothing But the Truth

Thank you Rev. Sharpton. In response to your statement questioning TMZ's use of the term "roboho," first and foremost, please note that we called Beyonce's performance outfit "roboho" not Ms. Knowles herself. There is a difference. One need not know a celebrity personally to have an opinion on their wardrobe. Joan Rivers created an entire industry based on this fact.

As to accusations that our comment was racially motivated, TMZ has humorously called into question many celebs for wearing racy outfits -- regardless of their race. In the past, TMZ referred to Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, as "poshtitute," Hulk Hogan's daughter a "working girl" and called Lindsay Lohan's trashy ensemble a "HO-rror." A tight mini-dress is a tight mini-dress! Even Kid Rock got a humorous "ho" reference in a December 2006 story, and last we checked, he was neither Black nor a woman.

The point of the BET Awards story was to humorously highlight the fashion missteps of celebrity attendees at the show. We were making light of their outfits -- not who they are as people. With everything serious going on in our world, if you can't make fun of something as superficial as awards show clothing, then what can you make fun of? TMZ has done similar fashion stories for the Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, CMTs, etc. If nothing else, the wardrobe critique of the BET Awards proved that TMZ is an equal opportunity offender when it comes to the snarky fashion policing of Hollywood.

We ask you, should the word "ho" be banned? Or only in reference to Black women? Isn't the context in which a word is used almost as important, if not more so, than the actual word? While others may have used the term with maliciousness -- we clearly did not. It was a humor piece -- as all of our fashion roundup stories are.

TMZ appreciates your feedback, Rev. Sharpton, and the dialogue it has opened, but it is clear that the only thing more subjective than what is fashionable, is what one finds funny.

601. This is ridiculous...Are you kidding me? Nothing was racist about it and if he had an issue about this before when it was said to the other women regardless of race then I would have respect for him and understand what he is saying. He is causing racism by making everything a race issue and trying to divide everyone! Well we all know he is a racist and a hypocrite so I'll stop right here.

602. Many responses shows a lack of knowledge about history /culture /racism and sexism in America. It is NOT ABOUT Al Sharpton.

I agree with the above response. Why are men not called "ho" Why is there not verbal equivalent for the males??? Why are the most brutal words used in sexist attacks against women of color ?
It is a rank in status of the particular group (as in some Muslim countries).Verbal assaults are related to physical assaults. A women is assaulted every 16 seconds in the USA. This may be caused by young boys in the US growing up in a society when they see such attitudes being accepted by adults.

603. How about a woman who is not Al Sharpton who did not like the comment either!
TMZ you are walking a thin line! How about if you stop using the term HO all together.
It is offense to any race of women. Just currently it happens to be directed towards black women, so we are outraged at it being done continually. If we allow people to get comfortable with bloops and blunders, then it becomes acceptable. Stop using the word HO towards outfits, actresses (any race), athletes (any race)...STOP IT.
Of course it is free speech, but your choice of words also allows people not to seek out your products or those that support you and I do not need Al Sharpton to tell me where to spend my money. Women need to be treated with respect. If they dont act in a ladylike manner in a less respectful way...then choose another word since you all are so educated...yea right.
How about less classy, loose, whatever, but if you know HO insights people why use it.
If we say anything about how Harvey Levin needs chapstick, you may send the paparazzi to my house.

604. I don't feel that the focus should be on the fact that the woman is black. No woman regardless of race that is not actually a ho, streetwalker, prostitute etc. should be called that based on what they are wearing if that is not what they do. I know we all have some female family members that like to wear slinky dresses, and some revealing outfits that show off their bodies when they go out to party, Think about how you would feel if someone called your mother, sister, girlfriend, aunt or wife these names or better yet asked them how would they feel being called that.

605. You are a web sight so I know that you have computers,so you should do a little research before you make up some of these words. I typed in the word roboho just to see what would come up. A lot of things came up about this situation but did you also know that roboho was a sight for sex games and toys, so are you saying thats where she got her outfit. some people might think that.

606. I think that if you called the outfit that Beyonce was wearing a ho then you are calling her one also. The outfit was on her so I think you called her an ho also. Now I believed that Al Sharpton did take it a little too far with the racial comment. But when making a comment like this we have to be careful. What if Beyonce was your mother or your sister would you like someone to make this type of comment towards her. NO! So just be careful what you say and try to give the celebs a little respect.

607. Maybe the term 'Ho' isn't race/gender specific at all. Whenever I hear or see Sharpton the terms AttentionHo and MediaHo come to my mind.

608. If Azz-Wipe Al actually had a relevant comment that reflected intelligent thinking...I'd fall off the planet!! Has he ever done anything worthwhile?

614. Al Sharpton is always imposing his racist opinion on us. Why do we even give this misguided, one sided, moron the print or media attention? I am sick of the politically correct crowd and they will be the undoing of our great nation! Screw Al Sharpton and others like him! Wah! Wah! Wah!

615. Your comments mostly go over my head and don't bother me at all EXCEPT when they rename people and insinuate they are ho's: like Eva Longhoria and Poshtitute. Neither of these ladies are whores. It's just plain unkind to call names when these are your bread and butter.
